Andrew writing liner notes for box set

From MR homepage...

G'day folks,
As announced earlier this week on Facebook, I have been commissioned by Toto and Sony Music to write the complete liner notes for the Toto 40th Anniversary Deluxe Box Set, which is coming out later this year.
It has been a honor and a privilege to be involved with Steve Lukather, David Paich and the guys - people I have admired and respected for as long as I can remember.
Work on the liners will continue right up until the end of the month, but first drafts are due to be handed in tomorrow. I hope I will do the band justice.
Luke tells me Sony are backing this set all the way and will be submitting for Grammy considerations. It will be a super deluxe set featuring all new 2017 masters of the entire Sony catalogue. These albums sound even more amazing than ever.
So I should be back to normal next week. I will catch up on the news I've thus far missed and a huge MRX update.
Please stand by for some MRF news and details and plenty of big MRR news. Next week.

Wonder if the set will include XX and Through the Looking Glass? Shame that FIB and XIV weren't on Sony. Wonder what Drew will say about Mindfields? He gave it a C-. Anyway, congrats Drew! Just another reason to buy this.

It will cover XX, but not Looking Glass (which is now technically owned by Universal, I think, although I doubt anyone there is even aware of it). Theoretically Sony could pay to license songs from Universal and Frontiers, but I wouldn't hold my breath there.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the XX songs dispersed as bonus tracks with their corresponding original albums, since it doesn't really hold together well as an album, but that's just what I'd do if I was putting this together.

Hopefully Mindfields will be less compressed than the original version. The mastering isn't as bad as FIB or XIV, but it could still be a lot more natural and dynamic.

I thought Mindfields was compressed and a bit loud when I bought the album when it first came out. But compared to the mastering on FIB or XIV it's a sonic masterpiece! Great songs all around though. Just want great mastering/mixing to go with great songs.

XX yes, Looking Glass no (was EMI)

Mindfields was better than I originally reviewed it - and is their best sounding record probably.

Thanks. Glad you have come around on Minefields. While a little long, I love the diversity.

Will there be any live bonus tracks from the past? Would like early 80’s live versions

Good to hear you are writing the liner notes.
Anyone know if the box set will have the edits or remixes from the singles, etc?

Mindfields is alternately utter brilliance ("Cruel") and total throwaways ("Mysterious Ways"). It'd be twice the album at half the length. But man, the 7 or 8 great songs on it are really, really great.

Even the throwaways are interesting tho I think.

I mean, they're such good musicians that there's at least something to enjoy, but honestly they just didn't have 80 minutes of A-level music written. I think a 45 minute album of all-killer-no-filler is a better album than one that runs 80 minutes just because it could. (There's always the option of putting any leftovers on an XX-type outtakes set down the line)

People keep talking about the 'art of the album' being a dying thing, and I think it's stuff like that during the CD era that contributed. (obviously many artists are far worse about this than this one Toto album...I think every other Toto record is fairly concise and well-sequenced, especially given the critical drubbing they always received for being self-indulgent musician types )

Yikes... http://store.totoofficial.com/music/all-in.html

Hope they consider a CD or even better SACD/DVD/or BluRayAudio-only version of this. I'm sure it's worth the $500 price tag with the LPs - but I have no desire, nor any way to play LPs...
