Here's some interesting thoughts from Mr Marcel Jacob (from few months ago) regarding Journey and their choice of singer.
Having followed Marcel's career for over 20 years as a fan and friend, Ive always enjoyed Marcel's blogs and this one is no exception. Marcel can truly see things from every different aspect and describe things the best way that only he can.


Journey, will they ever get back to be a real band ?

Probably not! I was planning to write about Journey later. But last night, the insomaniac that I am, I surfed sites I don't visit regularly. And I came across the information that there is a guy named Arnell Pineda that supposedly might be the new singer for Journey.
I had to check him out, like I did Jeremy and Hugo when the talk's been about them. This guy Arnell sings better than either of those two, but I still can't help but wonder what he sounds like when he is Arnell and not impersonating real vocalists...which he does pull off though.

But if I was Arnell I would think joining Journey over quite a bit. What kind of career would it be trying to be Steve Perry night after night ? Would I want to take the risk of public humiliation getting fired for no real reason, especially since I would have to sign a one way contract regulating my possibilities of giving my side of things ? Do I need to be given the silent treatment by Neal whenever he feels upset over something, which apparently happens more often than not ? Do I need to be treated like an intruder by their callous and moneygrubbing management whenever I wonder if I'll get paid, even though I'm supposed to be in the band ?
I think I'd tell them to fuck off...

They had the chance of moving forward with some prospect of having a new sound. Instead they seem to want to, much like old people who start to reminisce, go back to what they once were. Apparently they don't see that it will be fake. For Arnell Pineda, if he does join, maybe it will be a great move going from a cover band like the Zoo apparently is, to a better and more well paid cover band gig. For Schon & Cain maybe it's a good move going from a real singer like Jeff to someone who can fake it to their liking. For the Journey fans, well, if I was one, I would feel quite cheated.

Me, I am still angry about the inhuman manner in which Jeff was treated. Enough has been said about it, probably. I just hope people won't forget.

By the way: Edge of the blade is one of my favourite Journey songs. It was suggested some years ago that Human Clay should contribute a cover for a Journey tribute CD. That never came to fruition. But since we still have it and it will never be released anywhere, I chose to put it on here for a while, just to show interested people how cool Journey could have been had they not elected to look for a SP clone...hurry up and download, I'll eventually remove it.

Is that link still up or was this awhile ago?

Marcel is far , far, from your average poster here. You just cant take it, cause you know he is right about certain things.
He doesnt have to 'MOVE ON' or ' LOOK AHEAD'..... He wasnt involved with Journey, he just feels bitter over Journey screwing over his brother.
He is just putting up his blog, expressing his thoughts and feelings,,, not only on this subject, but many others.
He simply was telling his fans how he feels about the whole deal. What's wrong with that!?

I still don't get certain points of view. Why the fruck would a 30 year old band all of a sudden want to go in a new direction? C'mon...at this point it's ALL about the legacy sound, put out a few new tunes that attempt to re-capture the old glory days. Steve Perry or not, Journey is on it's last few years, if they want to go in a new direction....start a new band. But as an old time Journey fan, the last thing I want is a "new direction". Give me the dirty dozen, a few b sides, Edge Of The Blade, Luvin You Is Easy, and I'm good to go.

I was actually moved to write a new page tonight [early hours of 14 June], by thinking about our great pal, Jeff Scott Soto. Many of you have been writing to me about the shock of seeing him suddenly erased from the Journey website, as if he had never existed. It's a strange place that I view this from. Journey are, in a way, in a very similar position to ourselves. They have a legacy of hits which people will always want to hear played live. And their singer all through their Golden Age can no longer perform with them (Steve Perry, a truly luminous singer, in my opinion - a voice in a million). So the Journey guys (I wrote about them just a couple of months ago when they visited - Neal Schon is a fabulous player and an esteemed friend of mine) have a similarly difficult and maddeningly set of options to juggle.

Option 1: They (or we) throw in the towel and say, "It can never be as good, so let's put on our carpet slippers and live off the past". In other words, it's over, and all the talent and experience now goes for nothing. (Some 'fans' actually ask for this, unable to let the artists move on.)

Option 2: They go out on tour with a 'replacement' for the legendary singer - someone who looks and sounds like Steve Perry; in this case they find themselves in a stale situation, where they are stuck in the past. I was always against this in our case - I could not stand being a fossil, going out there and effectively saying, "We can't improve on what is past - we have nothing more to say".

Option 3: They forget the name "Journey" and start from scratch with a new line-up and a new 'image'. I know the Journey guys have been some way down that road. It's brave, but it's very unrewarding, because you tend to end up disappointing all the people who grew to love the old band, and effectively you are turning your back on everything you spent half your life building. Most times you end up playing the old hits anyway ... because why would you not want to play your own music?!

Options 4: They find a singer with something NEW to offer, a new foil, someone who has a musical world of his own, and is worth arguing with! Even someone who can steal some of the limelight. This is what I have LOVED, working with our wonderful colleague, Paul Rodgers - yes, we can play the old stuff, and yes we can be, in a sense, a continuation of Queen, but everything is new - the sky is the limit - because, like in the Old Days, we are working with a brilliant creator, we are sharing a new creative process, feeding off each other's ideas - experimenting, growing. This is what excites me, at the age of ...oh, forget it!!! ha ha ....

When I saw Journey this year, live in London, I felt excited, because I felt they had taken Option 4 by the horns. Knowing Jeff, I knew that he had jumped in without a parachute - he turned around the whole direction of his life, not only into being a worthy part of a great band, but pushing ahead, experimenting, looking for ways to be new, within the framework. I was truly astounded by his range, power, and interpretations, and his contact with the audience. The band looked energised - even dangerous. How cool.

Well, now we get a shock. I know in my heart Jeff would never have walked out on this - he is way too loyal. It saddens me that he seems to been shed like a used pair of boots. Those boots sure covered some good ground. You know, for all the reasons above, it's understandable that Journey might decide to make a U-turn. I just hope that they will be man enough to say so if this is the case, rather than hiding behind some kind of pretence that it was a mutual decision. That's an integrity thing, and a Karma thing. You have to own yer own poo. And I hope they will see fit to recognise Jeff's lasting contribution to the Family, and realise that he deserves to be treated with respect. And ... I desperately hope they don't go down that other road: Journey is worth a whole lot more than Option 2.

I must be out of the loop because I have no idea who he is. I didnt see where he said he was JSS brother. My comment was "he sounds like some posters on here, geez, let it go" not trying to be rude or pushy! If hes JSS bro then I guess he has all right to be pissed.

Oh yeah...Brian May's sappy thoughts again. If he was so impressed with Jeff he should've hired him for Queen. Journey did go with option 4...just not his option 4. He should keep his nose out of Journey's business. Either that or at least attack a real poser band...say Bon Jovi or Def Leppard. Thing is though, Journey's going to put out an album with Arnel that, as far as I can see, will have a 90% chance of staying 100% within the Journey sound without breaking any new ground or progressing at all. With Jeff, Journey had a chance to completely change their sound and go into what had been uncharted territory with the band. Arnel's a great singer, yes, but with JSS the band had an opportunity to explore a wealth of other influences. I agree with so many of Brian May's points and hold him in a higher artistic regard than Journey as a whole, because he's changed and reinvented what he's been about several times.

I was pretty sure he was in Talisman, but not certain. The bands you mentioned haven't ever had a song played on any radio station I listen to. Journey has. This guy is a nobody and his blog is as about as important as a rubber crutch in a polio war.

And since when does radio play truly have a bearing on how good an artist is? Marcel Jacob is a top bassist in my eyes, very original approach and incredible groove.

But after 20 years and at least 5 bands if you haven't had a hit you probably don't have enough "street cred" to be blogging about what Neal Schon and John Cain (over 170 MILLION units moved between the 2) should or shouldn't do!!! And if you do, which is fine, people shouldn't come here with the mindset that because he said something it's worth 2 dead dicks!!!

You are one of the few I can't call out on this. You're a true Soto fan (and his other projects) and not one of the convenient "Johnny come lately" ones. You liked his music and style and didn't become enamored with him because you got to meet him. I respect that.

We know now what Journey is planning to do. The way they talked it sounded like "Option 2", but now if they really do go ahead with new music it will be "Option 4" only with Arnel.

Remember that Brian May's words were written in June when there were a lot of us in shock (so to speak) over Jeff's firing. At that point all Journey was talking about was going back to their "legacy" and that sounded like "Option 2". Brian was also very complimentary to Neal and Journey in that opening paragraph but like a lot of us he wasn't happy with how Jeff was fired. And that's fair, it was not done with any class. We can believe that without turning Neal and Jon into Satans personified.

At the time this was written, Arnel was still a fuzzy You Tube singer!

Now, in terms of "owning your own poo", it's time for Journey to poo or get off the pot - either they will blow us away with Arnel and new music or they might as well change their name to "Option Two".

He has written over 100 (great) songs for/with Jeff and has played with him in bands such as Talisman, Yngwie, Eyes, Human Clay and Humanimal.

I bet you , he could and WOULD tell Journey to fuck off, if the opportunity came up.

I was pretty sure he was in Talisman, but not certain. The bands you mentioned haven't ever had a song played on any radio station I listen to. Journey has. This guy is a nobody and his blog is as about as important as a rubber crutch in a polio war.

You are one of the few I can't call out on this. You're a true Soto fan (and his other projects) and not one of the convenient "Johnny come lately" ones. You liked his music and style and didn't become enamored with him because you got to meet him. I respect that.

There better not be anything wrong with being a new JSS fan that had come to know him through Journey. I didn't know a thing about JSS until I started visiting MR.com, yeah, but after I purchase 3 JSS solo albums, 4 Talisman albums, Soul SirkUS, and Yngwie Malmsteen's first album and listen to them all in-depth.... I like to call myself a JSS fan. Never met him, either, though I'd love to one day.
