CMN - June 6, 1999

I'm watching a tape from the Children's Miracle Network that was aired June 6, 1999. These are just a few observations while I'm watching

The band is Styx, it's members on this stage at this time is Dennis, Tommy, JY, Glen and Todd.

The first song is "Rockin' The Paradise", Dennis is out in front, no keyboards used on this song. Very sad (to me) to see Dennis, JY and Tommy all sharing the microphone at the same time singing together. At this time I had no clue that Dennis was kicked out.

Next song is "Too Much Time On My Hands", Dennis is at keyboards, song starts, Tommy walks over to Dennis, Dennis nods at Tommy, Tommy points and smiles. During this song when they do the "hey, hey, hey", JY looks over at Dennis and they do it together. Funny part, Tommy sings "as long as Marie Osmond is buying". Another sad observation, Glen has been playing way in the back by Todd, can't even see him.

After this song, the audience is clapping and Dennis yells, "boy, these guys are good, get outta here" jokingly.

Now "Lady" is playing, Dennis is at his white piano. (Yes, peeps, the tears are coming down). Fricken' GREAT song!!!!!!!!!! I miss THIS Styx playing it!!!!!!!!!!

JY is introducing the band now. Poor Glen still in back, at least they put the light on him.

Next song "Foolin' Yourself". Tommy plays his guitar to Dennis at the beginning of the song, they smile again.

"Blue Collar Man"

"The Best of Times"

"Renegade" During a little bit in this song, JY is playing the guitar right by Dennis, like old buddies.

"Come Sail Away" - IF ANYONE HAS THIS COPY, PLEASE WATCH DENNIS' EYE CONTACT DURING THIS SONG AS HE'S SINGING THE BEGINNING!!

WOW!! I have no idea how Dennis performed knowing that the music group he co-founded has already kicked him out of the band. The way they interacted on stage and the interview after. They're talking about how it is being back together and great it is. Talking about Brave New World and how the "chicks dig the drummer", interview with Todd. I still don't know how he did it, no clue.

This is from StyxCollector regarding the CMN.

AH: Knowing all that, how difficult was it to play the CMN [Children's Miracle Network] gig back in June?
DDY: Well ... it was not easy, but I had made that commitment before all this stuff happened. And as a man of his word, when I say I'll do something ... I could have backed out of that - easily! It was months between when this happened in March, and June. I could have easily said, "No, I'm not going to do it." But I had given my word not only to the band, but also to the Children's Miracle Network, and it was unfair in any way, shape, or form to back out of that. I mean, it's a great cause and an important thing to do, so I did it.

Dennis was absolutely electric throughout this show. Just amazing. And how sad it was to watch it knowing he was, essentially, out of the group. Their last performance together in that configuration.

Hindsight is 20/20. I think the men all struggled with that performance. 24+ years (Tommy's time) served them well. of course, for me, watching Dennis with that hindsight is difficult, but I also recognize the professionalism involved. Say what you will, when they worked together, they were wonderful.

They faked it well then........which tells me they could do it again, IF there's enough ca$h involved....

Note, I didn't say they will, or they should, or that I even want them to....just that they are good actors, and they COULD....if they so choose.....And that they don't have to like each other to play well together.

I had the tape rolling and was watching it live. I, like many others, didn't realize that Dennis was out at the time. Because the show lasted well into the night, I thought that Styx was not coming back on, so I STOPPED TAPING after they played Babe. Yikes! Would really like to get a full copy if anyone is interested in a trade.

Scott I would love to send you a copy. But the quality that I have isn't the best. I think I have the 10th generation copy - LOL :D

I can't believe how hard it was for me to watch this tape again.

On this same tape, after the CMN performance is a copy of Carrot Styx in 2000 on the Today show along with REO. I watched a little bit of Gowan singing "Come Sail Away". ACK, ACK, ACK!! Just terrible, MY OPINION. I didn't even see any of the "magic" there on the stage either.

Dennis is awesome on stage!!!

Dennis DeYoung rules.

Who cares if he isn't "cool". That's part of his charm.

if anyone has a styx vhs in any incarnation and would like me to bounce it to a dvd for back up, I would be happy to do it for you...OK, I'll keep a copy for myself but I'll return your vhs with a dvd backup.

Come out of the cave more often!! :)

In my spare time (LOL) I'm trying to put together a list of all the videos and DVD's that I have.

I'd love to know what everyone has. I'm looking for the Hawaii footage-Sunshine Festival, People's Choice Awards and now Dennis on Phil Donahue.

And the Holy Grail of all videos - 1972 Milwaukee Lakefront - the whole Styx concert. I only have the grainy version of "Best Thing" on DVD.

I'm hoping to have a DVD burner soon, very soon.

Suite,

Last summer, a half dozen of my friends on another Styx board did a cd sharing thing where we created a rotation and sent cd's throughout the circle. It worked out nice in getting some stuff I didn't have. It's always nice to get new old stuff that you can't put your hands on affordably or stuff you didn't know existed.

With the phrase "Timing is Everything" Just found this on ebay.

Let's not fight over this and jack up the price. It was meant to be shared at an inexpensive reproduction price.

That's my first bid - lewma

It would be nice to do it on this board as trades. Everyone on here is a pretty good group of people overall. I would love to add to my collection. I enjoy listening to the old concerts and listening to the songs that were played during that time. The "In The Studio's" that I have are nice too.

Good luck with your Ebay auction, thanks for the heads up :)

Oh I think he's cool but I get the feeling the general consensus is he isn't as cool as Tommy or JY.

To me I think anyone can stand up on stage and "act" cool but with Dennis what you see is what you get.
