Pittsburgh Show

The wife saw Def Leppard / Styx / Reo last night in Pittsburgh.

She said "Def Leppard and Reo were good but Styx was horrible."

I pressed her on it because I was wondering what was so bad about the show. She said "Styx didn't seem like they even wanted to be there. They hardly played any songs too, they were on just as long as Reo and usually the second band is on longer. And that keyboardist sounded like he came from 'munchkin land'. He would sound ok at times and other times when he was singing highs it would sound ridiculous."

There you have it.

"Munchkin Land" Brilliant. I still wonder seriously how people can listen to Lawrence sing. Fine, he's a nice guy, but I'd rather listen to someone scratch a chalkboard, then hear him sing Dennis' songs. EGAD!
Not surprised they were acting like they didn't want to be there. It's getting old for them. If you are a current Styx fan, get to any shows you can right now..it's about done.

I'm convinced that in the event of a Nuclear Holocaust, there are 3 things you can count on:

- The Survival of Cockroaches
- The Sun will still rise in the East

and STYX will be playing at a small venue near you !!!!!

Did she say they did anything for GI or talked about it at all, or just played songs from the album like normal?

I'm not sure... I mentioned it was the 30th anniversary and she said "they had t-shirts that say that on it" so I guess they're selling stuff marking the occasion... my guess it's for the whole tour... if not then it's a real collectors item.

and after hearing his new CD (downloaded it for free, no way I would pay for it) all I can say is thank God those songs will not be on a Styx CD. There are a few people here who lead me to think this CD was going to be good. It sounds like Weird Al doing a Styx parody. I tried to like it but it really made me laugh a few times. That CNN song sounds like “Music Time” part 2 and the 2nd song on the CD is a bad “High Time” rip off. Do we really need to hear another song about his wonderful wife?????!!!!??? There are maybe 2 songs that were just okay. It is DDY at his cornball best and that’s not good.

Obviously not the CD I heard.. wow..

I know there's a few songs I don't like a lot on the CD, but I would never have called it "Cornball" and just for the record, I would have not compared Weird Al at all on this album.

This is definatley a more of a classic "Styx" influenced record then a "Solo" record..

If I posted what my husband (who is not a Styx fan) said about the CD, would anyone believe it was not from an unbiased source? Just curious.

I have been listening to the CD for a few days now, and I am still working on a review that won't get me Anthrax mail, but soon, I promise!

Be honest with your review Zan.

As for me I dont see how ANY fan of Styx could rip this CD. It is EXCELLENT!

100 Years From Now - Is a decent rocker. It's not my favorite but it is a very good song. Should DEFINATELY be released over here as a single. With Steve Perryor Tommy Shaw singing the duet part with Dennis he may want to release this first. Otherwise save it for later.

This Time Next Year - Is a VERY GOOD Song - For some reason it reminds me alot of Love At First Sight.

Rain- Is a hard rocker. Its a good song that has yet to really grow on me. It is very good.

Save Me- EXCELLENT Dennis ballad. It is the ballad that you came to expect from Styx since the releas of Cornerstone. To meit is one of his BEST to date. Release this baby third.

Breathe Again- a fair song at best. But it is not bad. I usually skip it though.

Crossing The Rubicon- Dennis's & Styx's best song since................................ I cant remember when. To meit is every bit as good or better than Suite Madame Blue, Come Sail Away, Castle Walls, Queen Of Spades, Born for Adventure. It's a haunting wellthought out, mid tempo rocker. It is an ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE!! Should be released First in US as a single.

Respect Me- Skip button

I Believe In You - Decent ballad. It is NOT near as good as Save Me.

Forgiveness- Skip Button

I Dont Blieve In Anything- Another GREAT GREAT song. This song sounds more like Styx than ANYTHING The Other Styx has ever done. AWESOME song. It would have fit PERFECTLY on Paradise Theatre and been an EASY top 5 hit. This song should be his second release in the US.

Turn Off CNN. Another EXCELLENT song!! Hard rocker should be released 5th in US. Someone ought to send this song to Fox & CNN.

Thats my review. You have 2 CLASSIC songs, One GREAT ballad, 3 other excellent songs, and 1 very good song.

It is a GREAT CD!!

The cornball content is at a minimum on this one. I Don't Believe in Anything is probably the closest thing for me to cornball but the song is great anyways (hey, how often does Dennis swear in his songs?). Actually, if you look at the lyrics on all the songs, there is a lot of darkness, depression and redemption (with better days possible ahead). Much different than Music Time.

Cornball my ass. I am NOT a big lyric guy, BUT this songs lyrics are AWESOME. Everything about this song is INCREDIBLE.

In the recent past I felt that Dennis got preachy with his songs. NOT here. These songs are some of the most relevant well thought out songs I have ever heard. By ANY artist. Bruce or John Melonhead dream of writing this good.

Hanging with Glen may have helped. Who knows. But at any rate Dennis has NEVER written, produced, and sung a better collection of songs. Styx or solo.

As for me there is no way to listen to I Dont Believe In Anything or Crossing The Rubicon and think that ' Damn this is some of the GREATEST work Styx has EVER done'.

How could ANYONE think different???

Cornball - Hell no!!!

lol...I promise I won't rip the CD. But it is far from "excellent," IMO. Too many inconsistancies and bad poetry for me to consider it as such. But it's not terrible either. I really want to give it more listens before I review it in case stuff grows on me, grows off me, or there are elements I've missed.

God, In sincerely hope Glen didn't have anything to do with the lyrics on this album.

I...just...don't know how to answer these questions when they're worded this way, Ypgi. I find the album so far to be fair at best. NOT even in the same universe as stuff Dennis has done with Styx in the past, perhaps in par with Boomchild or Back to World...altho, I still think those were a tad better. It seems very obsious to me that Styx fans are comprised of two or three different groups of taste buds, and you and I clearly aren't part of the same group. I just don't get what you all find so magnificant.

I PROMISE you that it gets better with each listen.

Save Me is an example of that for me. At first I thought it was just fair. Now I LOVE it.

This time Next Year & Turn Of CNN are also VERY good.

The English version of 100 years should be recorded solo. I don't see why it needs to be a duet, but if it is, Dennis should try and get someone from the current generation of rock/pop stars and not people from his era.

Would radio play I Don't Believe in Anything with the word "shit" used in it? Is that something radio stations care about these days?

Rubicon is ok. The bridge (for me) positively SUCKS. Totally out of place - like it was phoned in. For me, it ruins what would have otherwise been a pretty good song. FTR, this is the main problem I have with the CD - too many songs with good parts and bad parts - not too many songs I can get through the whole thing without wishing he had not done this or that.

Turn off CNN has some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard from a DDY-penned song, except maybe"Who Shot Daddy" and "High Crimes." Of course, after Paradise Theatre, Dennis' lyrical abilities have never really impressed me, so we can attribute this to tastes again.

"Rain" is so far my running favorite by a mile.

Well, I....uh...

Ok, having read the hype and reactions to this CD and then having the chance to hear it for myself, I've learned something: what many folks here enjoy about Styx is very different from what I enjoy about Styx. Sounds like an obvious thing to say, but it's a bigger and more fundamental issue than I had really understood. Suddently, I have a much better understanding of what a headache it must have been for A&R types to market this band back in the day.

(Zan put it better with the "taste buds' thing)

I'm not going to do a full review because there's really no point. I will say that I don't hate it; IMO it's far and away the best overall solo record DDY has put out. Of course, that's a pretty steep curve to be grading on, but still.
