Who is the "one" Perry soundalike that you're referring to, Jeff??? I'm still waiting to hear someone who sounds like Perry. I heard many claim Augeri sounded like Perry, which I thought was ABSURD! Augeri was NOWHERE close to Perry, on ANY level and sounded absolutely NOTHING like the guy!

John from Boston

I just meant guys that launched & were compared to Perry like Hugo, David Glen Eisley (Giuffria), even Jimi Jamison got it back then. I didn't mean any one intentionally tried to be Perry but the ones that had the clean tenor would automatically be compared to him as 'Perry-esque'.

I'm not implying anything here but on a side note there was an old Interview a threads back where Perry said that the guy from Survivor was getting a grammy for basically copying Perry's vocal style, a style that the critics were lambasting him for at that time but giving props to new acts who were singing in the the same style. I don't think Perry was too upset with the guy from Survivor, just pointing out the double standard being used against him a that time.

I just took it as a statement of fact
there is only one Steve Perry & the rest are by definition sound alikes

Wouldn't it be something if someday JSS & Steve Perry collaborated...not to tour but for a song or even a CD?
Bet that would knock a chip off Neal's shoulder.

That would be way cool! Soul overload for this fan. And ya never know in this funny world of R&R anything's possible........never thought I'd ever be just a few feet away from seeing JSS and EM share a mic either. :D

Just a thought
I think the combination would be brilliant
but I want to retract it for my reasoning behind it was skewed
I voiced it more as an awakening for Neal
about how this world goes round & comes around.

Still if JSS & Steve Perry had some thoughts they wanted to put together in song
I'd be more than happy to listen.

Jeff's performance of "I'll Be Alright Without You" is SUPERB! It's definitely THE SONG in the Journey catalogue that is absolutely perfect for his voice! His version of that song is as good as any I've heard!

Hi all,

Since i don't post too much on here can i ask what dealings with the music business people here have beyond fan-status?
Notably people like 'St John' and 'Tito' who are making some pretty bold statements..

I know the internet seems to be the avenue where people 'vent their spleens' and the term 'keyboard warriors' seems no more relevant than on this thread but please guys have a little respect for those who were directly involved in the things you so venomously debate..

Opinion is great but from a casual observer there seems to be a good few who have more insider knowledge than those who lived it.....

Back to the original post, JSS seems to have been very clear on his tenure with Journey and how he left transpired. Now i dont know if Neal Schon has been misquoted or what but there seems to be a whole lot of variation going on between his own stories.

As competent as it is nothing touches Perry's extended version from the FTLOSM tour.

I'll give you that.. I do prefer Perry's version but to be honest songs like "I'll be Alright Without You" ARE Steve Perry... JSS's version is still fine fettle... And sticking my neck out Journey look more a band as a single unit with him than with AP..

I have to agree partially with a review on another thread that AP does look more like the Super-Fan who has won the musical lottery...
Awesome voice tho.

They've been out there promoting themselves for a long time as a good show to attend.

with respect to the tour stops in my area, the gens tour was an embarassment. Shitty venues, low attendance, etc.

I did the 5 star thing on the Generation tour and the turn out was phenomenal - but...I live in the Bay Area and Journey is always well received here. The one thing we have here are decent venues - lots of 'em in driving distance! : )

You're probably right. But I'd still stand up and shout if needed , no pun intended ;)

What do you (some people here in general...not specifically you, Deb) get out of making him into a superstar and using him in the same breath as Perry, Gramm, Mercury and others when he clearly hasn't earned the right to be in that company? I think we're much closer to the truth than those people and sometimes the truth hurts...but it's still the truth. There was never a problem here until people felt the need to make ridiculous comparisons that were actually unfair to Soto himself. If you played "word association" with music insiders and experts and said Perry, Gramm and Mercury I would bet my entire net worth that "Soto" would not be the next name mentioned...or the 50th for that matter.

Perhaps it is because some of us actually feel in our hearts that Jeff DOES belong in that category. Personally, I would and do. I hear something in his voice that does the same thing to me that Steve and Freddie's did (no cracks, please :P ).

But that's ME. It's the reason I'll hop a plane with virtually no sleep for 36 hours so I can catch two concerts in two days. It's the reason I have everything the man has done with the exception of two Yngwie discs.

It's because I respect someone who works so hard for so long doing what he so obviously loves to do when others would have given it up when the "superstar" status didn't arrive overnight.

What I'm trying to say is it's a personal thing. Because of his tenure in Journey, I (a) realized who was behind the name I had been reading about all those years on MR and (b) discovered a talented singer who ranks right up there in MY echelon of great singers.

It can't be argued for or against, pro or con, right or wrong. It just is.

But isn't that why we are attracted to the music we love? :)

That's an interesting question. Did everyone travel around to see Journey because of their looks?

No denying the good looks, but seriously.

Jeff's talent and music are worth the trip!

Alas, I have only seen REO/Kevin once in San Jose with Journey and Styx. Last year my son got married the day they performed across the Bay (who raised that kid!).

But, no, I do not fly all over the country to see him. I flew a third of the way around the world to meet Steve Perry, though, and flew to Portland to catch him there.

I flew this year to LA for Jeff, and had I known how fun it would have been I would have been in Tarzana last year AND South Bend, too!

The older I get, the more discretionary income I can divert to following folks around! :D

I guess Kevin is next on the agenda!
