Anyone know when this was done? Not sure if it's really SP or not...or has this already been covered?

Sounds like sorta like Perry, but not Perry.

That demo has popped up and been discussed endlessly. General consensus is that it is not Perry and that the keyboardist might not even be Jon. I personally thought it was Mickey Thomas from Starship. Someone posted it was gene miller and the demo is from his band fake id.

The voice is Gene Miller, who apparently was a session vocalist. Whether Cain had anything to do with it, your guess is as good as mine. First theory is a no, but I guess it is possible. It just doesn't sound like his style.

The only recordings I've heard of Miller released were as "Fake I.D.", which was basically a lot of session demos for songwriters Pamela Barlow and Janet Minto, with Miller on vocals. I think calling it a band would be stretching things. The cd was released by MTM music, which was a European melodic rock label. Either way, the above demo, whatever its origins, was not on the cd.

You can find a review for the cd here....

and several of the songs are on youtube

Good voice, but any connection to Journey is likely strenuous at best.

Thanks for chiming in. Yeah, I never ever thought this was Perry singing. Doesn't sound anything like him. Could be Miller was trying to do his best Perry imitation and ended up sounding like Mickey Thomas, lol...

Folks,

I've listened to and studied Perry since the early 80's. I have never heard this cut before. Based on what I'm hearing I'd bet significant $ that Perry is singing on this track. The mix is poor and there is zero vocal enhancement, it's a raw feed. I'd really like to know if anyone knows the details of this track and who are the players. I'm 95% sure Perry is on the mic.

Thanks,

Aaron

Based on what I'm hearing I'd bet it's from the ROR work that got axed. I can't tell you who is playing keys but Perry is definitely singing. Thank you for sharing this! I thought I had heard everything he recorded.

Thank you for sharing this these links. Gene Miller sounds great and is a new find for me. Thank you for sharing.

I've listened to Gene's clips and they sound great. However, the original clip shared, IMHO, is not Gene but it Steve Perry. If you listen vibrato frequency of the two it's clear that Steve Perry is the singer of the demo clip up top. I need to study Gene more as he sounds like a great singer. Thanks again for sharing.

If you listen to the vibrato frequency of the clip and other characteristics, Steve Perry is the singer on this demo.

While very close to Perry, it's not him. Somebody should tweet Jonathan and ask him about the song.

Not Perry.

Gene Miller, the song is "We All Want To Be Loved".

I have an aquaintance who knows or was regularly in contact with Gene Miller in the 90's and Gene sent him a bunch of stuff back then that he sang on. This song was one of them.

You must've spent all those years "studying Perry" at Trump U, because your education ain't worth shit. Doesn't take a trained ear to hear the differences. Sorry.

GD dude come on. We all know you're a genius. f Show me some proof it's Glenn and I'd be happy to buy you a beer. And if it is I need to study this dude a lot more. I'm still on the page it's Steve P. If anyone can bring real data I'm happy to hear it and buy a beer to all involved.

I respect your input but GD give the omniscient shit a break. FUCK.

You can copy phrasing down to a tee. What you can't copy is vocal tone--ie, how certain notes resonate on your vocal cords. You can put Perry, Augeri, Arnel, Gene Miller, Terry Brock, Kevin Chalfant and whoever else all singing the same note, and you can always distinguish it. No two people's vocal cords are the same....and that is NOT Perry under any circumstances.

It's not Perry's phrasing either (honestly, it's too high-pitched for any Perry post-1981, and style-wise, the writing isn't even close to anything Journey or solo that I've heard from him), and it doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard Cain write as well--so I'd be somewhat surprised if he had anything to do with it.

If you can't hear the differences (and the fact that the song was never released, not much else I can say to convince you barring a way to contact any of the people involved--or not involved, as the case would be in this instance.
