You know, no one forced JY to play on all those "cringe-inducing" songs from 1979 onwards. I didn't see him complaining in 1981 when Paradise Theatre went 4x platinum. If he weren't such a hateful hypocrite, he would have quit and formed the James Young Experience. That he didn't do so is probably good for the world of music, however!

Actually, he indicates that Dennis and Tommy took the intro and modified it and then turned it into a whole song with Tommy writing the lyrics. I don't think he took great pains to tell us that he can't stand the 1979 music onwords. He said he had a problem with Babe and Roboto and thought it alienated fans (but recognized Babe hit number 1 by bringing in some new ones).

That said, his Dennis bashing was in fine form. He spent quite a bit of time honing those Dennis is all evil skills. I prefer when JY gives interviews that are more positive.

Nothing new. Jy being, as usual, as he looks. Here we go again, JY commenting AGAIN about what he didn't get credit for and how unhappy he was with stuff after a certain point. At least he is consistant. Dear God. He must be so miserable. At least he has his mommy.
His whole story is shit considering the fact that he joined Dennis again for EOTC. That alone right there blows chunks on everything he tries to say and everyone he blaims.
Must be pretty shitty to be so broke that you had to once again do something, with someone, you hated so much.

Maybe, just maybe it seemed to some people that perhaps JY had FINALLY taking the high road. If you can listen to that interview and divine that, you are out of your mind. In the end, nothing with JY has changed. People are merely venting.

I was hoping to get more about himself and less about everyone else. But other than at the beginning where Cara asked him about his engineering degree, that was it.

I wonder what JY and Tommy think of Dennis' new album? Or if they even heard it yet. I'm sure it still isn't heavy enough for JY's taste, but I bet he would still be kind of impressed with it. I mean I love Dennis, and even I wasn't expecting this strong of a record. Probably the only way to get JY's honest opinion of it would be to talk to him off the record.

He HAS to think it's better than 10 on Broadway!!

I can certainly understand JY's frustration with Dennis over the years - especially around the time of "Boomchild" - Tommy and JY were primed for a reunion and Dennis instead wanted to pursue what would ultimately be his least successful (commercially absolutely, artistically simply IMHO - although "Harry's Hands" would have made a great Styx song) solo album.

At the same time, JY's post-lawsuit venting against Dennis has only served to damage his credibility. It has NOTHING to do with minimizing his contributions - it has to do with his, at times, laughable attempts to DISCREDIT Dennis' contributions. The issue on this topic, IMHO, isn't the DeYoungians - it's the fans of "New Styx" who continuously try to apologize for JY's buffoonery in this regard.

Now, Styx is arguably at a low-point commercially. Their popularity has arguably regressed signficantly since their BNW tour and JY, who is a very smart man, knows that as well as anyone. It's been reduced, IMHO, to a fairly cynical cash cow for the principals involved with the caveat that they still have their chops. I can understand why they jettisoned Dennis - I just can't agree with their hyper-dillution of the Styx "brand" in the name of a few extra $$.

So, things aren't going very well - and now Dennis has a new CD coming out. If one thinks that this ISN'T on JY's mind, they may be out of their's. Dennis is, considering his age and the fact that he's not in Styx, remarkably popular in Canada and is the "go to" person for main stream pop culture outlets (Celebrity Duets, Canadian Idol, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Perfect Man) when they want to get a "piece of Styx." For the "non-fan," Dennis' voice is STILL what people think of when they think of "Styx" and his songs, outside of Renegade and Blue Collar Man (and perhaps Too Much Time on My Hands), are what people think of when they think of Styx. JY doesn't like this - so, if he has a chance to vent after 8 years, he's going to do it.

The FUNNY thing is, many very well intentioned fans on all sides of the "argument" want this to be water under the bridge. JY, however, won't let it die.

Tommy, in the meantime, is SO gratified by the Styx experience that he's gone off and made a simple little album of cover tunes with his good friend Jack Blades.

It's very sad IMHO. From 1977-1984, this band was a monster and deserves more credit (i.e. Rock and Roll HOF, star on the Hollywood WOF), than it has gotten/is getting.

JY feels the need to *still* bash because after 9 years he realizes it's a losing battle and he's frustrated that they've still not been able to establish themselves out from under the shadow of Dennis DeYoung.

9 years of this line-up and they *still* ask or mention the break-up in every single interview.

I'm actually surprised he hasn't told people to stop asking about it.... but it's apparent he likes those slow curves where he can tee off on Dennis.

And don't doubt for a second that JY will play with Dennis again someday... money talks.

Look, TS has toned down the rhetoric. DDY has. JY is less bashy than he used to be, but he's still getting his barbs in here and there. Big deal. The only people stewing about it are on this board. Does it really matter anymore? And why do people still care that much what comes out of any of their mouths? Just saying ...

The only thing I find funny is he wouldn't do an ID for my site when he did the interview in 2003 but did here.

Probably because your site is devoted to Styx. He knows he already has you and your visitors as fans. In his mind Cara's Basement reaches non Styx fand and helps broaden the fan base. Notice how many times JY asked her for coffee, probably thinking that it will give him a new connection, etc...

I was kidding, but it's true that he wouldn't. I cut that part out when I put up the interview. JY wasn't too friendly about it. I knew not to ask twice.

Remember, even 4 years ago JY was not embracing the 'net as a real way to promote. He's come a long way (in a good way that is).
