OT: Media Matters/Keith Olbermann

Yet more evidence of the stupidity of Media Matters and Keith Olbermann...

Olbermann also gave CNN Headline News' Glenn Beck the "Worst Person" "bronze" for saying on the March 4 edition of his program, as both Think Progress and Media Matters documented: "There are people -- and they said this about Bill Clinton -- that actually believe [Sen. Barack Obama] might be the Antichrist." He then asked evangelist John Hagee, founder and pastor of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, who recently endorsed Sen. John McCain for president: "Odds that Barack Obama is the Antichrist?" Hagee responded: "No chance."

What Olbermann and Media Matters failed to report is that the whole thing about Obama being the Antichrist was a complete joke. If you heard the segment with John Hagee, it was obvious that Glenn was completely joking. He wasn't even close to taking it seriously and, unless he is completely stupid and lacks the ability to understand sarcasm, there's no way that Olbermann didn't know that. Dude was flat-out lying. Hell, Beck even said on air that this would probably be taken used by people like Media Matters and Olbermann to try to make it look like he was completely serious.

I agree with Beck a lot more than I do Boortz. Boortz pisses me off sometimes and I probably disagree with him about half the time but I still enjoy his show. Both guys rip both Repubs and Dems, which I like.

I've been a Sick Freak for 5 years. Love Glenn.

Olbermann is an embarrassment to libs. He doesn't even listen with his own ears for context, but depends on Media Matters transcripts for his "news".

Here's how this whole thing came about... http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articl ... /198/7060/

Obermann interview:

PostPosted: Tue Mar 11, 2008 5:13 am
by infinityplusone
“I’m joined by senior white house press correspondent Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post. Good evening Gene…”

“Evening Keith”

“So are we just hearing another in a series of mis-steps, mis-truths, out of the tragically, morally (and that doesn’t count as a second adverb) mis-aligned Bush administstration, a pathological cat and mouse, Laurel and Hardy, nigh Tom and Jerrying, of the truth? Of Orseon Wellian proportions? Is the administration just genetically incapable of telling the truth. Is it anathema to their souls and exczema to their skins? When, in the history of human evolution, have we seen such a nefarious, unconscionably near-sighted, classist, racist, diest, elitist cabal of man-wolves lord over the manor in such a way, all the while laughing their lunatic laughs and casting upon us with their idiot glares?!?”

“That’s right, Keith”

“Next up our worst persons, with demon-bag Karl Rove trailing behind funnyman Rush Limbaugh and Fox Noise’s primate Bill-O..”

I was just reading that article. The part I like is...

Of course, the kicker to the whole endless story is: Glenn had predicted that exactly this would happen. (Free audio)

GLENN: By the way, this is all going to be transcribed by Media Matters today as a completely dead serious conversation.

GRAY: I know, I know.

GLENN: It's going to be great. There are going to be media alerts: Glenn Beck announces Obama is the antichrist. You watch. It's going to be everywhere. (Laughing.).

Yeh, just like Beck was merely "joking" when he inappropriately asked US Weekly's Dina Sansing about getting naked with him. Funny, she didn't find it particularly amusing.

Keith shouldn't need to specify when Beck is and isn't joking. Anyone who has seen or heard Glenn's show should be all-too-painfully familiar with Beck's one-note sophomoric delivery. Everything from the direly serious (Iran's nuclear ambitions) to the lightehearted (Britney Spears, Paris Hilton) is almost ALWAYS accompanied by an oh-so-clever quip and a Jim Varney-esque rubber faced contortion.

Perhaps most telling of all....throughout his entire oh-woe-is-me hand-wringing fest last night, Beck never once felt it pertinent to reveal that Media Matters provided FULL video and audio for each of the so-called uncontexualized quotes, which he cites.
Which is more than one can say about Beck, who's stock-in-trade is propaganda, and on recent instances condemned John Kerry for his words and made excuses for Limbaugh's, without ever playing clips of either two men.

The pretext of humor (successfully carried out or not) does not absolve one from the stupidity of their actions - especially not when you're on a national news channel.

Say, you know who else was "joking" recently? - Don Imus.

Olbermann frequently apologises for mistakes made on-air.
On occassions, I have even emailed the show and seen Keith apologise that very night.

I'm still waiting for O'Reilly to apologise for the completely invented "Paris Business Review", let alone every other lie he's spewed in his lifetime.

Considering Media Matters provided the full transcript, as well as over three minutes of tape (right up until the commerical break), I'm not sure what you're finding fault with. I just watched it again. Where is the deception again exactly?

More than likely you heard Beck's rant, and with nary so much a fact-checking click of the mouse, you took him on his faux-populist, psuedo blue collar word. Beck and his ilk play millions of you daily for the cheap right wing whores you are.

You're kidding me, right? I heard the entire segment at least twice. The guys were joking on air that outlets like Media Matters and Olbermann would be taking this seriously. You could hear the sarcasm in Beck's voice on that segment, something the transcript would not be able to pick up. IT WAS A FREAKING JOKE. If you can't hear the joke and sarcasm in his voice in that segment, you're purposely missing it. There's no other explanation.

[edit]

I just watched the segment you're referring to and I had actually thought you were referring to his original comments, which were from his radio show, not the television show. However, I found the same thing. Glenn is actually laughing when he asks Hagee about the whole antichrist thing and also makes mention that there were even people who []actually[/b] thought Clinton was the antichrist, in an attempt to show the whole thing was a joke.

Again, if you can't get that from the video or the audio from his radio show, which makes it even more clear that he was joking, you're either stupid or willfully ignorant.

You're the one who is getting played here by liars like Media Matters and Keith Olbermann. This one is as obvious as the nose on your face.

Anyone else ever notice that all the self righteous pro-life (McSame, Hagee, Beck) mother fuckers also have a hard on when it comes to war? Pro-life is great up until the time the fetus leaves the womb. Then it is fuck you, you are on your own. God help you if you harm a stem cell. But kill thousands in a war. Perfectly OK.

Kiss my ass. Beck and his wife adopted a special needs child, you moron. So did my wife and I. Regardless, I've been a regular listener to his show for about four years now and he doesn't even often mention the abortion issue. That's not very self-righteous, is it?

Again FULL audio and video was provided by Media Matters.
What con was perpetrated?
If Beck is so innocent, why not let the masses watch and decide that for themselves?
The magical hand of the free market and all that, y'know?

Media Matters simply holds a mirror up to the dystopian AM-talk radio freakshow, and let's the politically secular take a peak at the spasmodic Nazis lurking inside the tent.

Beck, like Hannity when called to the carpet, quickly straddles back to his default position of either "I'm simply an entertainer" or "I was joking."
How convenient.
Considering the most virulent and racially charged Obama smears have eminated from the right, its hard to believe Beck's intentions were purely harmless. Even if they were, knowing this story was out there, why help propagate it even further?
I have heard this anti-Christ/Obama meme repeated seriously on various right wing media outlets and it was even mentioned briefly in the Reverend Wright thread on this very forum.

This "joke" has all the entertainment value of Fox News' John Gibson rejoicing over Heath Ledger's death.
Or more topical, Beck breathing a sigh of relief over Anthony Mighella's death this week.

This sociopathic drivel ain't got nothing on Howard Stern. You guys are seriously fucked up.

Nader has had a great idea for some time called "Draft at the Top." If and when Congress and the President decide to take the country to war, all politicians with children of age will be automatically conscripted into the military. Sounds good to me.

Say, where is the outcry from the Right on Matt Druge revealing Prince Harry's undisclosed confidential location in Afghanistan and jeopardising his unit?

Being a Beck listener, 3 hours a day for the last 5 years, I know Beck. But even if you don't know Beck, if you're listening, you damn well know he was MOCKING people who were trying to say Obama is the anti Christ. It's a ridiculous thought and he was making that point. I also think sometimes he does these things to prove his point that Media Matters will jump all over it and make it look like he's saying something he isn't. They are just that predictable.

I do know Beck. Well enough to know that nearly everything he says is interspersed with dunce-hat sarcasm, and rubber faced contortions (he actually used to broadcast right out of my city of Philadelphia). It's his fail safe. He can claim to be a "serious thinker" when he so desires, and when he finds himself actually held accountable for his incendiary asshattery, he can just as quickly retreat to "I was only making a joke."

He has done it time and time again.

Barb wrote:Being a Beck listener, 3 hours a day for the last 5 years, I know Beck.

Ignorance be not proud.
A study came out that revealed over 12% of Americans get their news from talk radio. Given that you listen to Beck's show in it's 3-hour entiriety (something that defies the statistical listening average of the adult radio listener) I take it you are one of these poor misguided fools.
I'd like to think most people have higher standards for their news than a ex-drug addict who never went to college.

Believe it or not (and I'm sure you won't), I don't listen to Beck for political commentary. He is actually very funny and I enjoy listening to his take on social issues, family and current events. I am not all about politics and neither is Glenn. It is precisely that reason that I don't like Hannity or Limbaugh. I'm not motivated by politics. Oh, and I don't rely on Glenn Beck or talk radio for news. I am proud to be a GB fan and supporter. Calling me ignorant for it doesn't elevate your own intellect nor does it prove your point.

Yes, I like to get his take on these things. Sometimes I agree, sometimes I don't. I love how you liberals immediately pull out the ignorant card as soon as you find out someone listens to a particular talk radio personality. I'm a pretty well rounded person. I enjoy Glenn and trust him. But I live in the Bay Area. If you think I don't have the liberal POV shoved down my throat during every local news cast, you're insane. :D

If you trust a guy who derails John Edwards regularly for his wealth, and then turns around and signs a new radio contract for 50 million dolars, you are worse than ignorant. You are a lumbering catatonic GOP sapsucker.

The media aren't liberal. Most local stations are owned by multi-billion conglomorates like GE or Disney. Content choices are made top down and hinge on the bottom line, not ideology.
