WHY??????

Quick question here.
Why is Dennis banned from using the name Styx as in Former member of... or Ex member of... or any other combination. Why did he let this go instead of fighting it? DDY is Styx more so than JY.-ERIC

Eric. I think he can use "formerly of Styx" legally. And this is the designation on the TV shows he has been on lately.

I think they are feeling, now, that he does not need to use the name Styx anymore in his press releases or concert descriptions. Again, I am guessing this, they feel he has established, quite well, his identity as Dennis DeYoung.

This is just my opinion.

Aye - and I think it's to the point where JY's mouth has done so much to tarnish the image of the band (IE airing their dirty laundry) that he'd prefer not to use it anyway. Plus, they've been using Dennis DeYoung and that name in TV and other places... so it's getting more exposure than DFB.

I think the only tarnish only applies to us hardcore fans who seek out information regarding the band. The casual folks probably don't even notice.

The Other Eric

I think that used to be the case, but with VH1 pointing out that DDY couldn't use Styx because of legal happenings it's becoming much more of a known joke about the sad state of affairs we've known about for 7 years.

I doubt most casual fans even notice that.

I doubt the casual music fan gives a shit about Styx on way orthe other. No, take that back, I KNOW the casual music fan doesn't give a shit about Styx one way or the other. Most don't even know they did anything after Roboto.

Well I disagree with that due to Show Me The Way being affiliated with the first Iraq War and it hitting number 3 on the chart. It's definitely not as well known as Roboto or Don't Let it End tho so I agree there.

I do think "casual people" are seeing Dennis more than Styx with him having spent some time in the pop culture limelight the past year. It may not be much, but it is something that can be built upon.

Show Me The Way was a big hit yes, but Mr. Roboto is definately more popular then SMTW ever was.. Yes they may have both peeked at #3, but Did SMTW get a platinum single? Nope..

Has SMTW been in commercials or those "Biggest Hits of 1980's (or 90's for that matter) compilations? If it is, I haven't seen them.

Has SMTW been firmly entrenched in movies, tv or any other form of media? Name one movie or TV show from 91 on that SMTW has appeared in. Think of any?

Hell, Babe was #1 but is it as big as Roboto? Don't think so..

Face it.. Mr Roboto is still a commercial success for Mr. Deyoung & DFB (even though they may not like to play it live, they realize it's importance) going on 24 years now..

Shudder.. Mr. Roboto will be 25 in 08.. That's just umm SCARY!

I mis-typed. I meant to say it was NOT as well known as roboto - but still relevant in it's own right. Sorry for the confusion. I've edited my text to fix the typo. Sorry.

I'm writing about the majority of people I see at a concert. Most of them see the concert advertised and go buy tickets. They don't get on message boards or pay much attention to the fleeting exposure Styx or DDY get on TV. Most of them never attempt to get on a Styx message board. Several probably visit Styxworld.com but you don't get any gossip or dirt there.

I'll make a prediction right now: Niether Styx or DDY in their current forms will ever again experience any type of major commercial success selling recordings in the United States. The time for relevance has passed. Both will get minor media buzz because they are minor pop culture figures. Both will be on TV once in a while when the talking heads want us to revisit the nastalgia.

There are two ways the members of Styx or DDY will ever experience major success:

1. They reform with DDY, put the past behind them, lock themselves in a studio TOGETHER, and cut a GREAT album. Keep in mind when I write GREAT it doesn't mean BNW (because BNW sucked). Great means another Grand Illusion or Pieces of Eight. (This scenerio probably will never happen)

2. If the members of Styx, particularly Tommy Shaw, engage in a side project that got lucky. Tommy would have the best shot at this if for instance Damn Yankees reformed and made a decent album. Dennis could probably do it too if he found someone to collaborate with who is relevant today ala Santana and Rob Thomas. Todd is good enough and young enough that he could probably catch on with a current or up-and-coming group and ride that train.

All I know is that EVERYONE I tell I'm a Styx fan says the exact same thing: They're still around????

Everyone. Not just a few. So, we can argue sematics 'til the cows come home, but the reality is, most people have no idea Styx is stilll in existance.

Show Me the Way was a hit, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a casual music fan who knows who actually performed it.

I hate to get you all off the discussion at hand, but is there somewhere on the net to get the SMTW Iraq remix. I cannot remember ever hearing the thing, and would like to.

Thanks

You've got that right. Many people are aware that the STYX is still around. They are still setting attendance records at county fairs and festivals. They can still put 2000 butts in seats in theaters.

These guys have been touring non-stop for the last seven years with no sign of slowing down. There is no doubt that they put on an entertaining show. Otherwise people wouldn't keep paying good money to see them.

But beyond knowing the hits, most people don't have a clue what is going on with STYX.
