Heartbreaking- Rest In Peace dear Mike.

Postby MarcelJordan » Tue Mar 17, 2015 11:08 am

I'm shaken even though we all know he was suffering and it was a matter of painful time. My fav of Mike in studio recording would be Anna. It's a magical song but more so when the bass so atmospheric so mesmerizing.

I'll like to use some of the lyrics of the song to this:

Mike you gotta stay
It's just a stage you're going through
And Mike this all can change
If we can find a cure, we can start with the band all again

Alas...

The whole thing just sucks. Mike deserved a better final act than this. For me, anytime a public figure is stricken, there is a tendency to hope against hope that they will somehow beat the odds and pull through. I know I did just that with Christopher Reeve and I did it with Mike Porcaro as well. I don't know if ALS runs in the Porcaro bloodline, but the whole thing (from diagnosis to end) left me blindsided. The only silver lining is that the band pulled together as a band of brothers to help one of their own in a time of need. As for favorite Mike bass lines....'Love Has the Power' features both Jeff and Mike on fire! Please, no Byron jokes. I am completely serious. It was the first TOTO album I owned.

No jokes. I was actually re-watching the "Can You Hear What I'm Saying" video. Mike was fantastic on that song!

The more dance-oriented nature of those Past To Present tracks were a great showcase for Jeff and Mike, for sure. Vocals aside, while I'm glad they didn't really keep pursuing the direction afterwards, I think it's cool to hear them try something a bit different for those few tunes.

RIP, Mike. I feel very lucky to have met him twice, and seen him perform a handful of times on the 2005-06 tours.

Is there a video of Mike playing "Can You Hear What I'm Saying" in concert? Would love to watch him playing those lines live.

Listening to Fahrenheit the other day (as I was waiting for Amazon to send a replacement XIV copy). Forgot how prominent Mike's bass was on great songs like Till the End.
