OT - Ethical Dilemma # 1 - The Cave Problem

Imagine a group of scientists exploring sea caves. When all of a sudden there is a small tremor and water starts to fill the cave.(it is also gonna be high tide soon). One scientist, a rather portly fellow, panics and starts climbing the rope - and subsequently gets stuck in the opening to civilization. Seconds matter here, as the longer it takes to get out - the more people are certain to die.
What do you do? Kill fatso, and get out. Or leave him be, and everyone will die?
Do you sacrifice the one to save the many? Very much a Utilitarian issue here....

You don't purposely kill the guy but you try to get him out first and save everyone.

O.K. in all seriousness. If you kill the man his body will still plug the whole. You have to dig him out. If you are in a cave use bat guano to make him slick and slide him out!

If there are no vice grips available, have some one go up behind him and bite down real hard on his little toe, That will get his ass through that fucking hole.
I was in a situation like this where I used the vice grips on the person so I know that it will work.

As usual Star Trek provides the answer: The needs of the many are outweighed by the needs of the few, or the one.

Speaking of Spock, I think it was Yulog that had an awesome avatar of Spock riding a bike with Kirk's head as the wheels.

I know I saved it someplace but I can't find it right now.

BACK TO THE CAVE DILEMA...
Obviously the hole was big enough for the man to fit in, or he wouldn't have made it in. A couple of people could help him get through the hole, and they all get out alive! All this talk about "Holes" is gettin me worked up!

That episode was called "The trouble with Tribbles"...I have seen every episode of Star Trek at least 15 times up to and including the last incarnation...best show ever on TV Sci-fi...except the Stargate series which is fantastic...
