Wow, I've watched the Hear 'N Aid "Stars" video several times in the last year, but I just ran across this and haven't seen it since the album came out! It's sort of a "making of" documentary on the song, and this portion covers the guitar players -- has an extended bit with Neal, and it's great! What I remember most about this from when I first watched it was the dude from Spinal Tap talking about how he should use his guitar for a coffee table after watching Yngwie Malmsteen, and how he's glad he adds the "J." to his name to separate him from all the other Yngwie Malmsteens... haha! Great video! Now I'm going to see if they have the clip about the singers...

What's funny is out of all those shredders doing the solos, I think my favorite work was by Donald Roeser of Blue Oyster Cult -- really had some groove to his playing and added a great bit to the song.

Brad Gillis' work was also impressive, because he seems to have really resisted the urge to shred it up with everyone else (which he certainly could do), and what they used from his stuff in the finished song added some really interesting effects -- his work really stands out as well.

Don Dokken gets the first words in the special! And the interaction between Dio in the control room and Don while he's testing some vocals in the studio is great!

LOL -- I can't believe I actually started a Neal Schon thread and didn't get one response... So I'm going to do something I never, ever have to do... BUMP!!!

C'mon, man! That solo by Schon is killer! And someone mentioned awhile back that during the making of this project, the other guitar players were just in awe of him. Kinda like they were of Perry during the "We Are The World" sessions. I love seeing Neal cut loose in a rock environment, and along with Hardline's first album, this is my favorite metallic Schon work to date! Would love to see him continue to do heavier stuff on the side.

Didn't George Lynch comment something to the effect that "Wow, that dude's a lot better than I thought" or something like that?

I also really liked Carlos Cavazo's solo. I never thought much of him but he played pretty well there.

I know I am biased, but it sure wasn't him causing any retakes. They should have let him and a few others record their respective parts and go home and let the others flounder about trying to measure up.

I dig Rudy Sarzo. I was surprised when we went to see Deep Purple and BOC opened... there was Rudy playing with them. It was cool!

Back to the guitarists - I love this footage. Particularly of Vivian Campbell.

Now that I've listened to it... haha... you are right! I like the Paul Stanley version better! More power, and Paul's voice is well suited for it. From what I remember of the Paul Dean version, it was overproduced, as was much from that era. I wonder if a clear version of the Stanley version exists?

Around 9 or 10 years ago, I think the "Can't Stop The Rock" tour was playing in town at an amphitheater here. I was with my girlfriend at the time and my mom/stepdad and my grandmother eating in a local restaurant. I walked in to join them, and my 84-year old grandmother got up to find an extra chair. She asked this gentleman sitting along drinking a cappuccino if he would mind if she took one of the chairs from his table, and he said, "No, please..." I looked over and it was Rudy Sarzo! I told everyone at the table and they thought that was pretty neat, though of course they didn't really understand the significance to me -- only that he was a "rock star". Before we left I walked over and said hello and thanked him for the chair, and wished them well for the show and he was very polite and shook my hand. Nice guy!

i think more than one guitar player commented that neal suprised them, not a great track but a good efforti ve the 12" and lp signed by about 90% of the people who played on it, still need to see BOC and get those guys.

Vivian Campbell is a punk. Plays the nice guy role publicly, but I don't buy it. Dio is one of the coolest guys in the business. To piss him off tells me everything I need to know.

i'm slow but I catch up.

when Neal was in Corpus for the legacy, 3 hour show year, he told me and a guy I brought with me from the Guitar center, about recording that and what he had done immediately prior, blah blah, graphically described naturally, just like it was normal conversation.

i'll go go back and watch again, Rip, cuz ya know i always fast forward to the Neal clips. But now since ImADorkeen, i should reivew and notice.

exactly. Steve was just like buttah and all the rest had their little charts. that one little solo sets him apart from all the other voacalists, evah, forevah. he's the voice. period. that is my FAVORITE video of SP. what 10 secs? that's all it takes.
