A friend asked me this morning.....what is a good antivirus program to get? I told her of a couple I have had, but I am in no way an expert. Since we have a bunch of computer savy people here, what do you use and what are the good antivirus programs out there? Free or otherwise. What about programs like Avast? Nod32? One Care? Norton?

I'm not a big fan of the personal edition of Symantec AntiVirus but the corporate edition has worked well at my office. I've also heard good things about AVG. I would personally stay well away from McAfee. I've never really liked their products at all.

I use Avast. It's always up-to-date and I never have a problem. Someone that doesn't know how, or just wouldn't take the time to do regular spyware scans with products like Spybot, might benefit from a more fully functional antivirus program. I'm hearing good things about BitDefender. http://www.bitdefender.com but Kaspersky Internet Security always hovers around the top of the reviews. Thanks all! I did mention Avast to her and told her NOT to get Norton. I used to have Avast and never had a problem with it at all. When I got my new comp a while back though it came with Live One Care I think's it called. My daughter has Avast on her comp but when the trial period ran out, don't you have to pay when you register? Maybe I'm wrong......hope so, cuz I'm not that happy with One Care and would rather go back to Avast too if that's the case.......hmmm.

By the way Gunbot, was nice meeting ya after the JSS show last weekend.......it was cool to put a face to a few more MR names.

The Avast free edition requires you to register again after the first year but there is no charge, it remains free, just use the links I provided to get the correct version.

On the topic of Anti-virus - I have to give a definite shout-out to the NOD product suite. Very lite client, doesn't take up too many resources, and so far, quite effective for email, interenet and general application safety. Check it out!

I had Norton on my first laptop when I bought it. It was horrible. So I wiped it and went with the AVG free one.
Nod 32 is supposed to be good, but it costs.

I've grown to HATE Symantec security products, and now apparently they realize how much they suck! Such an awakening can only be linked to thing – a drop in revenue, because everything they do is going to be tied to the almighty dollar.

They are looking to actually cut the fat about about 75% in their products, give clean and absolute installation/uninstallation, improve performance and I hope quit trying to completely take over a person’s system – exactly the things I’ve complained about, and the reasons I’ve completely sworn off their products. Apparently, enough people complain about the same to cause them to change.

I went with Kaspersky because at that time, BitDefender didn't support 64 bit operating systems, which I had. Now they do so I may switch.

Also, DO NOT go to their websites or to stores and buy ANY AntiViruses. Go on to eBay and get them, and make sure you're getting the PHYSICAL product, NOT a download. All the ones on ebay are OEM versions that are sold to System Builders. They are greatly discounted from the store bought and Website bought ones. Some also come with 2 and 3 year licenses. Great bang for the buck

I have used AVG the free edition from download.com I have never had a problem with it and suggest it to everybody that I can.
