Band Wreckers and the Happy Bands They Destroy
Posted Thu Nov 20, 2008 5:30am PST by Shawn Amos in GetBack

Band wreckers are the worst kind of singers. They are those dudes who take advantage of an unstable group relationship and insert themselves in the middle. They break into a band and destroy their happy home. And who suffers? The children do. The children always suffer. All of those fans whose childhood memories of beloved bands are forever dashed by seeing step-singers replace their favorite vocalists.

These interlopers may take their hijacked groups to new commercial heights, but it's always a Pyrrhic victory. Their success is without honor. In most cases, however, the band wrecker gets to travel with his eloped bandmates on the road to career oblivion and package tours at county fairgrounds. It's a fate they deserve for cheating in the first place. Cheaters never win. You hear that, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones? You can't replace Robert Plant. A band makes a promise that's as deep as a marital vow: 'til death do us part. Remember that before you decide to hit the road with the winner of some Led Zeppelin sound-a-like contest.

In fairness, I have to blame the band too. It takes two to make a thing go right — or wrong. These bands know better and so should their second-rate frontman replacements. So, here are the worst band wreckers ever. They all have a special place in rock hell reserved for them. A place where hack tribute groups play all day and Barry Manilow plays all night.

VAN HALEN with SAMMY HAGAR
Van Halen are serial cheaters. First they broke up with David Lee Roth for Sammy Hagar. Then they cheated on Sammy for Gary Cherone. THEN they bring back Diamond Dave but boot bassist Michael Anthony. The Sammy affair is the most painful, though. It's like seeing an ex-spouse make a bunch of money after you split.

INXS with JD FORTUNE
OK, their lead singer died, but no one deserved such a shameless disrespect to Michael Hutchence's memory. And then the best they can do is some Vegas wannabe Lizard King named JD Fortune? They should have just formed a whole new band and changed their name. They could have called themselves NOXS.

THE DOORS with IAN ASTBURY
These guys actually DID change their name — TWICE. They’ve called themselves Doors of the 21st Century and Riders on the Storm, but it didn't matter or help. This was a total train wreck in every way. Thankfully, Ian Astbury came to his senses and returned his real family, the Cult.

QUEEN with PAUL RODGERS
The remaining members of Queen think that keeping Paul Rodgers’ name separate from the band name on the marquee will cause people to forget that he's not a band wrecker. Wrong! He's still a band wrecker, and Freddie is turning over in his grave for sure.

JOURNEY with About Every Other Singer in the World
This band has gone through three different lead singers all trying to replace the signature man-chick wail of original vocalist Steve Perry. Each one had been a bigger embarrassment than the last. In the immortal words of Pete Townshend, "It's the singer not the song that makes the music move along."

Man-chic wail is awesome. I'm putting that up there with banshee wail and along side battered seal cries.

Yeah and the only other singer they show is Jeff...talk about a real asshole, the writer not Jeff.

Forget that Jeff saved their collective bacon when Stevie A. went down...no...forget that Stevie A. was in Journey in the longest continuous number of years of any vocalist...including PERRY. Forget that will Arnel they have a platinum album.

I would rather have live Journey music than wait and wait and wait only to be disappointed when Steve Perry doesn't come back.

I was glad Steve Augeri put it on the line for 8 years.

I was glad Jeff rescued them.

I was pissed when they fucked Jeff.

I am very glad they are having success with Arnel...it means more live Journey music with my friends.

Shawn Amos can fuck off!

Disagree with the first one. Sammy was great in Van Halen, change can be good.

Nobody can replace Hutch.

Like Ian Astbury, thought they chose well with Ian......but glad to hear he is back with The Cult. :)

Queen w/Paul, I haven't heard enough to make an opinion.

Journey, well that's a no brainer.

Oh come on guys....don't take this shit too seriously...I mean, hell. Journey, Van Halen, etc...they've been bullseyes for these writers for years...decades, even.

Hell, I disagree with the VH thing to a certain extent. Anyone who watched the band even 0.02% as carefully as I did during the 1986-1989 can realize that the boys, Eddie, Al and Mikey...were quite enamored with Sammy...and Sammy brought success to the band that DLR was never able to bring (either in the past or currently).

Also, the guy makes it sound like it was the fault of the singers replacing lost singers....not the douchebuckets currently in the band or the singer that originally left....kinda off the mark.

However, I still maintain that the guy was taking a stab at humor...while a tad of truth helped glide the humorous phalus into the backs of some of that get a little too steamed at this.

I mean, hell....he does have a point about Journey...shit *did* get progressively worse after Steve left, er sorry, was booted...oh no wait, was forcefully kicked out thanks to a masterfully planned coup d'etat by successor singer Steve Augeri.

I've said that exact thing on this board at least twice. And I still believe it to be true.

What I disagree with here is that its not the singers that have "destroyed" the bands.
Who HIRED the singers? They certainly didn't walk in and take over of their own accord.

Whether or not hiring a new singer is a good idea in any given situation is not withstanding in this guy's arguments. The "happy bands they destroy? How did Augeri or Jeff or Arnel "destroy" anything? Schon, Cain and Perry collectively fucking destroyed it (no one start with me... it takes two or more sides to fuck up any relationship and we all know that), if you want to call it destroyed. It certainly hasn't been the same, or as good, since Perry but I don't know that "destroyed" is the right term.

I'm with Stu. This guy can fuck off because he's not only talking out of his ass, but he also stole my Townshend quote (but at least he spelled it right).

I should add to that that I think every element is important to a song, not just the singer, guitarist, etc. No 1 thing "makes" a song!!!

I don't agree with it either. You can take one of the best singers (Perry) and put him on an awful song, and it may very well be better than it would be otherwise, but you aren't going to get a great song out of it. Even the best singers have their share of poor songs. If the basic structure is flawed, it doesn't matter how good the decorations are.

From the other hand..Dylan can write a good song, but can't sing his way out of a paper bag. The song itself is solid, even if the execution is pitiful. That's why you can take a great singer and make a really good version out of a song that wasn't done well the first time.

Either way, the song comes first. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

Then I doubt you'd be into a lot of black metal or death metal... good singers in those genres are few and far between... some amazing fucking songs when you find a good band in those genres, though. As I said though... VERY few and far between in my opinion. There are bands though with horrid singers where the rest of the musicians more than make up for it.

I think the guy is spot on with his assessment of "Queen" with Paul Rodgers or whatever stupid fucking name they call themselves. When I heard Rodgers perform with Queen, my immediate thought was "Freddie must be turning over in his grave listening to this horror show"! As for each lead singer of Journey being worse than the last, I don't agree with that, at all. While Arnel is definitely not Perry, he is easily the best since Perry left. As for Van Halen...Sammy Hagar was THE MAN in that band! Love that dude in Van Halen! Roth was always a fucking clown and couldn't outsing Hagar on his best night!

So would I, and if the vocals are bad, I'm not going to like the band. That being said however, I can hear a good song with a pathetic singer, and realize that if you put someone who can sing on the song that you would have something good out of it.

Put a good singer on a bad song however, and you aren't going to make it any better. The premise is flawed, and there is nothing you can do about it. The other option at least has an upside.

David Lee Roth is a fuckin' narcissistic bozo ass clown. I like a few songs like Little Dreamer, I'll Wait and Aint Talkin' 'Bout Love, but Hagar brought some class and integrity to the band. Roth's fans, by and large, are fuckin' carnival workers...if they have a job at all!!!

There is some amount of rumor that Paul Rodgers was NOT the first choice, and that John Farnham turned down the gig previously, as he was retiring from full-scale touring. The fact that there is a version of We Will Rock You with Queen backing Farnham that was eventually released on Farnham's Greatest Hits album makes the possibility very real.

It would have been interesting to see what would develop from Queen + John Farnham. Farham definitely has the voice to sing Queen if he wants to, and some of his solo material isn't a million miles removed from the Queen sound. It probably would have been the only option for someone in the US to see him perform live. C'est la vie...
