Why even bother responding to the original post after this response. It's dead on, in all repects:

"I don't agree with this at all. Life is a journey of evolution, and while many people speculate that Perry must be some tortured soul who simply can't do it any longer (which may be true), it's also entirely possible that Perry is content with his life and the legacy he has left. Just like Larry Bird and Michael Jordan couldn't play forever, neither can all musicians. That doesn't take away from their vast body of work.

I'm not discounting the fact that Perry may well be a perfectionist (and most accept this as fact) who can't accept the fact that he can't sing like he used to. I'm simply presenting the other side of the equation that Perry may be happy with not singing any longer. I also don't think Journey's "success", as some people call it, bothers Perry one iota. The name Journey and Steve Perry will forever be intertwined. There aren't 27 people in the country who know who Journey is without Perry. The guys on the road as Journey today aren't making a living, without Perry. Those facts alone tell me that his legacy is firmly cemented, for all of time."

No thanks, as much as I love Perry I wouldn't want to see him in some of those pants at 60!  But then again I'm probably in the minority on not wanting the high vocals back either, much prefer the huskier later vocals. :)

I Think, SP was/is a great singer, however, his possible comeback is similar to the little boy who cried wolf and we all know what happened to that little boy. One can only be faithful so long before, the heart goes under; It's like sitting on a busstop bench, waiting for a bus that you know deep in your heart will never come but you continue to sit waiting jumping at every little sound, telling yourself " the bus is coming for sure this time" hours pass and you're still sitting, rain come and you're still sitting, cause you got faith that, that bus is gonna come; nighttime comes you're still sitting so now what do you do? Well you got two options, 1. Keep sitting waiting on the bus or 2. get your butt up and go home before someone mug you while you're sitting on a busstop bench in the dark.   Come back the next day and sit some more; Hell that bus may come after all you never know....... and on and on the wait goes on and on.

I'll preface this by saying that I don't really care for the Arnel led Journey, I didn't ever listen to Soto with Journey, and I am still a big fan of the Perry and Augeri led Journey:

There is a lot of revisionist history that gets floated around when it comes to this band. Depending on who's posting, it's slanted one way or the other usually.

The fact is that Journey just sold 500k copies of an album, which is technically Platinum. There were people here YEARS ago that said there was absolutely no way Journey would ever have a gold record without Perry. Well, they just did.

The music industry has changed so much that Journey has almost no shot of ever getting close to what they used to be. Hell, Arrival was #56 on the charts in 2001 with around 52,000 copies sold. That same number of sales would have placed it at #10 this week.

The comparison between success with "Perry" Journey and "Augeri/Soto/Pineda" Journey just doesn't work.

Yes

Now, had they sold the new album, without a greatest hits and a DVD of greatest hits, how well would it have sold?

I'm thrilled as can be that a new Journey album did that well, but there is also some revisionist history regarding their recent success too!

The new album also came with two others discs of material filled back to back with Perry era music for a cheap price. Take away the Perry era music, and what are the numbers?

Ditto for the tour. Glad Journey played to big numbers, but they didn't do it on their own. Heart and Cheap Trick were there too. Take away Heart and Cheap Trick and what would the numbers have been like for just Journey?

Good points, but they're damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they don't give you enough they're "cheap" and when they give you too much they're "riding Perry's coattails." I thought the package was fantastic for the price...and I don't give a shit what eras the package included. It's all Journey stuff and falls under the umbrella of their corporation. Same goes for the tour. I was at 8 shows and I know who the the vast majority of people were there to see. And man, what a great 3 band package it was. I think Azoff really got it right for a change. The album, tour and promotion were all excellent and the feedback was incredible in terms of sales and dollars. Everyone got what they wanted. That said, it's gonna be tough to top that tour. Though I still say Journey, Foreigner and Triumph would be the way to do it. :D

Shaw and Blades would draw no one and Sammy has turned his concerts into a Jimmy Buffett-like goof fest. That concert would pale in comparison to what Cheap Trick, Heart and Journey put out.

IMO Journey with Arnel selling 500,000 copies is still quite an achievement. It does not matter if it was bundled with a pair of Steve Perry's underpants. The numbers are damn good. Even if it has Perry re-treads, 500,000 people have a new Journey cd to listen to and evaluate. The Walmart music buying community is a strong demographic, and they wanted to hear Arnel sing the Perry material.
This speaks to Perry's undying appeal with people. He fell of the planet before FTLOSM and still came back with a gold record.

If Perry decides to comeback, my guess is that he will be a niche singer for sure, and not necessarily a pop rock performer. By niche I mean that he will be singing classic adult contemporary sounding songs or standards. Can anyone confirm that his new stuff will be uptempo rock. Slow breathy ballads are his thing. I would be very surprised IF his new stuff sounds anything like what we'd expect...and that varies among all of us.

IF, IF, IF.....

If my aunt had balls she'd be my uncle.

I will buy the new Perry cd the first day. Maybe if he put up a site to allow people to pre-order he might be persueded to release something.

Just from talking with the few fans I know (outside of this board), they definitely bought Revelation to hear how Arnel sings the old hits. And, judging by all the reviews to the concerts -- from critics and fans alike -- SP and those songs he co-created and sang in still played a big part in everyone's minds.

I don't believe Rev could have sold 500K without the old-hits package.
