He doesn't sound Perryish in the 80s stuff. I have "The VU - Phoenix Rising", pretty good album.

He really only sounded like Perry on the first Storm album imo.

Wow.. First time I have ever heard or seen Chalfant sing. I have to say that what I really liked about him is that he sings the songs without making changes. What I mean is that once you have heard the songs the way Perry first sang them, those songs are forever etched into your mind and soul. When someone new sings them, I think we expect them to sound the same as what we remember, EVEN IF someone different is singing the song. There is this blueprint of what we expect the song to sound like, and I think Chalfant hits the mark when covering the songs as Perry did them. Even though his voice is different, it is appealing nonetheless to hear the song when Chalfant sings them. I cannot say the same for Arnel. I think Arnel sings the songs differently than the original Perry versions so much so, that the song does not fit and actually feels like Arnel is destroying the song. It feels like nails on a chalkboard to hear Arnel sing them, it just doesn't fit into my memory banks... Not to say that Arnel isn't a powerful singer that does a pretty damn good job, but I just don't care for what he does to the songs, it doesn't feel right to me when I hear him sing Journey songs that were made by Perry's voice. Just my opinion...........

Never really thought of Kevin as trying to sound like Perry, like HUGO, or some of the other guys. Kevin sounds good on just about anything, but never really cared for the 707 Megaforce cd.

As Herbie mentioned about Kevin's Journey covers, "[Kevin] really intimated to me that this was done in the original key. Yeah, but barely, you know if you're a half step down from a major to a minor or whatever, you know, it's a significant change in the tonality and everything else."

Sadly, I'm afraid the window of opportunity for Kevin & Journey has since passed.
Still, I have no doubt he was the right man for the task.

Or maybe even back in his heyday. Soto is a much better singer than DLR ever was. I think Chalfant had such a hard on for being Journeys lead singer that he didn't give himself a chance to do anything else.

I think they just ended up in an overcrowded career field. There were tons of hair bands and melodic rock types, it was really who you know and being lucky. I pulled out an old import cd last night and was impressed by TNT. Where are they now though? Great pipes but just another group or singer that missed the window of opportunty in the 80's to make a household name for themselves.

It's an interesting thought and the world's not exactly fair to those with talents like Chalfant's or Soto's. People with a lot less have made it lightyears farther in the music business than those two and it's disheartening.

But I think they're content with where they are.

Hey SPFIO, since you're haven't had a lot of KC exposure, here's a couple you like even better.

The first is The Storm (Chalfant, Rolie, Steve Smith, Ross Valory and Josh Ramos). It came out in the early 90s and made a lot of radio listeners think it was a new Journey tune.

I have indeed. All things considered Kevin Chalfant at any given time had the stage experience and singing chops to make a great fit for the band. Given every available option I would put him ahead of anyone other than Perry himself.

Although not a Journey song I would rate his live version of Survivor's 'I Can't Hold Back' as better than the studio original.

It was written for the alternative soundtrack to the wonderful 1986 movie No Retreat No Surrender and was composed by Frank Harris.

It's a great version. His voice melds with Survivor material 'cause its both smooth and has a little rough edginess that Jamison's didn't.
