Queen guitarist Brian May is now officially Chancellor of John Moores University in Liverpool, England. When he's not playing music, May is studying science -- and has been since taking up astrophysics in his 20s. Now the 60-year-old guitarist will start his fellowship, which was awarded for his contributions to astronomy. According to the BBC, May was officially installed as chancellor at a ceremony with 500 people. He's taken the spot previously held by former Prime Minister Tony Blair's wife, Cherie. He'll represent the university at various events, and will also handle the school's graduation ceremony.
May studied Astrophysics at Imperial College, London, but left school in the early 1970s to play with Queen. Just last year, he went back to complete his PhD thesis and was awarded his doctorate.
In a statement released by the university, he said: "I am passionate about education and lifelong learning. It really doesn't matter how old you are or what stage of your life you are in, it is never, ever too late to start learning."
May will join Queen on tour this fall, again with guest singer Paul Rodgers, formerly of Bad Company and Free. They have recorded a new album, which is expected out September 1st.
