SP has not been in the band a very long time.

SP gets paid so that should make you happy.

"Relationships" are a two-way street, and I don't think Steve Perry gives a fuck about me (or Journey fans in general) so I see no reason to feel "guilty" about buying the new album, or any album for that matter. Translation-You're nuts!!!

Another Perry fan here....

I bought it also. I like a couple of the new songs and just had to have Deen's Mother/Father performance on the dvd. It was only $11. It wasn't one of those 'had to have' cds the first day it goes on sale. Had a listen to a couple of the re-records, sorry but a total waste IMO when you have the perfection of the originals......threw it in my glove box where I'm sure it will sit for the remainder of its existance. No guilt here. Nothing has changed, there is still only 3 singers I'd put my travel $$ down to cross the border to hear live! 2 of them in just over a week!

Felt like you were cheating on Steve? Wow... well if you want to call a spade a spade, he's been quite the rocky lover, huh? Empty promises, showing up only when he feels like it, won't even throw us a bone to let us know if he's interested. Just took his stash of the memories and scampered off to Whereversville. Personally, feeling guilt over buying an album because you're afraid it'll make the former lead singer sad is just plain fruity. The only thing Espee gets paid on now (from my understanding) is partial credit royalties. In other words, 1/3 or 1/2 a cent (Exaggeration) for every song d/led or bought in some other fashion. Now, I could be COMPLETELY wrong on this. Please correct me if I am.

I'm kidding. I don't feel THAT way. He can do as he wishes and I'm happy to support it (or wait for it, or whatever). But what music I listen to or don't listen to isn't governed by what Steve Perry would think about it. Being an artist himself, I'm thinking he would think I was stupid as hell to forgo any kind of musical interest based on what someone else would think of it. Welcome! Don't worry, I felt the same weirdness several years ago when I re-discovered Journey/SP and, Steve Augeri was the 'new' singer. Just enjoy the music - whatever Journey era you prefer...I LOVE STEVE PERRY AND ALWAYS WILL, but I can still appreciate the other Journey songs and the other five lead singers (except, for me I prefer the original Classics with SP).

I think a lot of people act like that though. If you buy a Journey CD, you're really hurting Steve Perry. Hardly...
If you're buying THIS Journey CD, you're putting money in Perry's pocket. If you buy any New Journey CD, you're nudging Perry into the "Oh, Journey's putting out an album now, I'd better give my 'faithful' fans a crumb of info about what I've been up to" mode. Basically, without Journey doing a new album, you'd never hear from Perry again, so I think it's a good thing to support Journey.

Journey is Perry and Schon together. Simple as that. No matter how many hours of analysis we put into this and no matter how big or small the contributions are from all the other members the true heart and soul of the band, the true genius and the source of everything that makes this band so unique lies in that partnership...and deep down I think we all know it.

So I'm a Journey fan alright. And feeling crappy about enabling a version of the band which doesn't feature this extraordinary partnership...well, I don't see how that makes me any less of a fan.

And in any case...for all my talk....I still bought the new album and I'm seeing them in concert tomorrow night for the third time in three years. So I still end up supporting the band even though I know that what I'm hearing and seeing is all a bit bogus.

Where do you draw the line Rhiannon? Are we meant to cry tears of guilt for the roadie they fired in 1976 or the nice lady who did the accounts in Herbie Herbert's office?

I understand where the sentiment comes from, but I don't share it.

The re-records, while well done, don't hold a candle to the originals, even with the better recording technology. The performances from the band as a whole are technically flawless but are also cold and lack the depth and heart of the originals.

I was really jazzed by Revelation in the beginning, but the more I played it, the faster I lost interest. Arnel's voice is technically great, best they've had since Perry, but the character of his voice doesn't do it for me. Comes off bland to my ears on the new material. Not trying to be insulting, but overall, he sounds like a teenager. Great voice, just sounds like it needs maturing or something. Perry just has this 'sound' about his voice that can't be defined. It's not the vibrato or the notes he can hit or how long he can hold them. It's just the sound of it. Really has depth and his delivery has yet to be matched IMO. Maybe it's his nose? Who knows?

It is their best effort post Perry, but that magical 'it' factor is still missing for me. Players are easily replaced, but chemistry isn't and Perry's voice fit Neal's guitar like no other singer will. He just knew what to do with Neal's playing. Listening to Arnel wailing in the background of The Journey Revelation and you can tell he doesn't have the same feel for it.

Still, I'm looking forward to seeing them in concert. At least the songs are going to be sung live the way they deserve to be and watching Neal do his thing is always a treat. Maybe Arnel will fall into place by the end of the tour and have some meaningful input on the next album? Maybe I'll like that one better? I hope so.

But overall, no, I don't feel guilty. If Perry wanted to be in Journey he would be in Journey. It's his choice.
