Summer Concerts?

Postby Memorex » Wed Jul 02, 2014 2:00 am

I don't go to many shows anymore, but I have a few on my plate for a change. Anyone else seeing anyone fun? My summer line-up is/was:

OneRebublic (with The Script and American Authors). This was pretty good. I wen to see The Script, but it was the same show they did last year. I had never seen the other two bands. It has been a long time since I've been to a stadium with that many people. I think I'd have to go back 10 years to Elton John/Billy Joel. It was also the first time I've seen a place light up from cell phone camera flash lights. Kinda cool. However, there were a lot of people on their phones all night. Mostly kids. But there was one older dude in front of me with his hone on full bright browsing facebook all night. He never watched the show. I finally deployed the always reliable "Nickle to the back of the head" trick.

Michael McDonald. Just saw this show a couple nights ago. I knew it would be good, but I had no idea it would be that good. Holy shit it put it all out there. a little short at 90 minutes, but he gave everything. I felt like I was watching Rock Royalty. I hadn't seen him in nearly 20 years. I've seen him alone and with the Doobies and this was beyond all of it. Killer band too. I also felt a little dirty for all my comments against greatest hits live shows. This was mostly that with a few deeper cuts thrown in. I ate every bit of it up.

Upcoming for me are Rick Springfield (free show that the whole family is going to), Pat Benatar (first time her prices have been low enough to justify me seeing her. I've always wanted to), Rod Stewart/Santana (I know Rod has lost some of his steam, but still think it will be a great show. I've never seen Santana), and then a family and friends trip to see Journey/Joan Jet on Labor Day (first time seeing Joan Jet, I think and first time seeing this Journey line-up).

Recent:

Mickey Thomas & Starship - Maryland LIVE Casino
Cheap Trick - Lancaster, PA
Cheap Trick - Fairfax, VA

Upcoming:

Styx, Foreigner, Don Felder on July 4th - Scranton, PA
Dennis DeYoung - Maryland LIVE Casino
Billy Joel - Nationals Park - Washington, DC

Future:

The Bangles - Annapolis, MD in October
Judas Priest/Steel Panther - Pier 6 Pavilion - Baltimore, MD in October

I'm actually taking a pass on multiple tours I would normally see because of outrageous ticket prices mostly.

Billy Joel was a massive disappointment for me in April. Short set (barely 90 minutes at a pretty steep ticket price) with lackluster song selection. The show really paled in comparison to when i saw him with elton a few years back. hope you have better luck.

I'd love to see them, but their current schedule brings them only as close as 6 hours from me. Bummer. I'll keep an eye out in case they make it up here.

Saw Boston with Cheap Trick on June 27.

Seeing Steve Augeri in Connecticut this Saturday (July 5).

A bunch of others lined up. Heart, The Zombies, Chicago & REO, and Great White & Vixen.

I could almost make the Augeri show on the 5th if I take the 3 hour drive from Scranton, PA where I'll be for Styx the night before. The problem would be the long drive home the next day to Maryland.

Missing Heart only because I have an obligation the evening they're playing near me.

I love Trick and saw them consecutive days last month but the fact that Tom Scholz and his ghoulish looking Delp clone would be profiting off of it will keep me away from that tour. Would like to see Vixen.

I usually only go to one concert per year, pending finances.

I know Styx and Foreigner are coming to Maine, but I'm working.

First weekend of September, Xandria/Delain/Sonata Arctica are performing at the Worcester, MA Palladium. I'm hoping to get the time off and the finances to pull it off, but it's 50/50 at this point.

I lucked out, they are playing 20 minutes from my house. That is not usually the case for any of the bands I would actually go see.

Billy Joel hasn't been the same live act since he kicked Liberty DeVito from his band. Huge void left in his absence.

The last summer concert I went to was during Arnel's first Journey Tour promoting Revelation. That was how long ago? And I wonder if GI Jim has any of that TRunk Moonshine Whiskey left?

Passing on that tour because I can't bare to hear Paul Stanley as a shell of himself and the rip off prices for two 75 minute sets.

I wasn't going to go either Edward, but 4 tickets at $55 bucks total, couldn't pass it up. And most bands that we grew up with, their singers ARE a shell of themselves, every last one of them. I was just watching Elton John, his latest show "Black Piano" or something like that. The dude couldn't hit a basic high note if you blew one up his ass and I'm sure his mangina has tried that one many times. It was fucking sad to watch and eventually I turned it off.

Went to the Rick Springfield show tonight. It was a "free" show with admission to the Ribfest in Mankato, MN. So right there I had certain expectations. Figured the crowd would only pay half attention (true), figured I'd be seeing a lot of "interesting" white folks (true), figured Rick would only stick to the basic hits for this crowd (happily false).

He did three songs off the latest album, 1 off of SDAA, and some lesser-played old songs. Even had a cool medley in there. He covered Roar, Wild Thing and We Can Work it Out - all really good versions. He did a very stripped down version of "You and Me" which I would have loved to hear, but the crowd did not cooperate. I didn't let it get to me though because again, the time and place.

Our Ship's Sinking is such a great song and he played it as perfect as possible. It was pretty amazing. I think he turns 65 this week. You'd never know it from watching the show.

And the Ribs were pretty good. Coleslaw sucked. And no corn that I could see. I drove through 60 miles of corn fields to get there, but no roasted corn in sight.

Anyway, great show.

I'm going to see Chicago/Reo Speedwagon Aug. 9th, I actually won free tickets to this on the radio, for free I will go. The show I'm really looking forward to is the Michael McDonald / ToTo show on Aug. 29th.

Had tickets for Bruno Mars last year, but with the flood it was rescheduled. We got a refund. It was rescheduled to last night, my daughter ended up getting tickets and said it was, by far, the best concert she has ever been to! Sooooooo kicking myself for refunding our tickets last year! Nothing but rave reviews this morning on the radio.

KISS/Def Leppard in Camden, NJ this past weekend (8/3) Great show. KISS was better live than I expected and Joe Elliott sounded good... With the double bill, each band did 14-15 songs and DL was a greatest Pyromania/Hysteria/Adrenalize era. KISS did a lot of the hits, but some more obscure hits from what I am told, since I am not that knowledgeable on the typical KISS set.

I went to a show last night while working in CA. Rick Springfield/Eddie Money/LRB. I had never seen Eddie Money so I was looking forward to it. He's kind of an odd duck, but the show was pretty good. Too many added words though. Like trying to spur the crowd on after every single line. "I got two tickets to Paradise, come on now, you want to go to paradise? Anyone want to go to Hawaii?..." That kind of thing, but in every line in every song. His daughter came out for most of the songs and she sang great. Powerful voice.

LRB was good. Standard, as expected.

Springfield showed why he's the headliner and it amazes me how good he is at his age. It was pretty mush the same set list as the other night, with a few differences. But this time there was no Ribfest crowd talking too much.

Next up, Rod Stewart/Santana on Sunday, then Pat Benatar on Tuesday.

Greatest summer ever I think. Got to see Kansas in Santa Maria, Steve Walsh was awesome. Following week was Ringo Starr band at the Greek, phenomenal, have been wanting to see this lineup, it was fantastic and the price wasn't as high as Vegas. Next up was Motley Crüe and Alice Cooper at the bowl, the most effects of any show this year I will see. It was top notch, the Crüe Are the only band with taped backing vocals, fine with me it sounded good, rest was live. Great show. Deep Purple knocked it out of the park wed in Costa Mesa, perfect mix, Gillan was great and on his third night in a row with no signs of it ( I found this out later) had a great seat. Toto last night were great, Michael McDonald SUB par and he was having vocal issues. Next wed is Deep purple during Monterey Car Week in Saratoga at the winery, have a great seat. That's gonna rock. Decided to go again as I am in the Area on vacation doing the car week events.

I saw Rod Stewart / Santana Sunday night. Big show! I am not sure why my expectations were low. Recent Rod boots seemed to indicate he wasn't up to par. Wrong. He sounded really great. Really fun show. Santana was brilliant. I think I can still feel the percussion pumping through me. I hope the reunion goes on as planned. During the show I was thinking how awesome it will be to see Carlos and Neal going back and forth.

Tonight is Benatar. I have high expectations for this one, so hope it is a great one. And I am going with my 17 year old son, the only one of my kids truly into classic rock. Excellent!

Benatar was great. Exactly the kind of show I wanted. Great drummer too. No songs off my favorite album, Gravity's Rainbow, but I've come to terms that most shows I see will never feature many of the songs I like.

Anyway, her voice was really in great shape. I am an idiot for waiting this long to see them. Live and learn.
