It's about time

Def Leppard's new album next will be more rock and edge apparently according to Phil Collen. The interview is on Defleppard.com.

Let's just hope it isn't too little too late

Well, I've heard that before. I just hope it's true this time.

The funny thing is that even if they produce an album that rocks 90% of the time, they'll release the non-rocking tracks as singles and only play those live. Wait and see.

That is good news...IF it ever materializes.

Here's a story that was in our prep this morning:

Def Leppard is in no danger of hanging their guitars up anytime soon. The group is in their 29th year, and guitarist Phil Collen said they're taking cues from two of the biggest bands in the world. Collen told classicrockrevisited.com, "I would not want us to be a karaoke version of ourselves. But the fact that we have been recording and releasing new stuff makes us real. The Rolling Stones are still out there. I think we will still be out there when we are their age... If you have something to offer and you still have the hunger and the energy to do it, then why not do it? Look at Aerosmith."

Also like Aerosmith and the Stones, Def Leppard is working on new material. Collen said, "We have about eight songs on the go but we have two that are demoed. We are trying the new songs out backstage... We are doing some pre-production and we think we will have at least five or six songs totally produced and ready to go by the time we come off the road. We are going to start recording in January." The guitarist added that the new material "is very rock. In fact, it is more rock that it has been in a few years.... We want the next album to have a rough edge. I think the new album will be a lot more raw."

Sure, sure. This is before the producer and the band get a hold of it in post production and water it down to sound like crap. There's no way this album is going to rock, say along the lines of Tesla's Into the Now.. certainly not if Joe or Viv have anything to say about it. It might have one or two 'Scars' on it, though.

VH1 Classic had Def Leppard on for 1/2 hour yesterday for "Hangin' with Def Leppard". When asked about the new studio album, Joe already started backstepping on the release date. The earliest he would commit to was fall 2007. That of course could be delayed by the tour adding dates or even adding legs to the tour. Then of course it would depend on how happy they were with the material, etc...

I bet you don't see it before summer 2008, in time for them to tour to support it. So by 2008, in the 25 years that will have passed since Pyromania was released the leps will be readying their sixth studio album of new material. (Hysteria, Adrenalize, Slang, Euphoria, X and the new one). If you count Retroactive as new that makes 7 albums in 25 years. At least they're quicker than Boston.
