Um, that’s what the article is saying. By keeping the forests cleaned of old dead growth it protects against these types of fires being so fast growing. The forests are filled with matchsticks just waiting to flare up at the slightest lightening strike or stray cigarette butt. I might also add that clearing forests of a build up of brush and dead trees is common sense. We've got some green groups advocating for that to be banned and for a while there has been no controlled burning in bushland here. But a huge fire that wiped out a town a few years back had that turned around and now there are a few targeted burn-offs during early spring to protect us from summer fires.

BUT...there is still absolutely no doubt that the climate is entirely fucked up and everyone needs to play a part in making sure it doesn't get worse.

This is simply not true. If you really look into it you will find that studies show that unmanaged forests are much healthier than managed forests, for many reasons. All of the "stuff" that is not cleared provides habitat for smaller creatures, which provide food for larger creatures...the entire food chain is improved. There are also some species of trees that produce seeds that only take root only after the intense heat of a true forest fire...which means nature corrects itself. It is also seems there is an assumption that the "stuff" just sits there waiting to burn. Not true. In a normal "not climate change induced drought" the stuff rots and decays and provides more fertile soil for all plants to grow in...and all the stuff on top stops erosion.

The "Problem" is the extended drought making EVERYTHING flammable, careless idiots like FF who seem to think it's OK to through cigarette butts around, and thrill seekers who actually start the fires with arson.
