So far it has hit Mexico City, California, Texas, NYC, and Kansas. There are also suspected cases in Minesotta, Canada and now New Zeland. At last count, 81 people in Mexico have died and 1300 are ill. There is NO cure and the CDC says it is too late to contain tthe outbreak. The WHO says this thing has the potential to be a major pandemic. Here in the states those that are sick seem to be ill, but recovering. But I wonder for how long? This virus is actually a combination of bird, swine and human influenzas.
My question is since this has been coming in from Mexico why aren't we closing our borders? Granted this thing is airborne, but why allow the influx of more sick individuals? And where is Obama? Why isn't he saying anything?

Yeah, the Japanese are all freaking out right now because of it. They are eyeing my wife and I (even though she's Japanese) cause we just got into the country a few weeks ago and "may be carrying it". I never eat pork anyways, but guess you can still catch the shit if you breath the same air as the pigs, not sure about that though.

It is airborne. According to the CDC you can't catch it from eating pork products.

The media in San Francisco was mentioning the consumption of pork products and so after reading that, I figured you can catch it by eating it too. I didn't think so, but then again, you can catch mad cow sickness from consuming a cow affected by mad cow disease. That's what happened to Rosie Odonnell.

Yeah...why stop
these fine citizens from freely entering our country.
• In Los Angeles, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide (which total 1,200 to 1,500) target illegal aliens. Up to two-thirds of all fugitive felony warrants (17,000) are for illegal aliens.
• A confidential California Department of Justice study reported in 1995 that 60 percent of the 20,000-strong 18th Street Gang in southern California is illegal; police officers say the proportion is actually much greater. The bloody gang collaborates with the Mexican Mafia, the dominant force in California prisons, on complex drug-distribution schemes, extortion, and drive-by assassinations, and commits an assault or robbery every day in L.A. County. The gang has grown dramatically over the last two decades by recruiting recently arrived youngsters, most of them illegal, from Central America and Mexico.
• The leadership of the Columbia Lil’ Cycos gang, which uses murder and racketeering to control the drug market around L.A.’s MacArthur Park, was about 60 percent illegal in 2002, says former assistant U.S. attorney Luis Li. Francisco Martinez, a Mexican Mafia member and an illegal alien, controlled the gang from prison, while serving time for felonious reentry following deportation.
• Twelve Americans are murdered every day by illegal aliens.

I would have to guess the many deaths in Mexico are due to the poor conditions in many areas and poor healthcare. Only a guess though. There is a flu outbreak like this every couple of years it seems, and the media always jumps on it, and then it dies off and you hear nothing. I mean I know someday a flu may become pandemic, but they don't even wait until it comes near that before they have average citizens in of the world in a panic it seems. I'd say it's a good sign that this flu responds to medicines to weaken it.

Agreed. I see nothing wrong with closing the borders as a precautionary measure. At least until we can get this mess sorted out.

This thread is making me want to break my diet and eat some bacon! I'm living on oatmeal these days.
What the hell does "The WHO" have to do with it? "Can't explain?!"
Must mean the World Health Org. Would've been funnier if Townsend owns a pig farm and considered himself an expert ala Bono on world peace.
As for the texMex talk, well, like the Indians, Mexicans were in CalEEfornia way before anglos so one way or another they'll get it back. If we don't like it, there's always Idaho! Ruby Ridge that is.

Sorry, no intention to make light of this (I'm sure at least 30% of our office staff have vacationed in Mexico the last couple of months), but I saw this comment on a Canadian news forum and couldn't help but chuckle

:
"My daughter woke up this morning with her hair in pig tails. Is this a symptom? Who do I report this to?"

We should have invaded that damn country decades ago and had it all cleaned-up by now. We'd learn a little spanish and get some great food. They'd learn how to be civilized Americans.
Wth, let's take Cuba too.
later~

Thank goodness -- I just finished eating my leftover carnitas from a very authentico Mexican restaurant. Hope they get a handle on this soon.

Swine flu ain't gonna be no stinkin' pandemic. Media hype. As usual.
But go buy your novelty piggy snouts anyway, and wear them around town so that when people ask why you have one on, you can scream "I HAVE THE FUCKING SWINE FLUUUUUU!!!"

I just saw on CNN.com that Ohio is now reporting cases. That brings the count to five states. Six if you count Minnesotta. On MSNBC they were reporting cases there as well.

You mean
secede.
And didn't you hear Chuck Norris wants to run for President of Texas, should that happen? Not a joke, either.

oh my, what a big cock you have in your av!
from what i've read, these flu outbreaks start from the horrible cramped conditions in which farm animals are raised. the virus mutates, then jumps to the humans who work in close proximity to the animals in the factory farms. if we ate less meat & improved the conditions of the animals on the farms, outbreaks like this are much less likely to happen. unfortunately, i don't see this happening in the near future.
