They exercised extremely poor judgment when they pulled this off. No notification to the City of New York, at all.

I just saw this literally 5 minutes ago on Good Morning America. Omg, how stupid!! Fly a big ass plane over the Statue of Liberty and Downtown NYC and don't tell anyone you're gonna do it? Good lord.

classic arrogance of leadership already in play, here. Can you imagine the media if Bush would have allowed this???? Holy ****.

Yeah this was pretty dumb. On the one hand I can see why they wouldn't want to advertise to the general public where AF1 would be and when, for obvious reasons with all the nutjobs in this world, but I also see where a jumbo jet being followed by a fighter jet would freak people out, esp. over NYC. And esp. for people who have no clue fighters fly with AF1.

I love fighter jets though.

And oh yeah, that is SO true that if this had happened under Bush it would be just such a terrible thing, but happening under Obama, yeah I doubt it'll get nearly the criticism.

Thank you...the exact thought I had - mindless arrogance by a self-absorbed government in place now. MORONS.

And of course it took a full day for the media to, RELUCTANTLY, go after Obama and Co. on this.

The people of NYC and surrounding areas (of which I am a part) are still raw over 9/11.

Obamas next photo op will be having a B12 Bomber do a low flyover over Hiroshima

Right... but they SHOULD have told the mayor/city officials, and they COULD have made a media announcement to let the people of NYC know that there would be a jet present for photographic reasons, or whatever they were doing, and yes it has permission to be there and the government is a aware, and left out the part that it would be Air Force One. But after something like 9/11, anyone in NYC (or any city for that matter) is certainly going to be alarmed as all hell by a big ass jet swooping into an area that big ass jets do not normally swoop!

I mean, SHEESH. How hard is it? Send a memo... "FYI: big ass jet gonna be buzzin' around Lady Liberty... don't worry, we're cool like a pool, baby, it's supposed to be there..."

I can see it both ways, but if you have a big jet buzzing Chicago, it wouldn't be an issue. I know it may be somewhat callous to say this....but when you have the American people living in fear of a plane, the terrorists have already won.

Not necessarily. Yes, you will see jets buzzing over neighborhoods bordering O'Hare and Midway airports and think nothing of it...

But if there was one buzzing over Downtown Chicago, outlying burbs or the main part of the city at a low altitude, you better believe people are going to be freaked out. Especially if there's a fighter following it.  We all know that if a plane is flying that low, and we're not within 2 miles of O'Hare, something ain't right. I would think that would go for any city.

No I agree, it was plain stupid and yes the mayor and city officials should definitely have been told, and yes it should have been told to the public there would be a plane (leaving out it would be AF1) with a fighter present and it's totally for photographic purposes and the government is fully aware and it's ok. It was shitty all around that it wasn't done that way, I totally agree.

Oh and the paranoia thing with military planes I think is always there if they are present someplace they normally aren't. That happened here a few years ago, a military cargo plane was buzzing around and people were calling 911 and freaking out. I'm an Air Force brat, father was a crew chief, and those planes over my head all through my entire childhood were normal to me, lol. B-52's, F-4's, F-15's, F-16's, etc. I found it amusing people got all freaked out over a cargo plane, but I guess not being used to them they had a reason.

Former CIA are saying that Air Force One may have been the target of a terrorist attack, and that's why the plane was spirited out of Washington.

What's Obama not telling us? So much for transparency, I guess.

Try working in a high rise building, blocks away from the Twin Towers, seeing smoke/other debris coming from the opposite side of one of the towers (we couldn't see what had actually happened), while another jet swings past your building, makes a U-turn back past your building, and then smashes at the tower closest to you, then tell me how you would react when you see a low flying jet with a fighter on its tail! When you experience it once, you realize that these things don't only happen in the movies.

I was never more scared in my life than on that day, September 11, 2001. I saw it, the fall of the 1st tower, and Downtown Manhattan engulfed in smoke, dust, and debris first hand. :(

I also saw and smelled the smoldering ruins of these towers every day at work... For a month.

This has to be one of the stupidest things I have ever seen!! And it is true, if Bush would have done this they would be calling for his head!!

They reported on Fox News this morning that NYPD was notified of the flight but someone instructed it to not be made public!!

Not to mention I think it costs about $40,00/hr to fly Air Force one. For a photo op??? Talk about a waste of tax payer money!!!

FAA Memo: Feds Knew NYC Flyover Would Cause Panic

Threatened Federal Sanctions Against NYPD, Secret Service, FBI & Mayor's Office If Secret Ever Got Out

Furious Obama Apologizes: "It Will Never Happen Again"

A furious President Barack Obama ordered an internal review of Monday's low-flying photo op over the Statue of Liberty.

CBS 2 HD has discovered the feds will have plenty to question.

Federal officials knew that sending two fighter jets and Air Force One to buzz ground zero and Lady Liberty might set off nightmarish fears of a 9/11 replay, but they still ordered the photo-op kept secret from the public.

In a memo obtained by CBS 2 HD the Federal Aviation Administration's James Johnston said the agency was aware of "the possibility of public concern regarding DOD (Department of Defense) aircraft flying at low altitudes" in an around New York City. But they demanded total secrecy from the NYPD, the Secret Service, the FBI and even the mayor's office and threatened federal sanctions if the secret got out.

"To say that it should not be made public knowing that it might scare people it's just confounding," Sen. Charles Schumer said. "It's what gives Washington and government a bad name. It's sheer stupidity."

The flyover -- apparently ordered by the White House Office of Military Affairs so it would have souvenir photos of Air Force One with the Statue of Liberty in the background -- had President Obama seeing red. He ordered a probe and apologized.

"It was a mistake. It will never happen again," President Obama said.

The NYPD was so upset about the demand for secrecy that Police Commissioner Ray Kelly vowed never to follow such a directive again and he accused the feds of inciting fears of a 9/11 replay.

"Did it show any insensitivity to the psychic wounds New York City has after 9/11? Absolutely. No questions about it. It was quite insensitive."

The cost of the frivolous flight was about $60,000 an hour and that was just for Air Force One. That doesn't include the cost of the two F-16s that came along.

The mayoral aide who neglected to tell Mayor Michael Bloomberg about it was reprimanded.

i dunno if i buy that obama didn't know. either way it looks bad cause if he didn't really know... he should have. i'm sure this was planned & we're to really believe that our prez had no idea? he's making bush look brighter by the minute eh? }:C)
