There is some amount of rumor that Paul Rodgers was NOT the first choice, and that John Farnham turned down the gig previously, as he was retiring from full-scale touring. The fact that there is a version of We Will Rock You with Queen backing Farnham that was eventually released on Farnham's Greatest Hits album makes the possibility very real.

It would have been interesting to see what would develop from Queen + John Farnham. Farham definitely has the voice to sing Queen if he wants to, and some of his solo material isn't a million miles removed from the Queen sound. It probably would have been the only option for someone in the US to see him perform live. C'est la vie...

I think it's hard for John to be in a group without overshadowing it eventually. Little River Band is a good example. He kept them on the charts but they seemed to despise his interaction with fans and oversinging which the crowd loved but seemed to make Beeb and Graham feel like he was doing his own impromptu solo show. It's a shame because once John left, LRB fell off the charts never to return.

I think there is probably some truth to that. In his own way, John Farnham is probably just about as big of a focal point as Freddy Mercury was. I remember some remark he mentioned once, probably halfway in jest, that he loved being in a band, as long as he was the leader. Of course, 40 years as a solo artist will probably do that to you. He never really managed to break out of Oz, but I can't say he's done too poorly there, so he obviously has good judgment and/or good management.

John Farnham is one of the few who could really do justice to the full Queen catalogue. It would have been interesting to hear his renditions of some of those Queen songs. Can't say that I blame him for turning it down though as he seems to be happy with his solo career. Too bad though, since I'll probably never get the chance to see him live. One of the few living singers who actually sounds better live than studio, and the only one I've ever heard who NEVER has a bad night. The guy's voice is unstoppable--and virtually unchanged also.

There is probably a bit of truth to both sides of the argument. I have always believed that the singer is the most important element of EVERY band, and that will never change for me. Perry made huge hits out of "Open Arms" and "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'", and both of those songs SUCK, on the highest levels. Two of the absolute worst songs in the entire catalog. It's a fucking embarrassment that "Open Arms" will forever go down as the biggest "hit" that Journey ever had! There will never be a way to prove it, but I can't imagine any other singer could have turned those abortions of songs into the hits that they became.

no disagreement there, but even with Perry's amazing vocals, I don't really consider either of those songs to be great. I think some of the songs like Homemade Love are worse than those mentioned, but the point still stands.

Was his graduate thesis a part of a symposium on Debbie Downerisms and douchebaggery?

Well if you read my post, I'm quite certain I made it clear that I don't consider either song to be "great". In fact, I'm quite sure I said I think they both suck! Even when Perry was singing them, I wanted to slap the dude every time he started belting out one of those gay songs. The fact that "Open Arms" is still played on the radio several times every day is insane for a song I've always thought sucked ass!

well, we can agree on something, at least. If I never heard either of those two songs again, it wouldn't be a moment too soon.
