Journey Superbowl Show Reviews

I did a Google News search to find some reviews of the Journey pre-game show, and here are a few that I found:

DailyGazette.com wrote:I just tuned into the pregame show, and there was some Journey-wannabe band playing "Don't Stop Believing'." It had to be a Journey cover band because Steve Perry wasn't the lead singer.

Oh, that was Journey? Who was that lead singer? He tried sounding like Perry, but wasn't even close.

This is why we need a Federal law to prevent the networks from having long pregame shows. Just one hour will do.

MTV.com wrote:Just in case you’re wondering, that was not Steve Perry singing “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” with Journey during the Super Bowl pregame, nor was it a Journey tribute band. It was, indeed, Journey, with new singer Arnel Pineda, who joined the band in 2007 after being spotted by them singing Journey songs on YouTube.

ManilaTimes.net wrote:
Add a touchdown to the resumé of Filipino international rock star Arnel Pineda.

No, he played neither for the Pittsburgh Steelers nor the Arizona Cardinals that clashed for the Super Bowl 43 of the National Football League in Tampa, Florida, on Sunday. The Steelers won, 27-23.

Rather, he sang for thousands of fans of the two teams in a pre-game event.

Pineda, the lead singer of the American rock band Journey, was in great company. Bruce Springsteen was the halftime main attraction, while Faith Hill kicked off the event by singing God Bless America, followed by Jennifer Hudson emotional rendition of the US national anthem.

But the Filipino was one of the few non-Americans to ever have sung during the Super Bowl, where a 30-second commercial fetched for a record $3 million.

Pineda’s take on Don’t Stop Believin’, however, got negative reviews from a number of bloggers visiting his website. According to one of the critics, it was the worst performance he has seen from the singer.

“I’m cringing on my seat while watching it,” said the blogger who posted under the name Pedro. “If I was a Pineda detractor, I would be happy with that performance, but I’m not one.”

Other bloggers likened the Filipino’s performance to that of someone who had a bad case of colds.

Still other bloggers, though, quickly came to Pineda’s defense by saying that the performance was OK.

The reviews seem to be mixed. Feel free to post any that you can find.

LOL... I guess it's mixed among Arnel's hardcore fans. But you're right, it sucked. It was probably the first time a lot of people ever heard Arnel too, so it wasn't a good day for Journey.

I'm jumping in right now. First of all, those are just bloggers, who-hoo. And that Pedro on Arnel's site is a troll that was kicked off of here by Andrew.
This means nothing. I don't need to waste my day looking for random blogs. I wasted my day on here.

I pollled the ten at my house Super Bowl day (casual fans) and found eight more that saw the performance (just casual Journey fans). All said it was a good performance. No one said it was bad or that it was great.

The title of the MTV article is: "Journey — Without Steve Perry — Rock Super Bowl Pregame With ‘Don't Stop Believing". Sounds positive to me 8)

Jana, by jumping in now, are you trying to prevent the spread of the bad performance? It's out there Jana, and if a sample of people including writers feel the performance was shit, then it's a good chance the rest of the world agrees, sans the PI. Even the people here who are grading this performance as an D or F aren't "haters." You believe you are wasting your time reading poor reviews of Pineda and Journey? If so, I suggest you either come correct and see the shit as it smells, or just forward your mail to Arnelpineda.com, where it never rains and is always sunny.

I googled for "journey superbowl pineda -filipinasoul -pacquiao -ning.com -youtube -.ph -pinoy" (the minus signs should hopefully not show any Pinoy written blogs). Here's the first hit on google:

http://www.associatedcontent.com/articl ... rue&cat=33

snippets from that article:

On February 1, 2009 the Super Bowl XLIII Pregame offered more than just added information on Bruce Springsteen's upcoming half-time performance. After hours of famous faces sharing stories surrounding heartfelt memories, Journey came on stage with the entire world listening to one of Journey's best 1980's songs " Don't Stop Believing" . Arnel Pineda's voice began to stun listeners that paid attention as others simply deflected this song as a past experience. The first :45 seconds, Arnel's cover of Journey in Journey had a mixture of Steve Perry and Rod Stewart's vocal style. Once Arnel reached the mid-point, his vocals matched that of Steve Perry's for the most part. With Arnel Pineda's love for music, unmeasured energy when completing, and his appealing style, the Super Bowl XLIII Pregame witnesses are getting quite a treat.

Many pushed for Journey to make it into the Super Bowl XLIII through PetitionOnline.com. Undated, this petition requested that the NFL consider Journey as a Super Bowl XLIII performer. Journey with Arnel Pineda is accepted on many grounds by Journey lovers, for they are willing to petition for a show. To catch a Journey concert visit JourneyMusic.com.

The rating given for Arnel Pineda's performance results in four-stars out of five. He did well in his appearance and presentation, along with hitting most of the octaves that compare to Steve Perry's, but he came into the song reflecting the Perry/Stewart mix, a slight obstacle contributing to the four-star rating.

Knellsky: I WAS FEELING QUITE BAD TODAY
AFTER SEEING MY OWN PERFORMANCE WITH JOURNEY

Arnel expressed his disappointment over his performance. That's the only review I need to see really. How many artists would come out and say that?

I don't know why we are even debating it.

Dean, actually I don't feel that MOST people that grade it a D or F are haters, but some are. I jumped in quickly b/c I saw that Pedro guy's comment who has ulterior motives and is a troll and that's why Andrew kicked him off according to Rip. I only highlighted that statement and wanted to address him quickly. Just as much as I don't understand the people who thought it sucked, I don't get the people who thought it was awesome on any of these fan sites. But everyone has their opinion.

This is good enough for me. That takes a lot of character to do that. However, his followers, some here, apparently haven't received the memo yet. They are saying it was the best performance ever. Which is it?

It was far from the best ever, but I didn't see it as terrible or anything. AP shouldn't feel that bad, Journey always has problems for some reason when they play live on the air. Neal muffed the pull-off during his lead too.

Arnel seemed more concerned with the thought that he let Neal and Jon down after they got him the gig. He seems to feel that this one appearance was a big deal to them. I don't think what he did on Sunday really mattered at all. Even if he sang the song perfectly, It's not going to make much of a difference with how people perceive Journey. Many people didn't even tune in until Faith Hill started to sing. The majority of viewers came during the fourth quarter (not halftime).

Arnel just needs to gear up for his shows in Japan. three shows in a row there in cold weather and two days later a show in Manila, I hope he doesn't get sick right before his home debut, that would be sad even thought the fans there probably wouldn't care.

The sickness thing is what is going to curtail his career with the band. He's over 40 and this new part of his life will take a toll on him I feel.

Haters, as in people who hated Arnel's style, voice and fronting the band. There were LOTS of them when he first started. They took the first show, in Chile, and then decided Journey was ruined. Then he worked on his diction, and did a summer tour where he sounded great the 3 times I saw him, and most people who saw him on tour agreed. The SB performance though, has even the people who are okay with Arnel knowing it wasn't the best and there were problems.

But then those who hated him in the band want to come in and call doomsday on the whole band again, based on one bad performance after so many good ones. I believe that is what I earlier, and Jana now were referring to when we said "haters." Or at least I was. You are a semi-hater :P   j/k I know that you are okay with Arnel, because I know you were impressed with him in Cleveland. I know you chalk it up to one performance that was not good. But not everyone feels like you. Just like I am not an Arnel fan in "happyland". I am just okay with him fronting the band :P

For me it was less the 'cold'... it was the return of the accent. The lack of correct pronunciation was one of the reasons why I didn't approve of the choice to have Arnel sing for Journey early on. Summer came and went, and he reportedly improved. Cool. Now, with a month plus back home, the annunciation issue is back. If I go back east and spend any longer than a month, I start talking "Philly" without even noticing. "Yo...let's go to thuh mawl". I felt like all the work he did over the summer went to the toilet. I was really disappointed.

Arnel should have been back in the US for two weeks prior to this event, training with the band. His health would have not been an issue, as the diction. I can't just roll this into "the cold" excuse. C'mon. I applaud him apologizing, but the cold excuse... enough. He's 40, 41? He needs to do what he needs to do... this gig comes once in a lifetime, and he's fuckin' it up. That and working with someone on stage presence would help too... sorry... I'm still not sold on this guy at all. I can't tell you how frustrating that is, to love the music but hate hearing it now. argh.

I don't get why everyone's focusing so much on just Arnel's flubbing. Sucks he's the face of the band and unfortunately must bear the brunt, but let's give even dues here. :P

Just as Madsplash has his critics, I can’t stand your writing style – at all. Going by the universal definition of a “loon,” I guess I fall in that category – but I’m far from being “retarded.” And ….you can never resist a backhand snip at SP, could you? “Arnel has the advantage of being a decent guy” … hmmm, compared to …

Your constant riding on SP fans (and the man himself) is getting old. Change your style, Gideon, please.

Arnel expressed his disappointment over his performance. That's the only review I need to see really. How many artists would come out and say that?

I don't know why we are even debating it.

Ain't much but noticed this on that same transcript:

An unregistered (his name's initial letter was in lowercase) plokker, probably some Pinoy, chimed in...

concernlangpo: ok naman ung kanta mo sabit nga lang ng konti
Knellsky: THANK YOU FOR BEING HONEST
I LIKE THAT, ITS TRUE, THERE WAS A LOT OF MISTAKES
BUT WASN’T TOTALLY AWARE…
COZ I WAS NOT TOTALLY HEARING MYSELF UP ON STAGE THAT DAY
ALL I HEAR IS MY OWN VOICE AND A LITTLE OF WHAT THE BIG BOYS DO

(My translation...justconcerned: something was amiss but you did just fine overall)
