Sounds great, but strangely no Deeno ad-libs. Wondering if it was completely live. Other footage of the event (DSB and SW) shared with me seems to be using Vegas 2001 in the BG mix, which is odd. I don't hear it in this clip tho.

Deen sounds incredible here. I doubt his vocal was live. Not a single flub and really stretching the notes.

Journey can clearly live on without Arnel and Jon. Deen sounds more like Perry anyway.

Shared vocal duties between Deen and Jason a possibility?

I am a big fan and a big advocate, but, I agree, this is too polished.

Just caught the proshot video.......so nice to see Deen finally getting to show off his singing on a bigger widespread scale! If this is going to be the four man lineup beyond Cain's and potentially Arnel's departures, I'm down to see what they can do. Maybe we can get more new music if Cain is out of the picture and Neal can just basically do whatever he wants with Deeno rocking the vocals. But if thats the plan, please get an outside producer this time Neal. We love your guitar work, but don't put the rest of the band's playing under a wet blanket like on "Freedom".

Narada WAS an outside producer. He was also a yes man - unlike Shirley. Exactly how Neal prefers it.

As for new music with this new lineup.....
They would have to get somebody to write the lyrics. Neal, by his own admission, is not really a lyricist.

Miles - Neal's kid - made a comment on social media also claiming the performance is lip synced. He thinks they were forced to do it for TV.

Oooh link?

I believe Miles and Neal have been estranged for years now, which is pretty sad. My gut says that's mostly Neal's fault. He seems to have a shitty relationship with several of his kids, including a daughter that made the news a few years back.

Good call, I do recall the drums sounding alright as well.

Yeah the lyric issue would have to addressed, but I'm sure he knows a person or two to help with that. Whether or not it would sound Journey-esque would remain to be seen but I'd definitely check out anything they release if that is even part of the plan.

Jack Blades and Jim Peterik would be great choices for lyric writing.

Doesn't the NFL always require this? (Especially for the Super Bowl Half Time.)

later~

Yes, I believe so. Lip Syncing for performances like this doesn't seem to be all that unusual anymore.

Screenshots were sent to me from Instagram. I don't have a link. Here's two comments from Miles.

"Lip syncing? Doesn't make sense to me dean is great. They must've made him do it for television. I think I remember that happening back when the chili peppers did the Super Bowl and they forced them to as well."

"it's off in some places. Regardless he is more then capable. It must have been for tv."

This is from the performance sent to Fil, with Arnel using auto-tune. Deen sounds horrible, cringe worthy in places. It would not surprise me at all if he is lip synching. He does not sound much like Perry at all. I believe he is very overrated now. He was good 15-20yrs ago....but not so much any longer...and this was three years ago.

Deen sounds awesome, if we are to go by the most recent full Journey show:

It is a fact that any singer can have a bad night for any number of reasons. And I really do mean anyone who has ever been a singer. But Deen sounds great in general!

I am all for Deen and Jason taking over vocal duties from Arnel. Having Deen and Gregg singing at the JTT shows worked really well. It was all about the music, which is why those shows were so exciting.

The footage cracks me up in the sense that it looks like Jon is working on something in his office, not playing a rock show to fans :)

Well, my definition of "Awesome" definitely is different than this. Mediocre and amateurish does not = awesome to me. Even back when he first started this, I would say Deen was "pretty good", but never awesome.

True...but I have not heard a recent Deen performance that impressed me in any way. For me, he RUINED "Mother Father", one of Journey's more powerful live songs. When you watch this, he actually believes he is doing a great job. He's not...it's bad.

And, people mistake THAT for Steve Perry? Listen to "Mother Father" in the MTV Escape concert...really? Deen sounds like that? Please. As far as I'm concerned, they may as well have Jonathan or Neal sing it...it won't be any worse than Deen.

There is nothing bad nor amateurish about the Lights performance I linked to. Deen is hitting the notes and then some. Subjectively, he has lots of feel. He's one of a small group of people who can channel Perry capably. He's not Perry in his 1981 prime but then no one is. Clearly, you're not a fan of him for some reason, but that's okay.
