A Die Hards Only Tour?

I had a similar idea recently that I thought about posting, but I might as well talk about it with someone who's interested. My idea wasn't so much of an acoustic show (although a few songs would be cool), but a small(er) venue, smaller scale show/equipment tour strictly for ACTUAL fans to be able to go and support the band so they can play new stuff, and old stuff/B-sides and not have to worry about people leaving for the bathroom or to get a beer. I know the problem would be limiting the dirty dozen fans versus the die hard fans, but I think it could be done with some type of system. Any thoughts?

Maybe my ballad is too extreme.

But I was imagining a similar thing to what you are proposing.

You'd need a disclaimer stating that this show will not contain:
Open Arms
When you love a woman
Don't stop Believin
Separate Ways
Lights
Faithfully
Any you want it
Be good to yourself
Loving touchin squeezin
Ask the lonely
only the young
Wheel in the sky
Is that twelve...yep. Dead dirty dozen. Sell tickets to a 5000 capacity venue and only 1000 show up and we'll have plenty of room to stretch out.
Hell, they could probably deliver your beer right to your seat that way.

They can still play those if they want to, but it's up to them.

I don't know if a full tour would be feasible but a couple select shows could be awesome. Neal toyed with this idea a few years ago going out as JRNY.

Steely Dan is doing 4 nights at the Gibson Amphitheater. Three Album nights and an internet request night. The place holds 6,000, so 24k tickets total and none of the shows are conventional GH sets.
It can be done but you have to play the correct size venues, obviously.

I mentioned this a few months back, but since Journey has so many albums out there I would love to see them do a series by decade. One night each for 70's, 80's and 90's. There are some great venues where this would work.

I think it would be a great idea. I usually love B sides anyway with my bands. Let them play whatever moves them with no pressure. And even doing it at one smaller venue for so many nights in a row would be great. They would be relaxed and just having a good time. I'll be there.

Wasn't Generations meant to be a tour for the die hards? Didn't really turn out that way however.

I like this this idea RocknRoll. I think most of us agree that it just has to be within the right type of venue. Would it be easier if they did these types of shows (playing 3-4 nights in a venue) to play at one venue, take a break traveling to the next venue (just so the dates would be spread out, but they could still play across the country).

It was, but it wasn't approached in the right way. Like I said earlier, if there's a way to specifically market it or limit it to actual fans letting them know what type of show it will be (B-sides, rarities, new stuff, and a few hits in a scaled down format).

It's a GREAT idea, but they don't have the balls to do it. Hell, I would be the first in line to see one of these shows. They have the musicianship necessary, but would they actually go to work learning the old stuff again? Would Pinny be able to pull off Infinity notes? Could Friga pull off the Hammond B-3 like GR, and make it sound right? Could Valory learn a single song without having the ear monitor playing it for him? We know Neal and Deen could do this no problem.
This is what real bands are made of do. Screw the casual fan. Is it the casual fan who got you this far? No, it's the die hards like all of you folks here. They are the ones who bought every album on the Tuesday it came out. Like Gunbot said, Steely Dan is doing album nights, but in all fairness, SD doesn't have that wide "shallower" audience of a Journey. No disrespect at all here, it's just that SD have a smaller more minute hardcore fan following. Now Bruce is doing Chicago and it's an album night. Never done it before so we'll see how the press and fans like it. His audience is much more akin to Journey's than a Steely Dan. But yeah, Hell yeah, I would pay to see an album night of journey, as long as it wasn't a Generations or some shit effort like that. And of course you can play some other hits on top of that as each album is only 10-12 songs in length.

you were supposed to have gotten an autographed copy, sorry. if i come across one while cleaning/organizing i'll put it aside for you.
as for this type of show.... i don't see them doing it, not since they have a brand new fan base courtesy of arnel. don't see much money in it either since they would not able to play larger venues if catering only to the 'hardcore' fan. as far as i'm concerned they are done catering to fans, if they ever did

i still can't get beyond the fraudulent actions.

Well maybe Perry could sing....and they could find another bass player(one that does not look like he is ready to croak)...then yes sign me up...would love to go...if not I think I am all set!!

I wouldn't even expect them to do a tour, b/c too many fans want the hits. But like maybe at the end of the tour taking off a few weeks and then playing for a month this type of show like three to four days in a row at a smaller type venue in California and then another area in California or another state not too far away that would draw the crowds, some type of logistics like that for a limited run. And really get the fans involved by submitting their requests ahead of time to the Journey site and would take into account when deciding their setlists.
