SAme could be said for vilifying DDY, too. There's a big middle ground, and that's where the truth really is. Everyone in this scenario is guilty to some degree.

Certainly he bolted 83-84 but being in a situation where you are extremely unhappy but yet still feel an obligation to the fans and the band to finish things created huge problems for him. He dealt with it in the wrong way but still...tough situation to be in when you have a ton of money and the freedom to be self-destructive. I think Dennis helped create an atmosphere that allowed for bad things to happen..not purposely but by his driving ego that had him drag the rest of those guys through Kilroy when not everyone else was onboard with it. I think they all, especially Dennis and Tommy, admit to making mistakes back then.
Well, if I remember correctly, TS quit at the Largo, MD, show during the show (see smashed guitar) and his manager told him to get his ass back and finish his commitment. I don't think it was any obligation to the fans. Granted, I'm sure it was chemical fueled along with the unhappiness of the situation. But the thing is - and if you talk about accepting responsibility which as you say everyone has admitted to making mistakes - if DDY had created a toxic atmosphere, why did CP, JP, JY, and TS put up with it? In the BTM Tommy admits straight up that DDY was a changed person after he came back, and if he was being a tyrant (and again, none of us were there so I'm not even saying or speculating), why did they do the tour for Cornerstone, PT album and tour, and the KWH album and tour if it was *so* bad? If you're that miserable, no amount of money should keep you there.
I'm just saying ... it seems like whatever DDY was like and however bad it was, they sucked it up and made a lot of money for about 5 years. Yes, it fueled TS into a bad place. Yes, it created a lot of tension in the band. But everyone let it happen. Management, band members, etc. No one gets a free pass here. When a situation is that toxic, the only way it can end up is bad. Chuck's "one finger in the air" quote from the BTM is classic, but I think sums it up. These guys went from almost nothing with a minor hit in 1975 to the top and spent the better part of their lives for 10 - 15 years (10ish if you include when TS joined) in and out of studios and live shows. Very few bands survive that fishbowl unless everyone has a lot of space.

Bingo. And the HOF won't be nominating bands like Styx, so we need not worry.
