The other issue with Newt on a national level is that his flip-flopping is on the record on any number of issues.

Santorum is probably the strongest of the conservative candidates, but I'm not sure his ideaology could win over a substantial enough percentage of independent voters. He does seem to be beyond reproach on his platforms far more than Gingrich or Romney.

Flip-flopping seems to be a job requirement these days... ugh! :x I guess for me it depends on what they're flip-flopping about. Some things don't seem to matter as much as others. It's more of the 'values' topics that consistency matters most to me. People are entitled to change their minds, as long as it's done for a legitimate reason, not just political expediency. I like Santorum, just not sure he's got enough of the 'it' factor (whatever 'it' is) to really compete with a campaign-savvy candidate like BO.

ya... a ticket straight to hell....

..and don't forget to give Bill credit for signing into law, and Congress for passing, the act (Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act of 1999) that repealed the existing, 75 year old act (Glass–Steagall Act of 1933) that, had it not been repealed, would have prevented the economic meltdown in 2008....

The repeal of provisions of the Glass–Steagall Act by the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act in 1999 effectively removed the separation that previously existed between investment banking which issued securities and commercial banks which accepted deposits. The deregulation also removed conflict of interest prohibitions between investment bankers serving as officers of commercial banks. This repeal directly contributed to the severity of the Financial crisis of 2007–2011 by allowing Wall Street investment banking firms to gamble with their depositors' money that was held in the commercial banks.

I would pay to see it. Newt and Barry is not a match the Dems want if the American People are serious about righting this ship. Those debates would educate beyond belief and I'm eagerly looking forward to them. First though is SC tomorrow.

Reread my warning about Newt Gingrich a few pages back. Newt? - who was for an individual mandate on health care in the 90's, called himself a futurist and said the US Consitution is outmoded, angry derided republican rebellous members of the house as "you conservatives", advocated global warming solutions with Nancy Pelosi, called Ryan's entitlement reform right wing engineering, etc etc etc. Serious about righting the ship ? Sorry Chuck, he aint no Coolidge, Goldwater or Reagan. Remember when George W Bush ran adds in South Carolina in 2000 saying that people should vote for him over McCain because he was the real conservative. Howd that work out for you? Same argument Gingrich is using against Romnmey. Some of you folks just keep falling for it.

I'd laugh at it if if didn't want to make me fuckin cry.

Well I hope that you are right. You also better hope he gets the nomination 1) he can win and 2) he does govern conseratively. Because if he doesn't win every one is going to blame pin Newt to the Tea Party and small government conservatives and they will be through . If he wins and doesnt govern conservatiely nothing willi get fixed and the tea party and small government conservatives will end up taking the blame and they will be through. We'll see.

What does Nancy Know -

Postby Gin and Tonic Sky » Thu Jan 26, 2012 4:40 am

Ok, Nancy Pelosi says he will never be president because she knows something .........

Is it that Newt is a closet fan of big government. No not likely, everyone knows that its no secret- hes made that very clear to anyone who will listen, (clearly the folks of SC didn't, but I digress)

Is that hes fat, no theres much more to it than that (although we havent had a president with a huge gut like that since before we had TV .

You know what I think Nancy was part of this open marraige plan. They got on that couch and talked about global warming and something else was heating up. He was chasing her around the House of Representatives with a big ole woody and they decided to make it their little secret.

Will she ever actually tell. We'll see/

Not a single comment or mention on ANOTHER foreign policy achievement by the Obama Administration. The Navy Seal 6 team, the same team that put OBL in the Ocean, rescued an American and a Dutch relief worker who were kidnapped since October. Sure, Obama wasn't there on the ground, but Leon Panetta is a Helluva Sec od Defense and deserves an Atta Boy from every citizen in this nation, but we know that isn't forthcoming is it?

Sure does. It's not going to make any difference anyway. You and I know the right has nobody running that is electable. The sad part is, they know it too.

The "Right" just keep on fucking it up. Indiana just passed "Right To Work" legislation. This will do nothing but take more money out of the common peoples hands and put it into the hands of the rich. If you haven't noticed, you dumb assed right wing jerk off, think for yourself, idiots, the people you elect and protect and lobby for, are the very worst thing in the world for the economy.

Economy 101, for you idiots. Put money in the hands of people that will fucking spend it.

Rick, this post and attitude are below you. I'm a little disappointed.

I'm glad we passed RTW. It was the right thing to do. If the unions do their job effectively like they're supposed to, it shouldn't matter one iota to them. Most workers are still going to choose to join a union, if given the chance and, contrary to union scaremongers, there is no conclusive study that I'm aware of that shows wages are lower in RTW simply because of the RTW law.

The union tactics in this whole debate in Indiana have been below board, i.e. protesting in front of people's homes in private neighborhoods, threatening lawmakers, slandering people calling them criminals for supporting the law, and attempting to drown out lawmakers at yesterday's vote who supported the law even after being asked by opponents of the law on the Indiana State Assembly floor to remain respectful when opponents were speaking.

I appreciate the sentiment Dave, but the whole thing is aimed at one goal, which is to take money away from you and me and put it in their pockets. All it is, is a big fat chess game. Use the law and whatever means there are to achieve the goal. Indirectly, they're going to create another third world nation, and while I'm sure they don't want to do that, they're heading straight down that road.

I know how bad unions can be, as I've seen the worst in action, but that's a small fraction of the unions in operation in the world. Working people need some form of protection from the unscrupulous.

That's no more true than saying the greedy union fatcats want as much money as they can for themselves. Come on...Greed and corruption goes on in union leadership just as much as it does in company leadership.

I can't argue with that. My worry is that the rich keep getting richer and.... you know the rest.

Told you it would not happen. Obama cannot be seen participating in this. I agree he brought this on himself by fighting so hard against all this, but a President cannot be seen at this level. Looks like he'll lose this one and since it's Georgia, not give a shit.

TARP paid in full?..... not so fast...

Taxpayers still owed $132.9B from bailout: report
http://news.yahoo.com/taxpayers-still-o ... 22679.html

WASHINGTON (AP) — A government watchdog says U.S. taxpayers are still owed $132.9 billion that companies haven't repaid from the financial bailout, and some of that will never be recovered.

The bailout launched at the height of the financial crisis in September 2008 will continue to exist for years, says a report issued Thursday by Christy Romero, the acting special inspector general for the $700 billion bailout. Some bailout programs, such as the effort to help homeowners avoid foreclosure by reducing mortgage payments, will last as late as 2017, costing the government an additional $51 billion or so.

The gyrating stock market has slowed the Treasury Department's efforts to sell off its stakes in 458 bailed-out companies, the report says. They include insurer American International Group Inc., General Motors Co. and Ally Financial Inc.

If Treasury plans to sell its stock in the three companies at or above the price where taxpayers would break even on their investment — $28.73 a share for AIG, $53.98 for GM — it may take a long time for the market to rebound to that level, the report says. AIG's shares closed Wednesday at $25.31, while GM ended at $24.92. Ally isn't publicly traded.

It will also be challenging for the government to get out of the 458 companies as the market remains volatile and banks struggle keep afloat in the tough economy, it says.

Congress authorized $700 billion for the bailout of financial companies and automakers, and $413.4 billion was paid out. So far the government has recovered about $318 billion. The bailout is called the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or TARP.

"TARP is not over," Romero said in a statement. She said her office will maintain its commitment to protect taxpayers for the duration of the program.

Treasury spokesman Matt Anderson said the department "has made substantial progress winding down TARP and has already recovered more than 77 percent of the funds disbursed for the program, through repayments and other income."

"We'll continue to balance the important goals of exiting our investments as soon as practicable and maximizing value for taxpayers," Anderson said.

The government has unwound its investments in four of the companies that received the most aid: Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc., Chrysler Group LLC and Chrysler Financial, the automaker's old lending arm.

On Wednesday, Treasury announced that it had sold the final batch of securities under its $368 million Small Business Administration loan program under TARP.

In Romero's quarterly report to Congress, she said her office has uncovered and prevented fraud related to TARP. Investigations by her office resulted in criminal charges against 10 people and three convictions in the quarter ended Dec. 31, the report notes. Altogether, the investigations have resulted in criminal charges against 61 people, including 45 senior company executives, according to the report. Thirty-one of the 61 individuals have been convicted. Civil charges have been filed against 38 people.

Economy 101, for you idiots. Put money in the hands of people that will fucking spend it.

Hey Rick! Hope you're well. I have to disagree BIG time with this sentiment though... I'd rather put my money in the hands of people who EARN it, not who will spend it. My biggest beef with the left is the whole "entitlement" mentality. It must be nice for people to sit on their asses all day while the rest of us go out and earn their salaries. :? Really makes me sick.

Wow....

It's Official: German Economy Minister Demands Surrender Of Greek Budget Policy, Says It Is First Of Many Such Sovereign "Requests"
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/its-offic ... rst-many-s

While over the past 2 days there may have been some confusion as to who, what, how or where is demanding that Greece abdicate fiscal sovereignty (with some of our German readers supposedly insulted by the suggestion that this idea originated in Berlin, and specifically with politicians elected by a majority of the German population), today's quotefest from German Economy Minister Philipp Roesler appearing in Germany's Bild should put any such questions to bed. And from this point on, Greece would be advised to not play dumb anymore vis-a-vis German annexation demands. So from Reuters, "Greece must surrender control of its budget policy to outside institutions if it cannot implement reforms attached to euro zone rescue measures, the German economy minister was quoted as saying on Sunday. Philipp Roesler became the first German cabinet member to openly endorse a proposal for Greece to surrender budget control after Reuters quoted a European source on Friday as saying Berlin wants Athens to give up budget control." And some bad news for our Portuguese (and then Spanish) readers: you are next.

Reuters article: http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/ ... vrit=56943

"We need more leadership and monitoring when it comes to implementing the reform course," Roesler, also vice chancellor, told Bild newspaper, according to an advance of an interview to be published on Monday.

"If the Greeks aren't able to succeed themselves with this, then there must be stronger leadership and monitoring from abroad, for example through the EU," added Roesler, chairman of the Free Democrats (FDP) who share power with Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Reuters reported on Friday that Germany wants Greece to give up control of budget policy to European institutions as part of discussions over a second rescue package.

Greece, which has repeatedly failed to meet the fiscal targets set out by its international lenders, is in talks to finalise a second 130 billion-euro ($172 billion) package.

With many Greeks blaming Germans for the austerity medicine their country has been forced to swallow, officials in Athens dismissed the idea of relinquishing budget control as out of the question.

Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said on Sunday Greece was perfectly capable of making good on its promises.

"Anyone who puts a nation before the dilemma of 'economic assistance or national dignity' ignores some key historical lessons," he said in a statement before heading to Brussels for a European Union summit on Monday.

And by the way, this is just the beginning:

A government source in Berlin said Germany's proposal was aimed not just at Greece but also at other struggling euro zone members that receive aid and are unable to make good on their obligations.

So yes, it is true, and Germany is dead serious. Ball is in the Greek court now: just how far will the new technocrat PM go to sell its people in exchange for a few banker smiles?

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Ireland next up? Seems logical to me. By the way, this collapse? The collapse of Euro states is the only thing, I repeat the only thing that can brat Obama in November. A chain reaction could, maybe knock our train off the tracks enough to derail our economic recovery ie., slow it down; because it is recovering, much to the chagrin of you Cons, the economy is recoverying and has already turned thr corner. The timing couldn't be worse for the GOP.

This shouldn't surprise many people. According to a Pew Research poll, the liberals who relentlessly advocate higher taxes are three times more likely than conservatives to think it's okay to cheat when paying them. They are more than twice as likely to excuse getting paid under the table so as to keep collecting unemployment benefits. Liberals also have less of a problem with shoplifting and buying stolen goods.

I don't know about the veracity of this particular study but this doesn't really surprise me. Liberals are more likely to believe in subjective morality, i.e. "if it feels good, do it".

Deano.. you must be smoking crack again....

Q42011GDP was reported as 2.8 (1st of 3 revisions, and it will be revised DOWN)
Subtract the 1.9 for inventory growth...
Subtract the 0.3 for auto
Subtract the 0.1 for net imports/exports

REAL Q42011GDP was 0.5

Q12012GDP is gonna tank as result of:
  • Consumer spending for Q42011 falling
  • all this excess inventory
The only corner turned was a cliff.

Greece is a "canary"... the coal mine is Italy, Spain... which on a GDP basis is a much bigger part of Euro GDP...

So far most of the sovereign debt of the EU countries in trouble has only been extended. as the creditors have taken some haircuts... but along the way they have to:

  1. find ongoing buyers for that debt so they can,
  2. de-lever the debt (write it down)

BUT... the debt is so LARGE that the only hope ANY of the PIIGSFUK (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France and the UK) have is to "extend, pretend and pray" that the EU economy miraculously returns to growth.. except they've already reached the point of no return. Their only choice is to play this game of musical bailout chairs, extending the drama... and peace... until the people get pissed and the Greek riots, become EU riots.
  • The math is done.
  • Greece is going to default.
And the counter-party risk when all those CDS markers are called in will impact US banking, and we'll be just as fucked.. that's why the FED has been quietly pumping hundreds of billions into the EU.. because they know time is not on our side, and propping up the EU buys the FED time.

Regarding Obama...

Obama gave a speech where he called D.C.'s problems a "crisis in confidence"... except the CAUSE is a crisis of morality... Obama also said he'd repeal the Patriot act and end the lobby too... two "changes" any real liberal with a brain should be screaming for... funny how now that those interests benefit Obama they STILL exist..

He won't call it a crisis of morality because as a member of Congress, he was part of the problem, still is, and he knows it. You would too if you weren't so caught up in the "party vs. party" ass-fucking. But that's how both parties win... by dividing and conquering. And you follow along like a Loon after Perry..

Nothing changes until the morality changes... and THAT only happens when the People wise up and vote in a majority of public servants with integrity, which is impossible for any person who runs as a Dem and Rep.. since the parties control who runs for them in their districts, and any potential candidate must tow the party line, and sing the party philosophy to get in the game.

Diluting the pool of Dems and Reps in power ============> dilutes their power (novel concept, eh?)

It makes the change in morality a possibility. but expecting the Dems or Reps to suddenly "get morality" on their own... is the very definition of Einsteins theory of Insanity, which could be modified to read as follows:

“Insanity is electing Democrats or Republicans over and over again expecting different result.”

~Einstein's Theory Of Political Insanity

The only choice is people voting in candidates not beholden to either party (and their corporate masters), which is also why someone like Ron Paul, the only candidate I've heard who actually understands economics and the Constitution has no chance... because he doesn't represent what the current RINO-Republican party does. As long as:
  1. the Republican Party controls 50% of the 2 party system
  2. the Republican party does not embrace Paul's definition of "conservative". (if they did it would mean cutting their own political throats, as Paul would gut the party leadership and replace it with more Libertarian thinking folks)
Dr. Paul has no chance.

Look at the top contributors to Obamas campaing in 2008: http://www.opensecrets.org/pres08/contr ... =N00009638
  • Goldman Sachs
  • JP Morgan
  • CitiGroup
  • UBS
  • Morgan Stanley

Now look at 2012 for Romney:
  • Goldman Sachs
  • Credit Suisse Groups
  • Morgan Stanleys
  • HIG Capital
  • Barclays Bank
  • Bank of America
  • JPMorgan Chase & Co
  • UBS
  • Wells Fargo
  • Citigroup Inc

Neither Obama or Romney represents you or I.

They represent BANKS. They are ALL beholden to interests OTHER than US... and simply changing the occupant of the WH will do nothing until the rampant immorality is also changed... look how well that's done for us in the last 50 years... the systemic problems this country faces are not the doing of the WH or its occupant... but of the sycophants in CONGRESS who write, raise and vote FOR the bills the president signs... Change the morality of CONGRESS and the WH will follow suit... but INSTEAD people (sheeple) are led to believe that changing (lol) the POTUS will fix it...

Until the morality changes - it will be "business as usual"... regardless of the party in power in the WH or the Congress.

But you keep on smoking that crack...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
