Calling Loons and Heads for perry expertise.

Was perusing the solo albums this week and got wondering about the shelved Against The Wall perry solo record from '88.

If anyone can help, what is the lineup for those tracks? I'm thinking Landau played guitar on at least most as he has some cowrites.

Near as I can tell, we now have 10 tracks spread across 2 albums now including the original 7 that ran on GH when it was still called GH+5 and now 3 more on FTLOSM including an improvement over the demo on GH finished beefed up If You Need Me Call Me and the fantastic tracks Can't Stop and Friends Of Mine (like these 2 a LOT) making 10. Is that all there are or are there more out there?
To me Perry seems to hint in the FTLOSM liner notes that we have the full album now spread out across his solo work and he sarcastically retitles it Better Late Than Never.

OhSherrie, Deb, Shania, Matto, PF, Linus, Nora, HOTS (whoops, not anymore ), DonnaPlease, Canseco, Enigma, StevieF, Suzer (Whoops, see "HOTS" )I know you're all out there and can help me.

I've wondered this too. Curious if Sony'll ever let him release it on its own.

Who knows but I think he figures it's out there now, even if posthumously in a defacto way.

you have most of it though.. i can see why the record label was scared of it.. its not what anyone would have suspected.. GREAT musicians,, but pretty low in the mix..

Here's another "What If".

1988, Perry releases ATW and its a big hit. Would he have toured solo or would've been the impetus to get back with the boys and crank out another Journey record? That's what happened right after FTLOSM if only for the recording of TBF.

ATW was the critical turning point in both his and Journey's futures.

What if in 1988 the rest of Journey, who he told one year earlier that he was "toast and just didn't want to do it anymore" got wind of the fact that he had ripped off at least 10 more brand new tracks without them?

Against The Wall was recorded with session musicians.Some of them were Steve's friends,some others were found in the LA area where Steve was living at the time.
Most of these musicians were the same ones who worked with Perry on Street Talk.

Being the fact that Against The Wall was put together throughout 1988-1989,I guess different session musicians were brought in whenever Perry felt like writing/recording.There are unfamiliar names like John Leo,Adrian Gurvitz,Billy Steel,etc.,however a few of them were constantly in his team.
These are the important ones.

Guitarists:
Michael Landau - LA session guitarist
Robert "Waddy" Wachtel - he's an LA session guitarist and producer (he co-wrote and co-produced Keith Richards' Main Offender among other things)

Keyboardists:
Randy Goodrum - he also co-produced Against The Wall
Bill Cuomo - he was a session keyboard player for years,co-wrote some of the songs,too

Drummers:
Craig Krampf - studio drummer (he's from Nashville)
Larrie Londin - awesome drummer (he recorded the drums on Street Talk & ROR too)

Bassists:
Bob Glaub - L.A. session bass player
Randy Jackson (the pink polka-dotted bass player,yep )

I'll bet Londin played drums on Friends Of Mine, that is a MONSTER drum track.

Someone asked him about this on Fan Asylum...The answer suggests that there are some songs that were NOT put on the remasters and the GH+5.

SP: It's possible but for now...... the rest of the songs are sprinkled across all my solo work.

so the real truth of the matter is,, we have recieved the best 7 songs off of Against the Wall already .. right? plus what ever songs were left over and used for Strange Medicine?

in the John Travolta movie Phenomenon,, there was a scene getting close to the end...he was outside speaking with his girlfriends 2 children sharing an apple.. there is a song that starts playing and it sounds just like IF YOU NEED ME CALL ME ,, the intro anyway ,,

i dont have that movie ,, did anyone else remember that ??

Yeah,basically there are 9 songs out,7 on GH+5 and 2 more on the FTLOSM remaster.That's far from being a full album.I'm guessing at least 4 or 5 more are hidden in the vaults.

Thank you Laura! You just put into type something that I've wondered about. Can't Stop reminded me of something and couldn't put my finger on it and that is exactly it! Love both those tunes.

...just as a thought, but.....maybe song similarities are not always done purposely....some are blatant ripoffs, of course...but some are created due to memory of whats been heard and the similaries are repeated but their source from stored thought not remembered so they are not done purposely.....
...many minds through time are bound to repeat similar thoughts and create similar things due to memory....sounds that can be related to or felt and that stay within the mind.

...great movie, by the way.....I like the part about interconnectiveness.....

Yea, to me the only real standouts are IFNMCM, Can't Stop and Friends Of Mine, though I do know When You're In Love For The First Time got some decent airplay in 98 when it came out.

The only place I heard it was in a CT CVS. Seriously.

Once I realized who it was, I went RIGHT TO a Music Store after my shopping.

im with nora here.. i had no idea any of that stuff was played on the radio when Greatest hits + 5 came out.. it was the same way when the I Stand Alone song came out... did this song get airplay??

The song got a little air play on soft rock/adult listening stations. The kind of stations that still play phil collins, etc. Nothing major though.

I can see why Sony turned down the release of ATW. The songs, while satisfying to the hardcore Perry fans, would not have had mass appeal. So this was to be the follow up to Street Talk (Steve was leaning against the wall on the ST cover), but got talked back for Journey, which turned into ROR album&tour.

He may already had some songs left over from ST and recorded, but I don't believe he started putting ATW together until mid89-90. Steve has said he didn't write or sing a note for 2 yrs, and it was the cameo at the BonJovi concert (Shoreline ‘89) that spurred him back to music. There is an article on FanAsylum where Lora was interviewing SP for JourneyForce newsletter. It started with them talking about the Bay Area earthquake and belated b-day wishes for Steve, and went to discussion about his upcoming album. The time period then must be around Feb 1990. So this album was eventually nixed by the label as not being good enough for release, but Steve has alluded to "outside forces beyond my control that wanted me only for Journey."

Anyway, we know he did get another solo album (FTLOSM 1994) passed Sony for release, but I wondered if it came with a condition that it be in a "band" format and that he had to tour behind it. And how about this hypothesis: He also had to reunite with Journey!

Haha- this would lend credence to the theory put forth and started an argument here awhile back that SP sabotaged the TBF tour to get back at Sony.

Sorry, my posts tend to get long-winded, but Journey stories are fascinating.

Great point by RedJoe above. Perry's "toast" in '87 but by '88 has a new album ready to go.

I think it’s really unfair that most fans assumed Steve left Neal/Jon hanging once ROR tour ended. I found this interview article archived at Perryville, indicating that Steve did tell them in ’89 (’90?) to go on without him, that (emotionally) he’s not ready to go back to Journey. This is the time Neal & Jon formed Bad English, right?

It’s been awhile since I read the article, I believe Jon also alluded to Steve wanting to do another solo album (Off the Wall?) and that they will wait for Steve.
