What makes a Supergroup?

Looking through the MR page today, I saw this:

Los Angeles, CA — January 20, 2017 — Nancy Wilson, one of the founding members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group Heart, has teamed up with former Prince band member and R&B singer Liv Warfield to form a new super group called ROADCASE ROYALE.

It got me thinking, what makes a Supergroup? I don't think that this qualifies. Some guys from Heart - granted Nancy Wilson is great - and a couple of people who played with Prince. They might all be great musicians, but aside from Nancy, what "Super" work have any of them done that has made a name for themselves?

When I think of Supergroup, I think of Traveling Wilburys or Asia - a group where all of the players have made a name for themselves in bands prior to the new "Super" group. Putting together a couple of people who have played major roles in popular bands with other players doesn't cut it for me. Thoughts?

"Supergroup" is a term that's tossed around far too loosely, almost recklessly.

Roadcase Royale isn't a supergroup, it's Nancy Wilson's side band. That's it.

Yes, Asia is a supergroup, except for the time it was Geoff Downes and a bunch of other guys!

Black Country Communion is another example of a legit supergroup: Hughes, Bonham, Sherinian, Bonamassa. Each one of those guys had led their own band(s) and/or enjoyed time in major groups, e.g. Hughes was in Trapeze, Deep Purple, Hughes/Thrall and Black Sabbath, and has many solo albums, and had collaborated with Keith Emerson.

Winery Dogs = Kotzen, Sheehan, Portnoy. Supergroup? YES.

California Breed (now defunct) = Hughes, Bonham (replaced by another drummer), and a young guitar player. Supergroup? NO.

I would say that Damn Yankees would be considered a Super Group.

Agree with Damn Yankees. I was thinking about them after I posted originally.

IMO, Mr. Big's not a supergroup because half its members weren't as well-known as the other half when they formed.

I thought Bad English was just another version of The Babys with Neal Schon on guitar. Is that really a "supergroup"?

Kind of like Shadow King. Gramm and Campbell and two other guys = a band, but not a supergroup.

A "supergroup" seems to be a group of mostly well known musicians known for their success in other bands who get together for what usually ends up being a one off album, with some exceptions.

Damn Yankees, Hollywood Vampires, HSAS, Chickenfoot, etc.

Power Station and maybe Mike & the Mechanics also come to mind in regards to this topic as well.

Agree, though M&M were commercially successful. Should that be a criteria? If so, a lot of those listed earlier would not make it, I think.

So far, of those listed below only Aisa, Damn Yankees and Traveling Wilbury's would make my list. IMO, if it is truly Super, they need to be able to make commercially successful music as well. All three of these did, not sure about the others.

M&TM and Power Station both had guys who weren't household names in rock. M&TM had Rutherford and Carrack, with hired guns.

Agree on Damn Yankee and the Wilburys for sure, what about The Firm, with Jimmy Page and Paul Rogers?

Good one. You can also count Coverdale/Page.

Back in the day Bad Company was considered a supergroup, with Paul Rogers and Simon Kirke from Free, and Mick Ralphs from Mott the Hoople (who I love), and Boz Burell from King Crimson.
