This Year's Tour

Postby Saint John » Tue Dec 05, 2006 4:00 am

This thread is ONLY IF YOU WENT TO A DEF LEPPARD/JOURNEY SHOW THIS YEAR. What do think was the fan breakdown. I attended the show in Moline, Illinois and I'd say that it was in the area of 75% DL and 25% Journey. I got blasted a few weeks ago on the Journey board for saying that DL was the group that brought the fans this tour. HOWEVER, I only went to one show. The rest was pretty much from reviews. Post what you think and please be honest. I like both bands a lot....but Journey more.

PS This thread has NOTHING to do with whose fans are "better" or ANYTHING like that. I just thought that Journey had poor attendance due to a lack of promotion/advertising. On the flipside, DL had a well run promotions campaign that got people to come to the shows.

My fair opinion is this. I went to 4 shows this year.. (what can I say I couldnt get enough with just 1 show)
I went to the West Palm Beach, FL, Tampa, FL, Charlotte, NC, and Orlando, FL show. I can say
the majority of the shows I went to the crowd was mostly into Def Leppard. :?

From where I was sitting in West Palm the freakin people must have been asleep or pee-ing during Journey sets.
Tampa they were quite a bit better, alot more into it.
Charlotte, hell I cant remember. I was front row and didnt even bother to turn around.
Orlando, same as above.

This is just my point of view. I thought both bands were spectacular.
The energy JSS brought to Journey was unbelieveable. I've been a leppard fan for 20 years and I can honestly say after the 1st time seeing Journey in concert, I was ready for more.

I can agree with the promoting and advertising. I think Journey should have been promoted alot more.
They are one hell of a band that could've brought in more casual fans.

I went to 2 shows and it was at least 3-to-1 for both shows for Leppard in both shows. Journey's perfomance did improve for the second show though

I went to the Indy show and thought it was about 65-35 in favour of Leppard, but both bands put on entertaining shows. Put it this way being from the UK it isn't very often you get such quality and professionalism in a single show let alone a double header. Credit to both bands!

I went to 2 shows- West Palm Beach and Orlando.
I was sitting pretty far back in WPB- and I'd have to say it was about 65-35 for Leppard there. Although where I was sitting was predominately Journey fans ( I think most of the DL fans were closer- but I was late buying mine due to a family vacation). Some left after Journey was done- which was a shame as the ones who stayed were impressed by DL's performance. I had quite a few good conversations with them, and they helped me "catch-up" with all things Journey.

Orlando- I was in the 4th row. I'd say that show as a bit better- mix wise. A DJ who's on the major classic rock station in town (WHTQ- for those in the area!) was telling me that his feed-back on the concert was about a 50-50 split. And I trust his info because he's been a sort of "friend" for quite a few years. It looked that way to me as well. The swag lines were even ( they weren't in WPB- DL's was MUCH longer!) and the cheering was about equal.

All that said, there were alot of "repeat-offenders" at the Orlando show, and some were "converts". That is to say- DL fans that had become Journey fans ( Or someone like me who had fallen away from the "hard-core" fandom- only to be brought back!), and the reverse ( Journey fans that were now into DL ) as well.

One thing I thing I can say with complete confidence- this tour was a great idea! It's benefits to BOTH BANDS can not be understated. Whoever thought this idea up should DEFinately be proud, as should both the bands. I know a lot of people were complaining about the ticket costs- @ $75 per ticket- but I can't see the problem!? 2 great bands, and 3HOURS of hits. You can't get that at that price much anymore.

Ok- off my soapbox now!
Peace, KC.

BTW- John, you may quote this post on the Journey board if you like. My thoughts are the same, no matter which camp I'm in

Saw them in Nashville this year, great show by both bands. Was suppose to see them a couple of weeks ago in Memphis, but stones kept me out. Would have loved to have seen them again. To see if Journey hap really improved as much as the word says they had (JSS), and to see the last song of Def's set which we missed in Nashville-ERIC

Saw them in Mt. View (San Francisco Area) and honestly I would say it was 60/40 in favor of Journey. Now that may be because it was the San Francisco Bay Area. Great show by both bands by the way.

Oh- even the "die-hard" DL fans will admit that any show in the "Bay area" is gonna be predominantly Journey fans.
Just as a show with the 2 in Sheffield would have been mostly DL fans.

There's no arguing with the "home field advantage" there! :D

No Sweetie- No rocks from me. 8)
Quite frankly- I'm the same! I just hope the guys wait to tour here until 2008 at least. That way- new album- new stuff.
And I also hope they do the tour solo. I have nothing at all against Journey! But I'd like a "night of DL" rather than the very tired 90 minute GH set!

And I even got Tesla on the ROA tour! But I'd still rather they do it solo- or like they did on the X tour- 30 minute opener ( Ricky Warwick) and the 2+ hours of just DL!

Even with a new album out, I doubt they will play very many tracks off it. I think they have a fear of trying anything new on their fans. It's either they bore the hardcore fans with the same hits or they upset the casual listeners who only know the GH. I think if that's going to be the case come next tour, I'll be satisfied with just seeing them once.

A solo tour... hmm, that would be great. But do you think they can pull it off without having to do a smaller venue? A smaller venue would ROCK IMO... Ruth Eckard Hall in Clearwater is real nice for that type setting. Queensryche plays there most of the time and it's very intimate and up close.

Actually, according to various members of the band- they've already got one about 2/3's of the way done.

But more to the point- my pocketbook needs a rest! My "concert" credit card is max'ed out, and I've seen them 5 times the last 2 years! Which is more than I'd seen them in the 80's-90's combined!

It depends on the album- Huh? I mean, if it gets airplay.........

But yes, I suppose they'd have to play smaller venues. But that would not be a bad thing IMHO. Much better seating all around.
(thinking King Center in Melbourne, Fl. Wouldn't that be something? Going to a show and NOT having to get a hotel, days off, driving X hours.......... )

I'm just not too optimistic about it. :? They had a great run with Journey, I just forsee them trying to do something similar next time they tour. It's about the almighty dollar and they saw alot of that this summer.

The radio stations around here wont play their new stuff I can guarantee that... I have NEVER heard a radio station around here play anything "current" of theirs. The 80s station promotes them but only the 80s music. Nothing new... :x

Ive actually gotten into the habit of enjoying traveling out for shows. The closest venue for me is atleast an hour away, plus it gives me an excuse to get away from home for awhile. :)

Once again- according to what some band members have said in interviews and to fans- it's supposed to be "edgier" than the last album.
What that means is anyone's guess. I'd like to think that they're going to be doing something more "Slang meets Pyromania". But until it's actually out- it's still up in the air. But the word is that this one is DEFinately going to be a Rock album ( unlike X- which was more popish).
I do hope that they do it right- and then tour the whole world with it. Even though I live here, I feel sorry for those in the other areas in the world that have seen little/nothing of these guys in years! We've had our 2 tours this last couple of years- we can wait!

Another package tour? Yeah, maybe. Like I said- it depends on how the new stuff is received. With all the accolades they've gotten this past year ( the tour, VH1 Rock Honors, etc) I still have some hope ( slim though it man be!)

As for Radio here- gone are the days that Fl. radio can break a song of their's ( ala PSSOM!) Huh? Shit- if it's not top 40, or Country, it doesn't fly here. But I have 2 local rock stations that still play their stuff- they even played "Rock On" - which in hindsight really blew me away!

Traveling to shows IS fun- but I've got 3 kids, with one getting ready to graduate HS next year. College fees are coming and I don't know if the funds will be there for major "road tripping" in the next few years! But yeah- it is fun, not question!

( as for the camera- I know what I want- I just don't know if Santa-hubby is going to GET it for me  )

Well, I didn't like Slang at first listen either- but it grew on me, and now it's in my top 3
And as for production- Slang didn't have any! It was recorded in a house in Spain, with them just jamming and taping the jams. They've said in interviews that it was a "stripped" down recording method ( ala the "grunge" thing that was prevelent back then) - totally different from their "signature production sounds" that they'd always used. Vivian even complained about the fact that he had wanted to be a part of the "DL sound" and didn't get to on the first album he was in on.

Don't get me wrong- I liked X (*dodges the tomatoes thrown* ) But I REALLY like it when they rock out!

Ok dude- tell you what- Pyro meets X with Slang-style lyrics? Is that better 8)

Just not another GH/Covers/ Filler album PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

IMO.... they should perform the ROCK ON MEDLEY that is on the new release of hysteria!!! if that doesn't bring peeps to their feet!!
i wouldn't mind hearing a little more from viv, as in the 2 sides of if. it would be a great respite in between the already known tunes.

I went to the Fresno show, and I'd say it was about 50/50, though the reaction by the end of both sets was bigtime for Journey. I've never seen a more uninspired, through-the-motions performance by DL. I was thoroughly disappointed. Their setlist was awful and they looked like they didn't want to be there.

I'm a huge DL fan and I may not go next time they come around as a result. As for any new record, I just hope its something they WANT to do and WANT to tour behind so maybe they'll put on a good show. They clearly weren't happy being in Fresno last time, for whatever reason.

HUH??? I was in the front row at the Fresno show, and by the look on Joe's face during the show, he was CLEARLY happy to be here. I shot vids with my digital at various points during the show, and every time Joe looked really excited by the crowd reaction, and looked like he was having a good time. Viv was the only one who looked clearly unenthused, IMO. He was the one who looked like he was going through the motions to me. Sav was having a good time, and so was PC. When I could see The Thundergod, he was clearly happy as well. I don't know what show you were watching, but from my vantage point, they were VERY happy to be here.
