Steve Perry - For the Love of Strange Medicine Tour

Postby HubieG » Mon Feb 13, 2017 9:56 am

Hi, all,

I've done some work with Ron South on his excellent Journey tour archive (http://ronsouth.blogspot.com/p/tours.html) and am just now digging into the Steve Perry 1994/1995 solo tour.

As I research the trek, I am learning that more than a few dates were either postponed, often times more than once, or cancelled. At least a few were postponed and then cancelled, particularly those at the end of the tour.

At any rate, I am slowly but surely sifting through the news archives online and have found a good bit of info, but wanted to see if anyone here might add their 2c if they happened to catch one or more of the Strange Medicine shows, particularly along the lines of cancellations, postponements and/or opening act info.

The shows I have so far, some of which aren't yet verified with reviews and, thus, may be wrong, are below. Thanks, in advance, for your help!

I was at the Cleveland show on 10/29/94. There weren't any issues with that show that I recall.
I didn't even remember there being an opening act. Though I don't doubt that there was. The name Sass Jordan does sound slightly familiar.

According to the Mar 19, 1995, issue of the Clute, TX (Houston metro area), newspaper, Perry was slated to play Jones Hall in Houston three days later, on Mar 22. This would fit in with the Dallas date on the 24th, although Puerto Rico would work, too. Of course, all is moot, as the tour was cancelled at some point after the last verified show, which was the Mar 13 concert in Irvine. I don't have access to Puerto Rico papers, so if anyone has proof of the scheduled Mar 22 PR date, I'd certainly appreciate seeing that.

Yep; the postponement of the original, Feb 22 Opry, date was called out in the next days' (Feb 23) Jackson (MS) Clarion Ledger. And the cancellation of the rescheduled, Apr 03, date was mentioned in the Apr 01 issue of the Nashville Tennessean.

Thanks for the confirmation of the first two shows in the Strange Medicine tour listing!

Excellent! I'll mark the Cleveland show as confirmed. It was advertised in the Oct 28 Akron Beacon Journal, and is surrounded by confirmed shows, so I feel pretty good about that one.

The Jan 27 Buffalo show was confirmed in the Jan 30 edition of the Buffalo News. I wasn't able to look at the entire article, but when I searched on "Steve Perry" AND "Jesse Cook," nothing came up.

Then, again, when I search on "Steve Perry" AND "Sass Jordan," I get no Buffalo News results, either; leading me to believe that perhaps the review in the Jan 30 News didn't mention the opening act.

I've reached out to Jesse to see if, perhaps, he did open the Buffalo and/or other shows in '95 for Steve.

Stay tuned, and thanks, again, for your help!...

Actually, I found a story on these boards about a fan who attended the show. Anfiteatro Tito Puente is listed as the venue and Mar 22 as the date at Setlist.fm, which is usually pretty accurate. I'm going to change the Houston show to PR for now.

If anyone else knows who opened (if anyone), or other details of the PR, or any other shows, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks for all the input so far. Very helpful!

The date, indeed. His Mar 17-18 Reno shows were cancelled, according to the Mar 18 Reno Gazette Journal, as were his Mar 24 Dallas (per the Mar 21 Dallas Morning News) and Mar 26 New Orleans (per that day's Times Picayune) concerts, putting the PR show between a spate of cancelled concerts.

I've seen Feb 28 tossed around in some quarters, but the Birmingham News from that day mentions the Boutwell show on Feb 28 was postponed to Apr 12. Dates either side of the B'ham show were moved, too, so I don't think he cancelled Birmingham to play Puerto Rico.

The mystery deepens...

Was at the Little Rock show. (I thought it was in Feb, like the 21st maybe.) Opening band was 'Bone Pony'.
Local radio reported that SP got sick after this show and had to postpone/cancel the remainder of the tour.

Thanks for the opening act info. From that, I was able to find the concert advert in the Sunday, Mar 05, 1995, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette which noted that:

"Steve Perry, lead singer for the now-defunct pop group Journey, will bring his solo show to Robinson Center Music Hall on Tuesday (Mar 07). Bonepony will open the show at 7:30 PM."

I didn't get any hits in the Gazette for Jan-Feb, 1995, so I'd say the March date is pretty secure.

His Mar 13 show at UC Irvine was reviewed in the Mar 15, 1995, issue of the Santa Ana OC Register, but I've not been able to verify any shows after that one, which is probably when he cancelled the rest of the tour. The Mar 22 Puerto Rico date is in question, but, if it is correct, then there may have been other dates he kept between UC Irvine and PR.

It's getting very interesting, and I surely appreciate all the help I've received thus far.

I love a good mystery!

He was scheduled to play in Charleston, SC in February. It was postponed until April - and then canceled. I was all set to go to the Charlotte NC one, and then spend the next day driving to Charleston to see him down there. It was just a couple of days before the dates when these were canceled, as I recall. Very sad - but thankfully I saw him in November 94 in St. Petersburg. Saved this...

Yes I can confirm you the venue is correct and there was not an opening band. The date is fuzzy but I'm sure I was there :)

I was blown away by that voice!!

Excellent info! I shall add the Charleston information. The Mar 31 Charlotte cancellation was announced in that day's Greenville (SC) News.

I went to the warm up show that was just before the tour. I don;t have the date. Was in a warehouse in LA.

I also went to one of the LA shows. SO good!
