I agree Andrew...

Thought the first few songs were so so (after opener FAR CRY)...
but I love 'SPINDRIFT', 'FAITHLESS', 'THE WAY THE WIND BLOWS', and the two
killer instrumentals 'MAIN MONKEY BUS.' & 'MALIGNANT NARCISSISM'.

My only real complaint is Ged's extensive layering of his vocals...prefer the lone vintage
tracking and a little less TEST FOR ECHO or VAPOR TRAILS style production. (I grew up
on them in the mid 70's and prefer mostly '75-'82 era.)

The elements I'm drawn to on the new record seem to be a nice mix of vintage,
'Counterparts', and the 'Feedback' ep. (What's cool is Nick R. got them to drop in
elements of their earlier work with little bits and pieces nodding to songs like 'YYZ',
'Hemispheres', & 'Witch Hunt'.)

Can't wait to see them live this summer for the zillionth time... :D

:? I have to admit that I'm holding out for the CD. It's taking a ridiculous amount of willpower to do so without going to download the music from somewhere else, but it's working so far. I just don't want to waste my first experience of Snakes and Arrows on a less-than-quality download.

Now, with that said I have checked out the samples at walmart.com and have made some initial notes about the music. Much more acoustic than expected as it's been a long time since they've really used that much in their music. Also, I simply can't help but to keep thinking of Ged's "My Favorite Headache" throughout. I know that these are just segments as there is so much more, but I have a good feeling about this one as well. "Far Cry", as I have heard from more than one critic, is indeed the topper of this album; however, the others appear to be excellent complements rather than just other songs they whipped up.

Quite a departure from "Vapor Trails" and a nice throwback to the past :) I guess it's no surprise that I've really been listening to Rush's harder and more vintage music lately, rather than their 80's poppish stuff. I haven't been in the mood to listen to ANYTHING else - music or groups - since "Far Cry" was released. THAT is what's surprising me.

You gotta buy the CD's, dudes. That's how musicians make a living. I won't download ANYTHING that's not either out of print or IMPOSSIBLE to find. It's hard enough to make it in this industry.

  I heard over at http://www.rushisaband.com that the album has been put on some store shelves in some parts of the country. The guess is that it has something to do with the leak and releasing it early will counter the rip offs that will happen out there.

 If you ask me, I think that it was a mistake to wait a month between releasing the single to releasing the album. 2-3 weeks MAX - it's all that most die-hards can take without resorting to piracy and stuff like that.

Geddy, Alex, and Neil have nothing to worry about with me. They're going to get my money no matter what. :D

Not just 'My Favorite Headache', but also shades of the guitar work from 'Victor'. Have to say I'm digging
what I've heard so far, and next Tuesday is gearing up to be a fine day...Rush in the morning, and
Black Sabbath, er Heaven and Hell, live that night. 8)

there's nothing wrong with downloading a leaked copy of an album as long as you plan to buy it when it comes out

Yes..even if you download this, BUY THE CD!!. The boys actually let go a little this time and improve on Vapor Trails. Agree on the layering of Geddy's vocals. Not my thing. They could replace the vocal layering with some keys (on light side) or guitar/other.

Top 3

Postby Liam » Fri Apr 27, 2007 7:22 am

Got my top 3 songs from this album (today)

1.The Main Monkey Business (Very complex instrumental)

2.Bravest Face (Love the way Geddy sings the Chorus "In the softest voice there's an acid tongue")

3.Malignant Narcissism (LISTEN TO THAT FUCKIN' BASSLINE. SHIT. lol)

These are subject to change at any time. lol LOVE the whole album though.

Can't wait till Tuesday when I get the REAL quality cd. :-)

I agree. This is a great CD. More song oriented than some of their other stuff. But man, some great hooks in these songs! I love Armor & Sword. The way the heavy part comes in just sounds great. A lot of the songs have a folk oriented style. Very nice stuff. Can't wait to purchase it on Tuesday myself!

Just picked it up at Wal Mart today. I'm loving it so far, which I couldn't say after the first listen to either "Vapor Trails" or "Test for Echo". My first impression is it's the best thing they've done since "Roll the Bones" or possibly "Hold Your Fire".

Geddy's and Neil's playing is as good as ever but Alex wails on this like he hasn't done since perhaps the early 80s. The instrumentals are excellent also.

No, it's not impossible. I bought the thing and the CD is currently sitting on the stand next to my chair and I've listened to the entire thing. Someone posted earlier in this thread that it was being released early in some parts of the country due to its being leaked to the internet.

Walmart has it available for download(neither store near me had the disc out, yet), and I'm liking it much better than the last two for lots of different reasons. 8)

I agree... when Alex is heavier in the mix and playing edgier leads, that his been my favorite stuff over the last 20 years.
(I'm primarily into their mid 70's to early 80's material...)
