Two nights... must be because the first is already sold out. Likely sold more tickets in those two nights than DFB did on their entire Canadian tour.

I wonder if when DFB goes back to Canada if they'll be forced to play Suite Madame Blue the way the Japan promoters forced them to play Babe. I mean - when your meal ticket demands you play the hits, I guess all your politics goes out the window eh Chicago? Either play what people want or don't come. Sounds like the Canadians and Japanese have it right.

Spare me from the horror of that. There are some Styx songs the Current Styx should simply stay away from. That is one of them. JMO.

Nope, not yet. I just bought my ticket for March 23rd this morning. I'm in the second row from the stage on Dziallo's side.

But don't worry - they'll sell out.

They will in Montreal too, when (not if) those concert announcements come out.

They aren't forced to do Suite Madame Blue.. Every Canadian show sans one that I've been to they've always played it..

They've also played 2+ hours as well except for one show (Festival in Saskatchewan in 2000)..

And as for Styx's Canadian tour, they haven't really had one in 5 or so years, they;ve done a few dates here and there, but that's about it.

Pretty much Styx's only Canadian date for the last few years has been Rama.. I guess that's the only Canadian promoter that they haven't pissed off yet! lol

I know I missed something because this is the second time I heard it. What happened with Styx and the Canadian promoter? I heard something about illness in the band or some such? And they had to cancel some shows? Can someone explain. I heard it was just kinda of an unfortunate thing.

Ash,

When Styx originally split with Dennis, Dennis "spoke" to a few promoters in Montreal and basically they've refused to book them at any larger venues in Montreal.

The big thing was the whole SARS scare in 2003.. When Styx cancelled their two promo shows in Montreal and Toronto during the Cyclorama tour but decided to play "paying" gigs in Buffalo, Detroit etc that didn't sit well with their remaining supporters in Montreal and Toronto.

Both Q-107 and CHOM FM (Toronto's and Montreal's largest rock stations) lost 10's of thousands on those gigs and well, they are quite influential

You'll notice that they haven't played in Montreal or Toronto since.. but Dennis has no problems.. coincidence? nope..

I also believe their Canadian promoter was out of Toronto who booked their tours (I belive he helped Gowan book his tours as well) and well I don't believe has had anything to do with them since 2001.

Tommy's realized their mistake, but unfortunately the damage has been done, so anyone in the Toronto area has to travel the 90 minutes to RAMA to catch them.

Plus, Dennis's management knows that Canada is a hotbed for him right now.. Styx's management couldn't find Canada on the map even if you pointed it out to them. They don't consider Canada a worthwhile market, I'll be surprised if there ever is another Canadian tour.

I guess their loss is Dennis's gain.. all the way to the bank.

What's really weird is that Gowan's solo DVD is selling well in Canada and I'm sure it will outsell the CYO DVD up here..

But then again, I believe Arch Allies DVD may have gone gold up here, but I can't confirm that as of yet.

Hope this helps..

I wonder if JY feels the same. He must otherwise they likely would have found other management. I can't believe they'd write off an entire market like that - especially after what Canada has meant to the band over their history. Hell they were a hit in Canada before they were in the US. Another poor business decision.

I've often wondered what would happen if Dennis played some dates in Japan with the right promotion. Personally, I think it'd be huge.

If you'll notice, DDY has been very methodical overall. He hasn't oversaturated a market, and he's not expanding into new markets without a plan. Maybe he'll get to Europe and Japan, maybe he won't. Heck, he didn't do Canada for awhile until the show in the USA was doing well. That's a smart business plan.

I didn't know that Styx pissed off the promoters in Canada, but now I know why they've only been doing Casino Rama - always wondered about that. That's what happens when promoters and radio stations have long memories. Styx may be doing more dates outside of North America (obviously the only int'l dates DDY has done are Mexico City and in Canada to date), but I think their success has been mediocre overall. I saw folks complaining about the last UK tour and the ticket prices when it was just them, and now they're opening for Deep Purple. Granted, it's good exposure for them and it's in larger arenas, but I'm not sure what it'll translate into especially since they'll have maybe an hour to play and you'll get no rarities (not like they play any now). They haven't been back to the Far East since, what 2001? House band, planet Earth indeed.

Oh yeah, I remember that now .... I remember the cancellation on CHOM too. It was too bad, because I would have gone to that concert and still would if they came up here. The "official" story was the SARS scare. Yeah, right. TS knows where Canada is, he's been here!!!

I'm pretty sure that Dennis doesn't care to travel, I think I actually have that in an interview. If memory serves me, he has had MANY offers from overseas just in the past few years, including Japan. I'll see if I can get all that confirmed and from where.

Interesting...and not even a single mention of Styx! I guess JY's lawyers really did a good job on making DDY an 'unperson.'

One would think JY would do anything to play in any market, even Iraq. He has plastic surgery and medical bills to pay for!

I know they try not to oversaturate the market. He's very vocal on how the current band is doing this and he never wanted to do that when he was with Styx. They had to turn down quite a few shows because he didn't want to overlap or play in the same area close to another date. All those Canada dates were a surprise to him. When the first Montreal show sold out within 45 minutes I think they almost all fell over - LOL Then they added another date, again 45 minutes sold out and so on and so on. He's still "hot" in Canada and I can see more tv offers coming in. I think 2007 will be Dennis' year!! :D

Well the one thing that Dennis did was create a demand for his product.. He didn't play Montreal or Quebec for years after he started touring again.

Don't forget, Styx fans in Montreal waited for nearly 10 years for Dennis to return, so of course there was a demand. To go along with his Orchestral CD.

Ottawa is on the Quebec border, so of course he'll get a lot of crossover fans from Quebec for that show as well.

Again a very smart way of planning.

While I'm not knocking Rama (Styx does sell it out every year, at 5000 people a night) they know there's more to Canada then that, they are choosing not to tour up here for whatever reasons.

Whoever says Radio stations have long memories, you're right. I do recall JY saying "we've got something special" planned to make it up to the fans of those shows we had to cancel.. Well JY, we're still waiting!

Honestly though, I was pro-Styx for many years.. why? Well Dennis wasn't doing anything other then his Orchestral shows and it seemed like he wasn't interested in rocking..

But after I travelled to see Styx in 2003 at Rama (my last "styx" shows btw) I started hearing the "it's the same show over and over again" "they are going through the motions" etc.. At least in 2003 Styx had new material to do and hearing "These Are The Times" live was bloody brilliant.

But since then I just haven't really had the same need to see them live again. Then with JY opening his mouth to slam Dennis every chance he gets, really distanced myself from the lineup even further.

The kicker though? Seeing Dennis live.. hearing that voice, seeing that everything JY spouted was pretty much BS.

I guess I'm still on the fence, but leaning more to Dennis and Glen's side as time goes by. Talking to Tim Orchard really did open my eyes to a few things.

Someone said Dennis doesn't go out to seek where Styx has gone, etc.. now on occasion they may play the same venue, but at different times. Lately though, Styx has been playing venues within 1 hour of where Dennis has been playing within a week of each other.. Coincidence? Maybe.. but Dennis's gigs were booked first and then a couple months later guess which dates appear on the Styx page?

Look at the Wilkes Barre and Philly DDY gigs.. and less then a week later Styx is playing at Jim Thorpe..

Will it ever end? Doubtful..

If you put both camps past shows in the last 2 years back to back you might be able to see a little pattern. I notice when his shows are listed on his site too, just a hunch!!

1) Same here, and for me I liked both sides, but Styx had an advantage, they were touring (near me every year), putting a new CD every 2 or 3 years, a new live CD or hits every 6 months :D . So I was more into Styx, they were in the forefront. Still liked DDY, but nothing new was going on with him and had yet to see him live.

2) Now DDY is before Styx, still like Styx...but the change is for two reasons.
1) go to FINALLY see Dennis Live. I was BLOWN away. one of my top 3 shows by anyone. Nothing against Larry singing DDY songs in STYX, he does an ok to fairly descent job on most, and Larry's songs have been good. But hearing the master (DDY) sing his songs, unbelievable. I had forgotten how good he was, shame on me!!!!
2) another reason is JY, the more he talks the more I move away from the Styx camp. It is to the point I wish he was out of the group. Put Glen back in when he is not with DDY, get some one new or put a sock in JY's mouth. Tommy is a gifted writer, singer, player, and that is what made his playing with DDY so good, they played off each other. JY don't play with anyone put himself. That didn't sound right, but you know what I mean.

So I am still a DDY fan and STYX always will be, cause when you think of one, you can't help but think of the other.

I know in the grand scheme of things, it is a small number, but there certainly are a lot of die-hard fans of Styx past and present lineups, who are really, really turned off by JY.

What I wonder is....does he really know this is going on? Does it bother him at all? I would think the latter question SHOULD bother him, but I may be wrong about someone who is so blinded by his own light.

As to Dennis. He was not very gung-ho about getting a solo career underway. He had a lot of help, which he freely admits, from those around him who encouraged him to do so, particularly Tim Orchard.

His talent is so incredible, it has been hard to ignore him and he is now getting a lot of much-desreved attention from all sorts of people who count in the entertainment industry.

Every step he, and his management, have taken so far has been very sure-footed and very smartly planned.

I think that there is something to be said for comfort zones. Many core fans of the lineup truly enjoy what they have to offer...and they should. I would not dismiss their talent. Many others are basically tiring of what is being offered. I liken it to watching a long running tv series...eventually you tire of it.

It isn't for me to decide who one should go see/follow as it's all about what you enjoy. For many who frequent boards like this, it is hard to separate your feelings about events in the band with what is being presented on that stage...be it the band or Dennis.

I lean towards Dennis (I know, pretty obvious), but I certainly respect those who don't.

Okay, the cat's out of the bag this morning at Montreal radio station CHOM at 6:50 a.m.

If I heard correctly (I will keep listening to confirm this), the DDY concert is on March 30th with Symphony in Montreal. Apparently CHOM will have tickets to win to the concert AND tickets to win to come to the radio station on the 15th with Dennis!

Tickets to the concert will go on sale at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 15th.
