What Direction Will Journey Take Next Album After Revelation?

i think it will be very interesting indeed to see how the next album in the arnel era shapes up.if 'revelation' is any indication i think they could very well top the charts on the next release if they make one that holds up as well and is good as 'revelation' is.

one thing i'm wondering is would they go the wal mart or maybe best buy route or would they release it differently than last time.it will also be interesting to see if the guys head back into the studio quickly to keep the momentum going or will they take a break for a while.knowing neal they won't be away for long and its good to keep striking while they have a good thing happening.

i also wonder who they would take on the next tour.i think a journey/boston/styx tour would be incredible but thats just my opinion.since this will be the second arnel release we could see a bit more arnel era stuff thrown in the setlist.if this next album is as successful as the first they could end up having as many as six or seven arnel songs in the setlist but that may or may not happen.

it will also be interesting to hear ideas for the next album and i don't think it would stray too far from the sound they have with 'revelation'.....

I think a better question is: What songs will they needlessly cover on the next album?

They haven't touched Arrival yet.

Maybe, a thread on album title suggestions, and a subsequent poll, are in order...just for fun.

I expect another kick ass album along the lines of revelation. I would imagine we'll find out what Arenl brings to the table from a songwriting point of view. I suspect that the chemistry will be great as Arnel has penned some really good songs in the past. I think some time off will rejuvenate the guys and the new album will be very good. I'd stick to the Wal Mart strategy as there's no reason to fix what isn't broke!!! 3 ballads, 3 mid tempo songs and 4 or 5 rockers would be great!!!

I say they head in a westerly direction, to get closer to that "legacy sound"

I suspect they will get another sophomore jinx, like they did with Augeri...and pout out another stinker like Red13/Generations....just MY opinion tho'....

Maybe they'll just pull a Queensryche and call it "Escape II" or "Frontiers II". Or pull a Megadeth/Metallica and throw in a sequel song to one of their greatest hits... like "Still Haven't Stopped Believin" or something like that. Then again, maybe not.

Honestly I'd bet on a very similar album to Revelation, at least the next two in that same direction. And I wouldn't bet on any more-than-one-word album titles anytime soon. Maybe something like "Soar", but again that sounds too much like "sore" and could be very off putting.

They can't afford to sit out very long. They'll give AP downtime and will be back soon after.

The sales package will have to be similar to move physical units. A dvd and maybe a cover cd of lesser known tracks.

As for new, I wouldn't be surprised if they reworked stuff off Arrival. Some of those tracks always seemed "unfinished" to me. The general public hasn't heard it so if they can make the tunes hookier and tighter they could have some winners with the results.

I don't see them getting too experimental. They know what's working, they know AP's range and they have to capitalize on their current success.

Why not??? They've had several. "Look Into The Future", "Dream After Dream", "Raised On Radio", "Trial By Fire", and "Red 13", all come to mind.

I dunno... they just tend to gravitate towards the one word titles. Seems to be their "thing", I guess.

As consistent as 'Revelation' is, nothing on it even remotely touches Higher Place.
If Schon needs to write with Blades to pick up the lyrical slack, so be it.
Cain's cookie-cutter formula has run it's course, I think.

Aren't a couple of Revelation's tracks formerly Arrival demos?

My only question here is: Will Walmart want them? I know Revelation was a success, but how much of that was people buying it when they saw the hits on it? Walmart only wanted the retreads at first. I hope Azoff could pull something off with them again, but I'm just wondering if Walmart would do it without older material to go with it. Hopefully they'll realize how good the new stuff was and will just let them release a totally new CD. IF that's the case, would it only cost 5-6 bucks since 2 CD's and a DVD was 10.88?

Maybe so, must've missed that. I meant they may steal from the actual Arrival tracks. New song(s) from parts of other songs.

Signs of Life always reminds me of another version of IBAWY.

Please, no more retreads. If Jon's got all these songs on his computer, use them for christ's sake. It should be no less then 12 NEW songs minimum.

I'm glad they redid Faith In The Heartland. That's become one of my top two songs on Revelation. And if Augeri gets a writing credit on it, he's getting paid also. Win win for everyone.

If the retreads are what it takes to get the Wal deal again, I'm ok with it since it won't matter to me. I played cd2 once just to check it out and its sat in the case ever since. Never bothered to rip to the mp3 player.

As for the new cd, absolutely don't want any more covers.

Please no butterfly, and no "mo bile phone" either.

I wouldn't expect anything new from the band until next fall at the earliest. I also expect a straight up one disc release. What could you put on a second cover disc to make it an impulse buy?

Want put a wager on it? I'll bet they have a new cd out before July next year.

In addition to a new cd, I wouldn't mind if they included a covers of other peoples stuff. As Rush did with Feedback and DL on Yeah!

Done right and with some varied tracks, that could be a great disc.

I hope they don't do any covers. It'd be nice to not hear people say "oh their success is based on the fact that they covered older material" which I think is total BS. I DO hope they add another DVD to whatever they release and I think all classic rock bands should do this. I could care less if it's another live DVD or not. It's a bonus and I'd still watch it. The Vegas DVD is great, I've watched it a bunch already.

SJ- When you say Arnel's penned some great songs, where are those?

The stuff on Revelation was recorded when, around Nov. maybe? Album hit in June. When are they going to record this year, Jan. or Feb.? It would be a pleasant surprise if something comes out this summer but personally, I would not want something rushed or loaded with covers unless it's other people's hits. No more Journey covers, let's be original please.

My guess is they'll take a month off and get back in the studio. They might be writing on the road. Arnel & Cain might be writing just as Perry & Jon did during the Escape tour.

I agree about the Journey covers except secretly I'd like to hear a Pineda version of ATF. Same with Augeri, wish I had clip of him doing that tune.

You can't go wrong with Jack Blades. He can still write stuff that flat-out smokes...the one element that was missing off "Revelation". Another "World Gone Wild" would be nice.

I doubt it. The buzz will be gone, and the "package" has been done. No matter how good, I don't see it doing as well as "Revelation".

mikemarrs wrote: one thing i'm wondering is would they go the wal mart or maybe best buy route or would they release it differently than last time.

I see them sticking with WalMart IF they can come up with a new "package" idea. I do NOT see another disc of Joureny re-records. But I do see a bonus disc, whether it be a DVD or something else...maybe a live disc?

mikemarrs wrote: it will also be interesting to see if the guys head back into the studio quickly to keep the momentum going or will they take a break for a while.knowing neal they won't be away for long and its good to keep striking while they have a good thing happening.

I think they SHOULD get another CD out quickly but I see the band taking time off to be with their families (as usual...'they deserve it'). Maybe then another "Evening with Journey" Tour somewhere. This success is nice, but I still don't see the band doing much to interfere with how they have lived their lives for the past 10 years.

mikemarrs wrote: since this will be the second arnel release we could see a bit more arnel era stuff thrown in the setlist.if this next album is as successful as the first they could end up having as many as six or seven arnel songs in the setlist but that may or may not happen.

I doubt that as well. They might continue to play "After All These Years" since it is almost a radio hit. But I see the band doing as they always have, dropping all other "new" material. It will still be the dirty dozen with a couple of the most recent tracks. Still only 3-5 "Arnel-era" tracks...

mikemarrs wrote:it will also be interesting to hear ideas for the next album and i don't think it would stray too far from the sound they have with 'revelation'.....

I DO see the sound being the same. They have discovered that it can work. (Of course Arrival didn't stray too much, but "Revelation" sounded better.)

"Dream After Dream" doesn't count, that was the name of the movie.
"Look Into The Future" is prior to their commercial visibility.
"Raised On Radio" is an era many would like to forget...as is "Trial By Fire".
"Red 13 was an experimental EP for the fans and it was highly unsuccessful commercially.

The band will stick to one-word titles...it's "their thing".
