Def Leppard Charlotte show 7/15 review

Postby DerriD » Sun Jul 16, 2006 3:19 pm

I just wanna say that I was a bit hesitant about Def Lep going into tonights show. The last two time I heard them perform live (Video Game Channel Awards and Hard Rock Tribute night on VH1), they sounded awful. More precisely, Joe's vocals sounded awful. I am pleased to tell you that Joe sounded great tonight. Not his best ever, but good damn enough.

As for the show, they only played two songs off of 'Yeah!'...Rock On and No Matter What. Those two were back to back.

Good news...they played Foolin'.

So the Lep's have seemed to have listened to the fans once again.

Great show!

They really have trimmed down the Yeah! songs...I enjoy the CD ok even though I do not like the "idea", but I applauded them for supporting it heavily on tour.

Well that's just f*****g wonderful. Another damn greatest hit set just like I've seen on every tour since 1996. I was really looking forward to hearing some new material tonight in Nashville. These guys are scared of their own shadows or something. I guess they didn't get the crowd response they wanted or some b.s. like that and now all the new stuff is gone except for that p.o.s Rock On. Dammit Joe! You're a moron! You care more about pleasing some drunk guy that only remembers Pour Some Sugar On Me and hasn't bought a new Def Leppard album in 15 years more than you do me--a loyal fan. I'm getting pretty damn tired of it too. I wanted to at least hear 20th Century Boy and Hell Raiser. I bet they left that Make Love Like A Man crapfest in the set though.

If it wasn't for getting to check out Jeff Scott Soto with Journey I would just resell my tickets in the parking lot and go home. I guess if you want to hear new Def Leppard tunes on tour, you better see one of the first 3 or 4 shows before the guys wimp out and drop them from the setlist.

Hey Rick, just take that damn YEAH drumhead off your bass drum because that's obviously not the tour you're supporting anymore! Just go ahead and reuse the one from the Rock of Ages tour. It's more fitting. As a matter of fact, they played Rock On and No Matter What on that tour too.

I paid a lot of money for these two tickets and I was under the impression they would be playing about 4 new songs. Never again Joe. Never again.

Milos (from another Denverite) you gotta know that this is just the way it goes. I hate Rock On as well and would have liked some other songs. But as you so eloquently put it, the bands care more about those fans that have not followed their recent stuff. It is simple economics: there are more of them.

First, the band knows the hardcore fans are going to see them regardless of their setlist so there's no real point in catering to them. The casual fan is much more important to impress. The hardcore fans, however, are catered to when the band release boxsets, DVDs, and so on, which aren't meant for the casual types. It's just two different markets.

Second, if the band had a good record, then they should/would support it. I know the last two Maiden tours they have played 6 or 7 songs off each of their new records during their tour, for the entire tour. The new album they'll be playing all of it live (according to Bruce). So my point is that, if the band is really behind what they are creating, then promoting it on tour is the way to go. Fans will get into them, even the casual fans, if the songs are good and the energy and enthusiasm of the band warrants it.

Excellent points on the previous post.....and I happen to think that there are some great tracks on Yeah! that they should be showcasing. Actually I'm surprised they're not playing American Girl off the bonus cd....would get a great crowd response.

I would have kept 20th Century Boy in there and add Don't Believe a Word....a short rock tune that definitely would go over well like Rock On and No Matter What. They could definitely cut Make Love Like a Man from the setlist and Let's Get Rocked...not too many people would miss those songs. I know they're fun songs but have been overplayed to death!

However I do like the fact they put Bringing on the Heartbreak and Fooling back in the setlist. Keep Let it Go.
