True, on the diet sodas, ya always feel like ya want something sweet after drinking one. I don't find that with the Diet Rite cola though, must be the splenda, it's a derivitive of sugar.......but no calories.

Never acquired a taste for beer, ya I know......hard to believe coming from a country with some of the best beer. )........always thought it tasted like runny bread dough. I like vodka based drinks though.

now if I can just find a way to get off of chocolate chip cookies... holy crap, I hate food.

brywool wrote:But it tastes the best! Pepsi and Coke- ever notice there's like a weird moldy taste to some of it? You notice it more with the diet. Yeah, can't do coffee. And what Saint John says is true. Diet Pop DOES slow metabolism, f's up your brain function (thank you nutrasweet) and makes you put more weight on. I drink water too, but I can only handle so much before I need something that has a taste to it. Beer- never could stand it. Probably just as well.

Not necessarily. What slows your metabolism down more than anything else is not eating properly. In regards to the brain function, well, I'm an I.T. specialist (with a minor, believe it or not in nutrition) and my brain appears to be functioning about as good as anyone else's. Maybe were all screwed up and don't know it?

As someone who has studied health and wellness, I can definitely tell you that too much of anything is not good, including diet drinks. However, in regards to diet drinks verses regular soft drinks, diet drinks are more healthier. With that said, it isn't good to have a steady diet of either one, but as someone who drinks at least two cans of diet drinks (Diet Mt. Dew, and either Diet Coke or Dr. Pepper) a day, I can definitely say it has not effected my metabolism one bit. In fact, since January, I have changed my diet and have lost over 25 pounds. Still drinking diet drinks, and haven't exercised THAT much. So, I'm not sure I can necessarily agree on the theory of diet drinks slowing your metabolism down.

For a brainiac you sure don't know sick when you drink it. Diet Coke is meh-okay. But Diet Mt. Dew is horrible, and Diet Dr. Pepper is the most disgusting thing on the whole planet. (Pop wise.) But then again, if I'm gonna have pop, I go regular... Pepsi, Coke, Mt. Dew, Dr. Pepper, M-Fin' CHEERWINE (I cart cases of it to IL with me :D ).

PS... Saturday = Fail. Gonna be a long year.

I drank a diet dew (20. oz bottle) a day. When I'd skip, I'd get really bad headaches (to the point of throwing up). Horrible. I never want to deal with that again. I'll never get addicted to pop again.

LOL! I used to be a Mt. Dew addict! About 10 years ago, I'd drink at least three of those 24 OZ bottles a day! I finally weened myself off of all soft drinks for about six months, but that didn't last. I used to think Diet Mt. Dew was the grossest thing on the planet too, but after being away from regular drinks for about 10 years now (if I have a regular drink it's not very often if at all) it tastes much better to me now. I do occasionally have a Coke Zero or a Pepsi one (or whatever it's called) every now and then, but the splenda still has a certain amount of sugar in it (since it is made from sugar,) so I don't do those very often!

Speaking of the Hokies, did you hear that Beamer is taking the red shirt off of Taylor and going back to the two quarterback system? We might be alright after all. But, Glennon sucks big time!

I hear ya! It's the caffeine withdrawal. Mt. Dew contains the highest amount of it amongst all the soft drinks (excluding those energy drinks like Jolt.) As matter of fact, I didn't have any this morning and started developing a bad headache. Same thing would happen if one is drinking coffee on a regular basis.

No, I didn't!!!! My Dad usually updates me on the news out of Bburg, but I've been too wounded to talk about it this week.
Reaction: PRAISE JEEBUS! Tyrod is awesome, but we've still got a long year regardless. Just maybe without Glennon at the helm we might stand a chance at dignity. My friend almost ran over Glennon on the drillfield one day, he didn't look before he crossed out into traffic. Sigh, if only...

"There's something about diet foods that changes your metabolic limit, your brain chemistry," said ABC News' medical contributor Dr. Marie Savard.

Though Savard said more research needs to be done to uncover more information, the study does hint at the idea that the sweeteners alter a person's metabolism.

Savard said another recent study, which included more than 18,000 people, found healthy adults who consumed at least one diet drink a day could increase their chance for weight gain."

"Here’s some more grim news on the diet soda front. Circulation published a study that found that drinking diet soda (specifically) raised your chances of getting the horrible threesome of diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol (called the metabolic syndrome) by 34% among people who drank one diet soda a day–even when everything else (including diabetes) was taken into account. Eeks. Diet soda was a greater metabolic syndrome risk than the risk associated with eating red meat OR fried foods!"

Those that know me personally, and I'll admit, there are not many here that do...know that I've lost a *ton* of weight over the past 2-3 years.

Of the many lifestyle changes I made to lose said weight, one is applicable here.

I stopped drinking soda (diet or non-diet), slurpees, juices, excess coffee, etc.

and replaced all of it with ice-cold water. I will drink alcohol one night a week, if I feel like getting a little stupid....but the rest of the week, I drink *nothing* but water.

While I can't attribute my weight loss and increased health awareness to just replacing drinks with water....it's had a large part. People in this country don't stay hydrated enough....and they assume, incorrectly, that drinking coffee, tea, soda, juice, has the same effect...and it doesnt.

I'll submit that anyone here that normally drinks nothing but diet soda....if you change nothing else in your lifestyle....but stop drinking diet soda for 2-3 weeks and replace it with 2 times as much cold water (bottled or tap, doesn't matter)...you will lose 10-20 pounds....

SJ, I think what you said about Diet Soda isn't necessarily a primary cause. People get diabetes, high cholesteral and high blood pressure because they are overweight. no other reason. Type II diabetes is not a cause of weight gain, it's the other way around.

the point that should be made with that quote, is that replacing diet soda/foods with healthy foods, results in weight loss and increased health awareness. The increased weight loss and health level results in less incidents of TII diabetes, high BP, high cholesteral, etc....

I think what you quoted, can be misinterpreted, in that people soda/diet foods is a primary cause of said things...and I feel, while it's extremely important, its a secondary thing...

I drink a TON of soda, both diet and regular. I would guess that I probably drink at least a six-pack every day. It's very hard to go without, I must admit.

Dave, let me also add to what I said above, losing weight if you switch to water is assuming you have weight to lose in the first place.

I agree with you that dumping soda in favor of regular, bland, boring water is *very* hard. It took at least two months of me *craving* water and feeling completely deprived...before I started to feel like I could live without soda. In the interim, however, I had lost about 30 pounds....granted with also cutting out excess calories, etc.

However, it's something that is very doable....it just takes a little dedication.

Also, one thing to consider is that if you don't drink enough water.....you're at risk for kidney stones (assuming you have a pre-disposition for it). A friend of mine used to drink a case of Mountain Dew every 2 days. Until he had a 1 week bought with kidney stones that landed him in the hospital with IV pain medication.

You're constantly dehydrated then, Dave. And considering that that shit gives you huge hunger spikes your appetite probably rivals that of Amy Whinehouse in a fucking pharmacy. But seriously, that's way too much shit to putting into your body daily.

Which is why those low calorie drinks like Propel and a few others are so cool. Vitamin water is also very good with hardly any calories.

I know someone who does that too. It made sick just to watch, to the point where the thought of drinking Mt. Dew ooged me out for awhile for no other reason than watching him do it to that extreme was just puke inducing.

I've been drinking strickly diet soda for as long as I recall for two reasons... 1, I LOVE pop, and 2, for the amount of pop I drink, if I drank regular, it's just too much of a sugar intake. I come from two diabetic parents so I know I have to watch out.

Diet pop hasn't messed me up yet. :(

I'm thinking reeling back on the venti coffees couldn't hurt either one of us either. Just that one night we downed the two ventis, and I noticed the caffeine had NO effect on me, I thought it might be time to chill on that. Then I drove home that night and popped a 5-Hour Energy shot and a giant Red Bull before I even got to Cincy. My circulatory system is going to implode if I (and you) keep doing that. Caffeine's a hell of a drug.

My family doesn't have a history of them, but I did just have my first one last December. I was in enough pain that they had to put me in a wheelchair to take me into the hospital. I was too weak to stand without feeling like I was going to fall over. Dark sodas are a bigger problem than other kinds, though. Unfortunately, the ones I like the most are the dark ones.

Are you fucked? Steve Perry will sing the National Anthem naked on the pitcher's mound at a prime time nationally televised Cubs game before I'm giving up my venti coffees.

And caffeine hasn't had any effect on me since about 1987 anyway.
