Okay, so I'm into The Beatles. Yeah, I know a lot of MR-ers don't appreciate them, it's cool. But, I was reading some Beatles news web sites and happened upon something about Pete Best and his band's new album. Curiosity got the better of me and I went to Amazon and listened to the tracks.

It's REALLY a decent record. Certainly better than Oasis' newest and Ringo's (which sucked so hard that it blew as well).

Take a listen, I was really surprised:

It's good British pop. If the guy was smart, he would've released it under another name. He shoulda called it a Rutles album. Actually, check it out, it's pretty decent.

Oh, I'm totally the same. "Pete Best... who cares??" but I just happened to hit those samples on Amazon.com and it's really good. Sounds more like Badfinger (totally underrated band) than the Beatles, which is okay with me. I love British power pop and this stuff's really good. Check it out, I'm not kidding. I think his other solo albums were NOT good. I've heard they're dreadful, but never paid attention. Something in the article made me check this out and I'm really surprised that it's not a horrible album. I'd rather hear this stuff than a lot of stuff getting airplay now.

Yeah, me too. But that's because I grew up with their music. It always amazes me to hear about youngsters (relative to me), many of whom weren't even born when the Beatles made their last record, are so into them .

SJ wouldn't be caught dead listening to the Beatles, for instance .

I love them because it's excellent music. Timeless. Great singing. Great songwriting, great playing, etc.

I don't know where I got it from. My parents were before the Beatles era so that was never really played around me growing up, and I was certainly after their era... osmosis? Either way, I dig it, baby.

I saw a repeat of their Sullivan '64 in the 70s and got into them as a kid. Got all the records. Remember hearing their solo stuff as it was released back then.

Hope the Pete Best stuff is good, I never followed any of his stuff though. I know he put out a couple records.

I read up on them so knew all the Beatles stuff but a kid walked into class singing LTS and I didn't know where it was from. Hadn't gotten into Journey just yet.

I'd always wondered exactly why Pete Best got dumped from the Beatles, because he was a better drummer than Ringo, had a lot of charisma and was very popular with their fans. Don't know much about his solo career, but always thought is was sad that he never made the transition to another working band. No idea what his abilities to select and write music are - the guy is a drummer after all!

Pity the album cover has to reference the Beatles - personally I've suspected his inability to let go of 'missing the wonder ride to fame and fortune' has always hampered him. But I hope it does well, and I'll have to try to check it out sometime.

Arianddu ... didn't know anything about Pete Best either, other than he was their very first drummer. Then I bought the Beatles Anthology series dvds a few years ago. The impression I got from the backstory is Pete didn't exactly gell with John&Paul. He was also a magnet for the ladies, what with his matinee good looks, so there might have been some jealousy (or creative distractions) going on there. He got kicked out for Ringo, who was kind of an easygoing, happy-go-lucky kind of guy -- the antithesis of Pete Best. In retrospect, Ringo was perfectly suited to go into that group, on the cusp of taking the world by storm with their music. Remember, the other 3 were gawky, shy kids barely out of their teens ... from blue-collar Liverpool. Ringo was a little older, more "worldly." I thought he stole the movie, A Hard Day's Night ... which was at the beginning of Beatlemania.

The thing about the Beatles, and I'm certainly no music expert or historian, is how they evolved from writing/playing sugar pop songs to the most deep, culturally related music imaginable. Any music journalist/critic will tell you that they were the singularly most influential pop/rock group of their generation -- quite possibly, of all time. It's really too bad that some music fans (SJ Dan, for instance, only because he's been the most vocal against them here, that I know of) don't see their brilliance.

Their "sugar pop" were amazing tunes too. Songs like "She Loves You", "A Hard Days' Night", "I Want to Hold Your Hand" were such incredible songs and for the first time, it was a self-contained unit. The writers, singers, and musicians were one and the same. It was an amazing thing. I think they were better pre-67 than after, but I still love all of their stuff.

Check out that Pete album. It's really good.

Oh, I love their early songs, Brywool. I remember, as a little lass, being led by my older brother and sister on each hand, walking into the dark theatre to see A Hard Day's Night. No idea what the screaming was all about, but the music was soooo good ... got me bopping up and down. That day was my initiation to music with singing, and I was completely transformed to love rock n roll.

The later years, with the long hair and crazy anti-war, drug-addict stuff, I didn't care for too much. Music still good, though.

hey, Bry, DrFU and I did the Beatle thing after Firefest. took the train to Liverpool, stayed at the new Hard Day's night hotel,which is next door to the cavern club, rode the magical mystery tour bus (it was just a tour bus--nothing fancy) that took us all around to the stomps--Penny Lane, Strawberry fields, the 'bank', the barber shop, the childhood homes, etc. mucho cool.

the tour guide said that Ringo was the better drummer--Pete was good live but couldn't do the studio stuff apparently. they had to keep redoing the songs in the studio. so they got Ringo, who was in another band but decided to take a chance with the Beatles.

Pete never said anything bad about the Beatles and had no hard feelings. he played 3 songs on the anthology and his brother in law, or someone, talked him into asking if he should be getting a royalty. they said we'll see how the album sells first and then we'll let you know. it ended up being a ton of money!! i forget what he was doing--something un -music related. so he used the $$ to GET BACK to the music.

interesting stuff. my pics will include lots of Beatlemania--if I ever get around to posting.
