Demo tape... landed in Herbie's hands. Herbie dug Steve out of turkey shit, polished him up, made him a star. And they all lived happily never after.

It's pretty much like Rhiannon said. Journey's label were about to drop them unless they did something to get some radio play. Herbie Herbert said something to the effect of, "hey guys, this is your new singer, like it or not".

And he was repaid by being fired.

Isn't Herbie's version something like Steve blackmailed his coke dealer that he would rat him out to his mom for selling drugs if he didn't give Herbie the Demo tape?

His coke dealer being his cousin, yep, that's the story HH told.

Bwahahaha...
...but it's kinda sad. No wonder Herbie's a bit bitter/vocal. I don't blame him.

A dude named Matt Carty interviewed Herbie Herbert some 10 or so years ago, and it's a damn good read. He posts here quite a bit as 'livintodo'

http://members.cox.net/mrcarty/

Andrew interviewed him a couple of months ago and it's another damn good read. Lots of great info to be had in both of these interviews.

yup.

Andrew : I think you keep your ear to the ground though right?

Herbie : A little bit, yeah. I mean Neal will call me and tell me all the things he's doing and of course and way back in the very beginning when he first found this singer on YouTube he called me and had me listen to it.

I read that SP also worked hard to earn a living in the past. At one point, he even worked as a construction worker with his step-father.

It's interesting that SP was a fan of Journey in the mid-70s and asked them if they needed a singer. I happened to be listening to Time3 this morning ('Cookie Duster', 'Nickel and Dime', etc.) and wondered how did SP think that his voice would fit here? I think he was prescient. So really it was Steve himself that could see himself as the lead singer long before HH did.

Thanks for posting this bio...since I was just wondering about this myself today & wasn't about to search for the answer. :)

Yes...if you enjoy listening to a guy consumed by bitterness and self-pity then this interview will be right up your street.

And what a total unsurprise that the journalist who didn't ask Herbert one tough question or provide any balance or context whatsoever names himself after a track from Arrival.

A classic moment of Augeri era propaganda....

Don't get me wrong Rick...even I had to laugh at all that "jive motherfucker" chat at times...but this interview has become the manual for every two-bit Perry basher that has sounded off on this forum over the last five years.

LOL - I always read those and think the same thing: A loud, arrogant asshole, complaining about a quiet, controlling asshole. Imagine the two not getting along! As controversial as that "Behind The Music" show was, Herbie came across as one of the biggest SOBs as well.

God, as talented as Herbie is, you'd think a little modesty would benefit him. No need to hire a PR person, he just loves to brag about his accomplishments personally.

Still I feel sorry for any animal bred in overcrowded dark conditions for the sole purpose of being eaten.
Never to see the light until the final curtain call.

It's just sad.

Give a lil thanks to the turkey
I think he said they were so dumb that they don't even know how to come in out of the rain.
Well the rain is cool
& it helps them to feel they are alive.
Everything on this earth big & small
deserves some reverance.

That's all...
