Top Frontmen?

The Mickey Thomas discussion had me thinking about all the great frontmen through the Rock era. Here is a listing of some that come top of mind. Feel free to add your favorites.

Must have a powerful, unique rock voice and stage presence.

In no particular order:

Mick Jagger
Roger Daltry
Bruce Springsteen (not a huge fan, but deserves to be included)
Michael Hutchence - INXS
Bono
Steven Tyler
Jim Morrison
Robert Plant
David Lee Roth

I cannot put Steve Perry in this category. Great Singer, but not a great showman.

That's like not putting Babe Ruth on a greatest baseball player's list because he was fat. Steve Perry created more energy with his voice than any amount of mic flipping, fire spitting or running around ever could. His ability to project emotion through lyrics with acrobatic highs, and heart pounding, soul stirring lows remains unparalleled by anyone that has ever graced a microphone. So stick that in your bong and light it.  :P

Perry
Gramm
Mercury
Presley
Dio

As much as I'd like to put Perry and Martin too, JSS definitely has the better stage presence.

They're silently praying on bended knee in black hooded robes in front of a 6 foot tall nasal cavity. After they say the required 10 Mother, Father's all hell is gonna break loose.

I may not like all of their voices but that's a pretty good list, when it comes to stage presence. Hutch was pretty underrated when it came to big name frontmen, but gawd was he mesmerizing to watch perform. What a loss. :(

He's not talking vocals, he's talking about showmanship and stage presence in this question.

I'm gonna take an unpopular stand with the kiddies on the board and say that Robert Plant was the greatest frontman in a rock & roll band, period. (I didn't say greatest vocalist).
David Lee Roth
Steven Tyler
Freddie Mercury
Mick Jagger (even though I never liked more than about 4 songs by the Stones)

Those guys are all screamers, not the kind of vocalist that Perry was in Journey. Anybody that thinks Perry wasn't a great frontman better take another look at all the bootleg videos from the Escape era onward, if they didn't see him live. He had the crowds eating out of his hand.

Charisma has as much to do with being a great frontman as the vocals. Some singers have it and some are as bland as white rice.

I did. We just differ. I go to a concert to hear incredible vocals and really couldn't care less about stage presence, and you obviously go to see incredible stage presence and couldn't care less about incredible vocals. That's the equivalent of picking Barnum and Bailey over Phantom Of The Opera when it comes to the fine arts.

JSS has a GREAT stage presence! 8) but so did Perry and I'm not comparing one to the other.. they just have different styles.

Wrong. All three of my faves have great voices and can emote like nobody's business. But I guess you didn't understand the question, he wasn't asking who had the most incredible vocals, he was asking about showmanship/stage presence ya friggin boogernugget!

You can't be serious with this list! No disrespect to your personal taste but to make a statement like "great singer but not a great showman" about Perry ignores the most important part of a frontman, in my opinion. If you can't carry a fucking tune, then what's the point? You can keep that stiff Jagger and I'll take Perry all day long. Kudos to Jagger for making a 40 year career with a shit singing voice, but I still think the guy sucks and couldn't win a Karaoke contest. By the way, as big of a Van Halen fan as I've always been, I'll take Hagar all day long over Roth. Sure, Roth was a showman, but the problem is that he was all showman, and not much else. Hagar had a great stage presence but could actually sing!

That's true, I guess I just answered the question strictly on showmanship, without vocals factored in. Ya both great, but you're right .....2 different styles.
