Generations: Your # 1 track and why

Postby Red13JoePa » Fri Jul 15, 2005 3:40 am

For me it was and still is The Place In Your Heart. 2 main reasons: Augeri's vox. When i compare this song to the way he sounds on another great track Higher Place the differnece is kind of startling. It's clearer, richer, stronger, louder (not as faint) seemingly more confident. it went from being a competent, professional job on HP to being a jawdropping real highlight of the song for me on TPIYH.
Schon's guitars, particularly the short, middle, and ending solos are vintage. And the lead he plays throughout the whole song is relentless.
Cain's keys are sbutle but there.
Deen is physically beating the shit out the drums and the gang bg vox are cool. Deen's ghost harmony from Higher Place is there again.

Another, more constructive way of saying this could be, "Deen is wholeheartedly striking the drums in such a way to be heard from great vast distances away."

Red13, I honestly believe you can fit in here if you perhaps exude a little effort. This is the second time I have corrected your foul abusive use of certain verbage. Please, by my heartfelt request, work on this. Thanks.

OK, Reardon.

For your sensitive eyes, will I endeavor to obey your cease and decist plea on pottykeyboard. How's the Herald treating you?

Give RockNDeano his computer back now please, but first tell us your # track.

Reardon has done nothing wrong, nothing illegal, and I don't think we should discuss his matters why there is an ongoing speculation as to who he is. Let's agree to let the truth come out in the wash, okay?
I will gladly to take questions and talk about it after the speculation has run it's course.

Thank You.

Mine is also TPIYH. Just b/c it is classic Journey. Grabs you on the first listen. I like the urgency of it.

My current #2 is Out of Harm's Way. I love the chorus when Augeri sings "Harm's WAAAAAAAAAAAY" with Neal's guitar in the bg. Love it.

So true NIG, on that part where Augie weaves Way and other lyrics over Neal's ending solo. that's one of things I love most about what steve does. Does it on the "forget what was" part of the end of HP over Neal too.
great post.

I also love right at the 4:00 mark of Knowing that You Love Me, when Augeri hits that high note and the band comes in with "YOU LIFT ME UP". sounds great.

That note and tons, I mean TONS of speaker shaking other high notes all over the album. I loved him before, don;t get me wrong guys but he just has so much strenght and range on Gens.... maybe it was Fraser who unlocked what was untapped in his voice but whatever it was....keep it.
Plus his low songs are cool too where he sounds nothing like SP.

Reardon, I liked how you put the "u" in favorites as though you pulled a Madonna and went Brit. But then again IS the new Deano.

That is a great moment. Their harmonies are really good.

1) Faith in Heartland
2)TPIYH
3)Better Life Neal's guitar is soothing
4)Harms Way
5)Beyond the Clouds

That is the part that gives me chills! That may be a falsetto note, but I love it!

I also love the changeup at the end of TPIYH. There are several "moments" on this CD among all the great songs!

Yeah, the guitar in A Better Life is so different than any other Journey song. I love it.

I still say, the weakest song on the CD to me is Better Together. Just bores me.

I am trying to learn A Better Life on guitar, but dont have the ear nor the pickups Neal has...

I still think it sounds like Richard Marx's "Hazard" at the beginning.

Beyond the Clouds is starting to grow on me.

The lead in ABL recalls that in Forever In Blue a little...check it.

Schon has said he's not above revisting and tweaking one of his great lines. Look at all the different versions of the WCN ending riff he's worked up. Signs Of Life... and another on TBF (shit) can't remember which one.
If He SHould Break Yoyr heart, i think.

OK, back to the music...

Butterfly is also growing on me. I don't know which ballad I prefer - Butterfly or Knowing that You Love Me. Kind of a toss up right now, both are really good. I think even the Perry girls would like them if they gave them a chance.

I love that also, can't decide if FITH is my favorite or Better Life. Although Better Life is one of those songs that for whatever reason, just reached inside me and grabbed my soul. That doesn't happen that often, but when it does, its amazing.

Right now my top 5 are:

1. Better Life
2. FITH
3. Out Of Harms Way
4. Better Together
5. Believe

What, Cubby?
No The Place In Your Heart ANYWHERE in your top 5? Whatdadillio on dat?

NealIsGod, Butterfly is one of those slowgrowers. But Knowing That You Love Me as a good a ballad as they've thrown out there since ...I don't know cuz I hate ballads. It's up there with I'm Not That Way to me.

Sorry, don't like that one much, although I will admit, it is growing on me. To reminscent of the so called 'classic Journey sound' which is my least favorite era of the band. Besides in the beginning it is way to familiar to Ask The Lonely. Its get better at the end, but definitely not one I like to much.

It IS the most Identifieable Jrny song on it. SOme people dig that though like NIG pointed out. To each his own becaue you obviosly have a bunch of tracks tour digging so that's good.
