Why a Steve Perry/Journey reunion is unlikely

Journey is being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame on April 7th and the big question is...will Steve Perry show up and perform? Steve has revealed that he never really felt like a part of the band. A VH1 "Behind The Music" special left him feeling hurt...plus his girlfriend died from cancer and he himself battled cancer. Guitarist Neal Schon says he has tried to reach out to Steve about reuniting at the upcoming induction ceremony but Steve won't reply. Read more about Steve and a possible new solo album HERE.

They should play 30 seconds of the Jeopardy TV Game Show Theme Song at the Hall of Fame Concert and then after the music stops we will see if Steve Perry walks out on stage to perform. :D

Not the first time Perry bailed on a ceremony. At Herbie roast, they had Chalfant fill in. They never should have looked back.

Was listening to the first half of TBF today. So good. Glad they looked back enough for that.

Yea, but at what cost? Was it worth a ten or twelve year wait?

To me it was worth it in that it put Ross and Smitty back. Smith is a giant on this album on some of the songs. A GIANT!

But you know, I'm not one to really get into what makes a band or person wait. Music is important. Journey is important. But it isn't THAT important. If something caused them to be apart for all that time, whatever. I'd like it if Steve never left or kicked out or whatever, but It doesn't change my life in any way.

I totally agree. Those first 6 songs are epic. I just wish that album wasn't so long. Too many songs...

And Message of Love. Those last few moments of that song are smith on fire.

I agree as well. I was just listening to TBF the other day and couldn't believe how many great songs were on there. Some deep meaning tunes. I'd have to say one of my favorites is the title track, kinda got me through some tough times.

Well gee, if Mr Perry is not going to be attending than I guess I should not go! Darn! Darn! Darn! I mean I would love to see Journey on stage but I was going to go specifically to see Mr Perry sang with the members of the band! We were getting tickets, nursing staff in case one of us fainted, and all other special effects…well, I guess it wasn't meant to be but it would have been grand!

Gave Trial by Fire a run through today, mostly because of this thread.

Yes, 16 songs seems a bit much, but it's a very spiritual Journey on this album. Easy to Fall, Trial by Fire, Colours of the Spirit, One More....you can see what being apart those 12 years did for the band members. One of their best, I'd say. Neal plays like the genius that he is, Steve's voice is still awesome, and Jonathan and Smitty are at their best. Even Ross 's guitar stands out in some songs more than usual.

I for one am glad they got back together to give us such a great album.

many great songs on TBF, Amazed they could score a grammy nominated top 10 hit in the era of grunge.

But yes, it was too long, some of those extra songs should have been b sides. Never cared for Dont be down, and the magic moments song. Get rid of those 2 and add I can see it in your eyes and you have an album to rival Frontiers.

Still She Cries is a masterpiece.

It seemed odd to me that the Grammy nomination was for WYLAW. Not their best song, by far. I know that timing of when the song is released vs. other songs in the market is a huge factor. Also, during the Escape/Frontiers/ROR era, Journey was commercially successful but the critics hated them, so that played into it as well.

Why would he want to sing at a roast and honor a man who absolutely hates his guts??? :?

If they had continued on with Chalfant, it would have also had Ross and Steve Smith. Steve Perry did not reunite the band, it was already together..along with Gregg Rolie AND Jonathan Cain.

But, it doesn't matter...it is what is today.

The original post is crap. IMO, it's a given that Perry will perform with the band in some way. I will be pretty shocked if he doesn't. Since the people who run this hate bands like Journey so much there isn't a point in inducting them if they don't bring in an audience for the ceremony...there was an article about this a couple years ago that was posted here.

Because the band was invited and was going to perform. But I forgot, it's always about Steve isn't it?

I love most of TBF and I am glad it got made, but wow, this Chalfant/Rolie/Schon song would have sounded great.
I wonder after the debacle that happened to Chalfant pre TBF, similar that happened to Jeremy was not asked or did not want to come back after TBF.

This song is by far my favorite Two Fires Song. One day I will have to pick up the whole CD. (But always thought most of he first was very average except for the first and last song.

I love both Storm cds. Not sure why they didn't go with Chalfant in 1998. Some say he's a bit of a primadonna. Who knows.

If you read what Schon said at the time, it was a bit of a "Been there, done that..." kinda attitude. It sounded to me like they wanted a brand new start and that included the pre-TBF reunion.

And, virtually every other past member of the band was there...in fact, they started with a couple pre-Perry songs prior to Chalfant joining the band on stage.

Perry was recording FTLOSM at the time and couldn't, or didn't way to, take the time away from recording. The same type of excuse was made for not adding vocals to the "new" instrumental songs in the box set.

Chalfant has said many times that he would be there for Journey if/when they ever need him. I do not get the idea that there are any bad feelings between him and the band at all....very much the opposite.

TBF is my favourite Journey album. Too long, but fantastic. Leave off Don't Be Down and Is It Just The Rain. I used to say leave off When I Think Of You but I love the meaning of the song now once I learnt what it was about.

Still She Cries is indeed a masterpiece.

I'll stick with they should have replaced Perry in '84 with Mickey Thomas.

Trial By Fire should have been the following:
1. Message of Love
2. One More
3. When You Love A Woman
4. If He Should Break Your Heart
5. Forever in Blue
6. Still She Cries
7. Colors of the Spirit
8. When I Think of You
9. Can't Tame The Lion
10. Trial By Fire
11. Baby I'm a Leavin' You
12. I Can See It in Your Eyes

That is a solid album.

WHY you think "Don't Be Down On Me Baby" is a dud totally baffles me. I question the judgement of someone who can't see that that tune is perhaps the STRONGEST vocal performance SP gives on the entire recording! Total power and emotion!

WTH?
