The story behind this picture....

When the Vancouver Canucks lost the Stanley Cup Finals on Wednesday, thousands of disgruntled fans took to the streets. There was looting, wanton destruction, and general insanity for several hours, even as armored Vancouver police attempted to squash the brouhaha. Most pictures of the incident show angry hockey fans starting fires and destroying shop windows, but one shot in particular has caught the attention of many internet goers.

The photo above has taken social networks like Twitter and Facebook by storm, as it appears to show a young couple in a loving embrace, even as riot police attempt to clear the streets by force. But unfortunately, the story behind the photograph is much less romantic.

According to bystanders and those familiar with where and when the picture was taken, the couple had actually been thrown to the ground by charging riot officers. The woman had landed head-first on the pavement, and her boyfriend was thrown on top of her. Although the woman was visibly shaken, the officers moved on, leaving the young man to comfort her.

Additional angles of the picture have since found their way to the web, showing bystanders coming to the aid of the couple, and corroborating their less-than-heartwarming tale. Twitter, Facebook, and other social avenues can be an amazing tool for spreading information, but sometimes, as was the case with this particular photo, misinformation can spread just as fast.

Apparently, the Canucks feel they were robbed by the officials in the Finals.

This douchebag can't man up and just admit they were outplayed and didn't deserve to win.

Never mind that Vancouver has taken a permanent black eye by the hooligans who destroyed the city after Game 7.

I still can't believe that white people did this. I would expect this out of Gary, Indiana!

Anyway, I just read this and my jaw dropped:

"43-year-old Boston forward Mark Recchi had more points (seven) than the Sedins and Ryan Kesler combined in the series."

Those rioters should have been destroying the homes of the Sedin sisters and Kesler! But I will say that Kesler was a force on the ice and I'll give him a pass because he played well hurt. The Sedin sisters? Someone give the rioters their addresses!

For a minute there, I thought Thomas was gonna be stiffed on the Vezina like Weber was stiffed on the Norris. Clearly Lidstrom won on reputation. Weber 213 hits, Lids had 49. 49 measley hits. LOL. Weber 62 takeaways, Lids - 33. Weber was the CLEAR Norris winner this year, with Chara coming in 2nd.....Lids was a distant 3rd....JOKE.

I'm just happy that one of the Sedin Sisters didn't win the MVP!

Wipe your tears . Lidstrom was the overall better defender, hence why had more votes than Chara and Weber. Chara aint all that and wouldve been way down the list if he didnt have Thomas behind him.

Better defender? His +/- was a -2....Chara's was a +33. State your case.

BTW, your logic is flawed....I know of no pitcher that didn't get a Cy Young award because he had a Gold Glove, future HOF-er playing behind him....try again, homer....

No shit. Jimmy Howard's stats were almost as good as Thomas', and there can be little doubt the Red Wings had far more pure talent than the Bruins.

+/- doesnt reflect the overall performance of a DEFENSE MAN. If Lidstrom had Thomas behind him, he would be +50 .
Judging defensemen requires a more qualitative approach than forwards. He is a overall polished TEAM PLAYER. This is a team sport and if you cant recognize Lidstrom as the consumate hardworking team-player that he is, then you dont know this sport at all.

Well, if judging a DEFENSIVE player is qualitative, and not quantitative - and you can't show me how the voters came to the conclusion as to how they voted....then I call BS on the results. If you can't measure it....it's bogus. For a guy that had far less hits, and a horrendous +/-...come to the table with more than judging a defensive player is more esoteric than judging a forward. One more thing, it is an individual award. Not a team award. So take your 'team player' smack, and get the hell out of here.....you've failed to make your case.

It's an invidial award , yes for an individual who did his best defensively for his team. Are you that stupid? Don't answer.
He got the most votes because he was the best overall D for his team , regardless of his +/- and hits.

Of course if he was playing for Bruins , then you wouldn't give a fuck about how he got the votes ;)
Nick has the trophy , you have teary eyes , I think the case is clear. Need a tissue ?!

Dude, when you have as much talent as the Wings and a netminder who, in the grand scheme of things, is actually better than Thomas - and just slighty behind him this season, numbers-wise - it's preposterous to suggest Lidstrom would have had a higher +/- total with Thomas behind him. Bullshit.

Anyway, I love Lids & The Dead Thing, so who cares? All that matters is the Bruins won the Cup against a bunch of ice-dancing, diving crybabies. I had TONS of respect and admiration for Vancover and its team before they spent most of the series cheap-shotting and diving, and then burning their city to the ground because they lost Game 7.

B....are YOU that stupid? I'm not saying Chara should have gotten the award. I think Weber should have. You keep saying Lids was the best overall defensive player in the league. How do you quantify that assertion? What stats are you using? Oh wait...I got it....he's a Red Wing. That's why he should have gotten it....

They never left the NHL, home fries, they're still there. They even still have a player who was a Jet before the move.

When I heard this I assumed it meant they were taking the Coyotes back, since they're on the brink of folding in Phoenix. Was surprised to hear it was Atlanta moving.

2012 Playoffs ...Ignore the poll please..

I know we're still a month away from playoffs but I figured this year we keep the same thread so we can have Dean's posts included in our annual NHL Playoff thread . :(

...Yeah I'm starting to doubt my pick for the Bruins repeating as Cup champs. Rask went down with an injury, Thomas is out of gas, and Turco is making swiss cheese look like a more suitable goaltender...

Thank god, for a minute I thought I fell asleep for 3 months when I saw the 2012 playoff thread already had 30 pages. Good idea though. :D
