You actually went to Boise to shoot these pics? Are you going to be in Anaheim Wednesday?

Thanks for sharing Pam! Some great pics there!

This one should be in the dictionary across from the word 'emote'. :)

Jesus Deb, would you please stop with the emoting BS? Every singer emotes when they sing. Everyone from Steve Perry to Bob Dylan. Argh

Steve Perry definitely, but the last thing I would call Bob Dylan's mumblings, would be......is, emoting. And no, not every singer emotes, not even close, some just stand there and don't really get into it much. He's emoting in that shot, just callin' it how I sees it.

You did a fantastic job there , Pam. Great photos. Thanks!!!

You are so right, Deb. Many singers do not emote. They look as if they blend in with the other inanimate objects around about them. Jeff does not sing he enacts and delivers a song full of feeling and emotion far better than most vocalists.

Dadgumit... Those are excellent, and my video would have been outstanding if I'd had my other camera with me. Unfortunately, I forgot my SD card and had to use another camera, so it's not as crisp and has some sound distortion. I did upload it and will post it anyway when it completes processing, because it was a fantastic performance.

Here is mine -- sorry it's not as high-quality as the others, but I felt Jeff's performance was way too good not to post it.

@Deb, Pam, & Fan of Jeff

Thanks very much. :) ! Jeff has definitely grown into the star of that show, but that's really no surprise, is it? 2 years ago he had a great solo or two, then (if I'm not mistaken) 3 last year, now 4. They should just do the right thing and change the name of the band to JSO or TSOto.

Thanks! I have hundreds, but haven't even begun to go over them all yet. I don't have any individual ones of Jeff's solos because I videoed all 4 of them. Unfortunately just that one song I posted came out best. Possibly another, but I'll need to look over them. I watched the video streamed to my big TV last night and really like the shot I got -- just not the sound, and I wish it were a bit more crisp.

The main Christmas portion of the show has been similar for the past few years, so most of my shots are also very similar to my slideshow from last year (click the thumbnail to view it):

I'll pick a few other new ones out soon and post some more.

Well, that's the good thing... Normally my little concert camera that captures really clear sound is a Sony Cybershot DSC-H20, and the 10X zoom definitely comes in handy. When I forgot my SD card this time, I had to use our Canon G11 -- the G11 is a much better point-and-shoot camera that you can set just like a DSLR, and it also can accept an external flash. It's just a little bulky and heavy to be toting in my pocket, and a huge downside for concert videos is the microphone is not nearly as good as the Sony, hence the distortion during heavy bass and drums.

Sony DSC-H20

The Sony doesn't have a viewport, so it's screen only.

Canon G11
Image Image

The Canon has a flip-out screen which also swivels 180-degrees up and down as well, which makes it easy to hold the camera low or high and still see the screen. Great for taking sneaky video -- just not concerts I guess, LOL.

Here's an example of a video I took with my little Sony, and you can definitely hear the difference in the sound. I had no idea that video was going to get as many YouTube views as it has -- close to 90,000 now:

ROBERT PLANT / BAND of JOY - "Rock and Roll" - 7/15/10
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH8WvQ0W0yI

I'm still pretty green at this, but learning just a tad bit more every time. I might e-mail the person who did those excellent JSS vids above to find out what they are using. Also, I'd definitely appreciate any leads or tips from anyone who is into this stuff. I've been just stumbling thru it.

Thank you for the info on the camera! I take my little Sony Fine Pix everywhere and it takes great sound quality vid, but can't zoom once you start recording and the flash only gets to a couple feet. So if the lighting is right for stills, the camera is great. But it would never have handled a show like the TSO show. I have trouble getting good pics most places because the lighting is way too low. If I can get the timing just right and get a photo when the subject is still enough it turns out great. Cindi has given me some great pointers so at least now I know how to work with what I have. It's a great little point and shoot camera. I think it has more capabilities, but I just need to sort them out.

Having said all that I want a new decent camera soon! Thanks, Rip!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to you, too! As little as I know about photography, I've definitely found from experience that concert lighting is tricky if you want to get any half-decent shots. A pro concert photographer told me that for many concerts, they'll do the first few songs with whiter lighting so the photogs in the pit can get decent shots. After that, it seems tougher without the right equipment or settings. I believe I've been told to use high ISO and a very fast shutter speed. Some of the lenses that the pros use for this stuff are quite expensive, and wouldn't be anywhere close to practical for casual photography.

Lighting color is definitely a factor though, and red light seem to be the absolute worst for getting clear shots for me. I joked with JSS that 3 years in a row, they always give him the worst lighting for taking pictures, lol. Looks great during the performance, though!

Well you did a fantastic job! I had the Canon G-10 and I *HATED* that camera. Ended up selling it to put the funds toward my Nikon D-90 last year. I'm normally anti-Canon, but I may have to look into the G-11 in the future, because I do like the RAW capability. Right now, my concert camera is the Panasonic Lumix TZ-7. I was rather disappointed in the video quality during Jeff's solo last year - it kept going out of focus, and the sound is a bit muffled:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP2qGzwUi64

But at Nickelback in October, it was better sound quality:

Thanks for the info on your camera! You took some fantastic pics!
