Sample of Bobby's new CD and a title

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Sun Jun 05, 2016 10:35 pm

Kimball's collaborator, John Zaika, (also behind BK's 1999's All I Ever Needed), has posted a clip from Kimball's new solo cd. He has also revealed the tentative title, "We're Not In Kansas Anymore." Kimball has mentioned this cd as being complete or near completed for awhile now. Thoughts - Kimball sounds good. Maybe a little auto-tuned. The style is very much in line with All I Ever Needed with touches of Louisiana swamp jazz and soul and pop. Lyrically, I'm not sure if a guy pushing 70 should talk about his "swagger", but hey, good for Bobby. Anything that enables him to move forward instead of strictly playing TOTO material is a step in the right direction.

I have to agree - it's good - I mean REALLY good. It's not quite Toto - but just about any of these songs, I could see as part of a Toto album. Where the hell is this Bobby live? There are things being done here that can't be "studio enhanced" - so he truly appears to be singing better as he had said earlier in the year. The songwriting and playing is really good on this album as well.

I'm pleased with the purchase - I went in with tempered expectations and came out pleasantly surprise!

Album sounds great, but I have to disagree here. Bobby is pitch corrected on the album, same as he was on FIB. I love Bobby but Luke has said repeatedly that he never sang a full track - top to bottom - in the studio. It was done piecemeal.

Also, in a recent interview he used auto-tune when he sang.

What a weird interview. The fact that the interviewer thinks that Bobby sang "Pamela" and wrote "Hold the Line" doesn't improve things.

I always felt a little for the guy (and Toto's other singers). A huge part of what makes Toto great was the shared lead vocals, and the different sounds that provides. But then you're a "former lead singer of Toto" who didn't sing lead vocals on a lot of Toto songs, it's probably kind of an awkward spot, especially since most people you encounter probably don't realize that. I'm sure members of Chicago have dealt with this too, but it seems to be better managed, for whatever reason.

Longer samples of "Not In Kansas Anymore" (stupid title). Choruses sound strong. Good mix of soul, funk, and ballads.

Oh, there is no doubt he is being pitch-corrected (sorry, didn't really clarify my statement) but as someone who has worked in a studio, I can tell you that there are bits when they are sang quickly or the pitch highly varies, the autotune is SUPER transparent - and I was just saying that there are bits where he really does some nice runs.

Now -- that said -- nothing stopping him from doing 20 takes of that run until it's right. So, yeah...

Agreed. Bobby can still deliver in the studio. For a 70 year old guy, still having that tenor voice is impressive.

Has anyone picked up this release?

http://noted.blogs.com/westcoastmusic/2 ... sions.html

The whole thing is on Spotify too. Looks and sounds like a collection of previously released tracks and re-recordings, including 3 Toto tracks and a hideously uninspired cover version of Level 42's "Something About You". All four of those seem to be taken from this collection: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014J ... s_sp_ps_dp ... which I'd never seen before.

No interest. It's being put out by same label that is putting out his Kansas cd. Maybe it was part of the deal.

Unable to find Kansas at any brick and mortar retail stores. Ordered it online. Looking forward to it. Anyone else?

Pulled this cd out again and gave it a listen. Real solid. I wonder if Bobby made any money on this.
