JUST picked up the extended cut of RAMBO last night and can't say enough about it. If you loved the theater version, the extra footage and dialogue adds so much to it and really fills it out. Satisfying from beginning to end with a few subtle changes along the way, like the "JOHN RAMBO" title in the opening credits, and some rearranging of scenes that helped the film pace smoother and not seem so rushed. They also added a bit more to the building tension and showdown between Rambo and the British SAS soldier that really was cool. Can't believe they cut all that stuff out! EXCELLENT, plus it has a full 1.5 hour video production diary that does all they way thru almost 60 days of shooting. About to finish that now. It was a steal on Blu-Ray at Wal-Mart for $13.86!

No surprise at all that the disc has a full trailer for THE EXPENDABLES and I can't wait for this film. Action movie HEAVEN with starring roles or at least cameos from tons of the great 80's/90's screen action legends, and the trailer is cool as hell. Stallone, Lundgren, Schwarzenegger, Statham, Jet Li, Eric Roberts, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis... If they'd added Van Damme, Seagal, and Chuck Norris it would have been near complete. Just a few more weeks!

So this is a second DVD release of Rambo? I'm glad I didn't buy the first edition. I was holding out for the rest of the footage!

It is.... I can't say enough for this if you're a Rambo fan. They also added some flashbacks to really flesh out and change the tone of another scene, and it's great. Since you don't like spoilers I won't say more until you see it.

I can't remember most of this being in the deleted scenes and those may have been kinda unpolished. This felt different. I wish they'd show the alternate takes. The first trailer had several different takes that weren't used in the film.

Well, I guess it is different. I just read awhile back it was going to be the deleted scenes and then some. I just read some reviews, and It seem that is not the case. I guess when I get a blue ray I will have to buy this copy. Damn movie kicks ass either way!

How did Million Dollar Baby "rip" it off? Rocky V was okay, but it wasn't the wrap-up the saga needed. Rocky Balboa is a much, much better film, and the one downside to it is that Apollo Creed was not represented in any form because (allegedly) Carl Weathers wanted too much cha-ching. Oh, well.

I thought Million Dollar Baby was a great movie. F'in depressing, though.

People on some movie websites (like aintitcool.com) were complaining that the Rambo extended cut actually toned down the violence from the theatrical version. I was looking forward to picking this up, if some scenes have been censored, I'll prolly pass.

Nothing I could tell, but there was at least one small place where I found a small bit missing -- when Rambo asks Sarah what she wants to do after the pirate attack, he doesn't bark "I'm not asking you" when the head jerk missionary tries to butt in. That should have been kept.

It hit me the very first time I saw Million Dollar Baby -- the whole story theme of the trainer trying to take their time with the young talent vs. letting them get tempted and sucked in too early by an unscrupulous promoter was the same as in Rocky V. I checked later on and even Stallone's commented about it.

Not sure what they could have done with Carl Weathers since his character died in Rocky IV. Going by memory, but I could swear I'd read it had something to do with using flashback footage in one of the montages, and someone also asked Sly about an appearance by Mr. T on AintItCool.com before the film was released. I think Mr. T may have shown up briefly in the flashbacks. I need to watch it again, probably tonight. Stallone is very good about giving evasive answers for things like this -- he gave a non-answer to the whole "no more Rambo movies" question very recently on the same website.

I do think Rocky Balboa was a better end to the character, because everyone wanted to see him back in the ring again. Of course, I'd still see Rocky movies if Sly made them into his 80's, even if it's not particularly good for the character. The lowest point in the series was Rocky IV and it still kicked ass. I don't think there could be a bad one.

After watching the Expendables, I'm anticipating walking out of the theater with a fully grown Grizzly Adams beard and 4 inches added to my cock. That's how much testosterone is going to be flowing that night.

We have a lot in common, Rip.

I like Rocky V as well. It gave off a side of Stallone and the Rocky character that we weren't used to being brushed up on. Even though it's not well liked since it had that early 90's feel, a retarded Balboa, and a soundtrack that was brutal, it still had a good story and the lines within the movie were SICK. Stallone always delivered with famous lines.

My fav:

" Hey you knocked him down, why don't you try knockin' me downa'.."

Everytime I see Stallone say that line, and the cold look he gives Tommy Gunn just makes me want to go out and make a living in street fighting. Awesome. I also loved "He might win a few fights, but a Rocky Balboa he'll never be."

Also, Stallone's performance of drama and realism is underrated. The part where he flips out after Tommy drives off and sets off his brain damage was worthy of a great manliness award. " I didn't want this!"

That whole movie is filled with great lines.

One of my favorites is drunk Paulie dressed as Santa Claus...

ROCKY: "Uhh, Paulie, I think it's supposed to be 'Ho 'Ho Ho'..."

PAULIE: "What's the freakin' difference? Where I come from it's 'Yo Yo Yo!"

As awesome as your movie ROCKY BALBOA was in updating us and giving closure to one of the most loved cinematic characters in history, I was very highly disappointed in not being updated and thus having closure on Rocky's past opponents. You had mentioned in the past talkbacks that we would see Mr. T return as Clubber Lang only to see a 3 second archive clip! Come on Sly, throw us a bone here!! You must agree that in order to have a successful protagonist you need a successful antogonist,

What happened to Clubber Lang? Did he become a boxing analyst or perhaps a televangelist after finding God?

What happened to Ivan Drago? Especially after the Glagnost & the fall of communism, it would have been interesting to see what happened to him. Did he migrate to the US and hook up with some hot U.S. Gymnast after divorcing his wife? Did he he become disabled due to his heavy steroid use?

Then you have Tommy "Machine" Gunn. Did he become a drug wasted hasbeen? Did he see the error of his ways even though it was too late? Was he convicted or raping a beauty queen in an elevator at a Las Vegas casino?

Surely these former opponents of Rocky didn't fall off the face of the earth after being defeated by the Itallian Stallion. Not only do the fans (especially me) need closure but these awesome characters you created need closure too. I assume they paid for your swimming pool & your indoor bowling alley!

Anyway a quick update on what happened to these now classic characters would be greatly appreciated!

9. Okay Tim, that one hits me right between the eyes.

In the last ROCKY I had written an elaborate storyline for Mr. T (AKA Clubber Lang,) which was reminiscent of George Foreman, who became a ringside analyst. In the script he was doing blow-by-blow commentary and also talking about his new profession of being an evangelist in the making. I thought it was wonderful because he was describing what it was like to fight Rocky Balboa while Rocky was fighting someone else. Unfortunately we couldn’t meet the actor’s financial requirements because we didn’t have enough money to buy fax paper, so I replaced him with HBO commentator Max Kellerman.

Ivan Drago I always believed went back to Russia where he was scorned and badgered into a position of disgrace and eventually succumbed to alcoholism and unfortunately then suicide.

As for Tommy Gunn, he was exposed as being a project that would never be fully developed as a man and also succumbed to a life of a mediocre fighter barn storming around the country and eventually transforming himself into Tommy ‘Boom Boom’ Gunn, second rate wrestler performing exclusively in the Midwest in third rate venues.

Apollo Creed, after his death had a very successful comeback in DAWN OF THE DEAD. But you’ll be hard pressed to recognize him because of severe decomposition.

And as for Adrian, she’s still working in that great pet shop in the sky waiting for Rocky to return.

Best line in the film...I still get pumped up every time I see that scene...like I can hear Chris Tucker in the background yelling "Rocky 'bout ta kick somebody's ASS!!" I love it!

I saw THE EXPENDABLES last night, and it ROCKED!!! I checked RottenTomatoes.com and noticed it only got a 42% rating, but RAMBO never got higher than 36%. I absolutely loved both films and they exceeded expectations. Best I can gather is lots of people just don't get what makes them special, and I found the same to be the case with PUNISHER: WAR ZONE, probably the absolute biggest surprise I'd had in the movie theater in years. I'd heard nothing good about that film all the way back to early script reviews, so my expectations were extremely low. I couldn't have been more pleased -- Lexi Alexander hit the nail on the head with that one, and if people don't get it, they don't get it. It truly was a film for the fans. So are these two Stallone flicks. Neither is B-movie material by any means, but they are both sparse on plot and character development -- strange as it sounds, that's not always a bad thing and it hinges on what the film is trying to accomplish. Sometimes for films like these, those things need to be kept stripped down and simple or they risk becoming distractions.

Especially with THE EXPENDABLES, Stallone concentrates on the testosterone from all angles, and really lets every character in the film shine. It never takes itself too seriously, so there's nothing to do but lighten up, sit back and just eat up every scene. A lot of the coolness and laughs come from all the dick-measuring going on between these action legends, such as Bruce Willis vs. Stallone vs. Schwarzenegger, Lundgren vs. Jet Li, Steve Austin vs. Lundgren (and Stallone, and Randy Couture), and Jason Statham vs. anyone who gets in his way. Mickey Rourke was also excellent. Each of these guys is such an incredible bad-ass, and the kills are often so over the top, you can't help but love it. I think I just "got it", just like RAMBO, and came away thinking it was a perfect encapsulation of what it was supposed to be. If anyone says the dialogue is weak, the one-liners fall flat, the plot is brain-dead, or the acting is bad, I think they just aren't getting it. Sometimes these films are more about creating powerful, adrenaline pumping "Hell YEAH!!!!" imagery than anything close to cerebral stimulation. I know it ain't for everyone, but I absolutely loved every minute of it and so seemed the rest of the packed theater.

Another thing that struck me is how young Stallone looked in this film. Grecian Formula, Botox, whatever he's doing -- it works. The dude looks about 20 years younger than he is.

The only criticism I had was that some of the fight scenes were very quick-cut, and I'm not a fan of that style. I know in some films it's used to make up for poor shots by directors who don't know how to film action convincingly, but Stallone just ain't one of those guys. I'm much more a fan of full action shots where you can really take in the movements, but there is still plenty of "damn that had to hurt!" to go around in THE EXPENDABLES. If you don't see it, you're missing out, and if you're a guy and don't like it, there's something seriously wrong with you.



P.S. -- the trailers were mostly for other upcoming action films, and one that interested me seems to be another similar multi-action star collaboration film called MACHETE, starring Danny Trejo. It also has Steven Seagal and Robert DeNiro. Never would have imagined Seagal and DeNiro sharing a film together. I'll have to see it.

I took my wife to Eat Pray Love tonight for our 24th anniversary tonight. I hope I get something "special" in return for this one.

We arrived late and had to stumble in during previews. Packed house. We had to sit on the third row. Yup, me, my wife and 150 middle aged ladies that seemed to be enjoying the movie MUCH more than I. There might have been 2 or three other dudes in there, but I didn't dare look up from the floor as we left because I was afraid I'd see someone I knew. Not only that, I'm sure they had every bit of testoserone drained from them as well and probably looked like a 50 year old women at that point anyway.

It was the worst frickin' movie I have seen in years. Not just because it was a chick flick, but because it seemed forced and was pretty much all around lousy. Bad acting and zippo script. ZZzzzzz. Hell, I had to leave and pee TWICE during the show. Long and boring. I guess my bladder even knows a bad movie when it sees one. Julie Roberts from the 3rd row was not the least bit flattering. Her lips look weird...was that bad botox or natural?

I about ditched my wife on the way out the door and sat down in the Expendables just to see if my nads would return. Being our anniversary, I guess that'll have to wait for another day.

I never saw it either. I watch a trailer show on HDNet and they showed both the old trailer and the new one. It was funny seeing both one after the other...some of the same shots, same cast, same dialogue, etc...but a lot more over the top in the old one.

Grindhouse was a double feature. Tarantino did Death Proof and Robert Rodriguez did Planet Terror. Rodriguez is doing Machete.

Robert Rodriguez is totally cool with me. I actually cooked his recipe for Puerco Pibil from the Once Upon A Time in Mexico DVD a few times, and it's fantastic. Tarantino acted like such a smug, no-class prick to the point it turned me off of anything he does.

I absolutely loved the book, so I hope the movie is not that bad, but Julia Roberts is really not a good actress - I don't care what the Academy says. If I still have the energy to go to a movie tomorrow after shovelling my parent's lawn to put in their underground sprinkler system, I am going to see 'The Expendables'! I loved Rambo and the Die Hard series and all of the best action stars from the 80s and 90s are in this one. (Okay, Steven Seagal is missing, but he hasn't made a decent movie since 'The Glimmer Man' and with his ego, I'm not sure how well he would work on a team like that).

The only way I'd want Seagal in The Expendables is to see every one of the other guys drop-kick him in sequence! Otherwise...fuggedaboudit.

And Van Damage turned down a role. What a douche.

I really liked it a LOT!! But I expect most men to absolutely HATE IT!! I'd never drag my husband to something like that. It wouldn't be fun anyway, because Id be feeling bad he was miserable Somehow "woman in mid life crisis trying to find herself" does not translate to a man in any way

I will read the book now. I wish I had before.
