Women who play Guitars in rock.

Postby Jonny B » Sat May 29, 2004 11:33 am

When looking for women who can play a guitar in the hard rock genre, most will point to Lita Ford or to Joan Jett. The question is, why haven't more women shown up in the rock scene with a guitar? There have been a select few, including Jen Kuehnemeud (Vixen), Gina Stile (Poison Dollys), Nicole Couch (my personal fav, from Phantom Blue) and Janet Robin (Precious Metal.) Also included in this group is The Great Kat (probably the best of the shredders, but her voice is easily forgetable.)

Are there others that need recognition? I'm a bit tired, so I'm sure I missed a few.

Nancy Wilson plays guitar, and Goldie and the Gingerbreads were an all female band back in the 60's who played their own instruments.

A few more I can think of real quick would be Miki Igarashi of Show-Ya, Tina Listo of No Shame, Maxine Petrucci of Madame X, several different women (can't remember them all) who played guitar in Girlschool, and Jennifer Batten. She can really shred on the guitar. You have to hear her play Flight of the Bumblebee at warp speed on guitar.

Another one that came to mind overnight was Danielle Kern, who has done guitar work for Lana Lane.

I would hardly call Sheryl Crow a rock guitarist. I f***in' HATE her voice as well.

I often wonder if it has to do with the guitar being an extension of the male anatomy...

Shannon Curfman is a great blues-rock guitarist!

She's just as rock, in fact, very much more so then Bonnie Raitt and Melissa Ethridge!

And I don't believe anyone asked your opinion on her voice, the thread title says guitars...and whether you like her or not, she DOES play one.

Marion Raven (girl in my avatar picture) plays a damn good guitar, Not a hard rocker, but she rocks hard enough to have attracted Nikki Sixx's attention

Since when do I have to receive permission to give an off-topic opinion? I started this topic!

And the topic is Guitars in rock! Sheryl Crow is NOT a rock guitarist. She is a pop puppet of the American music industry, and she writes utter $chit!

Would've been nice if someone gave props to Lori Linstruth. Even she rocks harder then a lot of women who impersonate as guitar rockers.

She was in Stream of Passion right? Good thing they played Ayreon stuff live to let her show her talent. The SoP stuff was pretty weak.

Another one I didn't see mentioned and I don't know her name is the guitarist for Drain STH.

And I suppoe you could mention the guitarists of The Iron Maidens even though they don't do anything original

Forgive me, I didn't realize you had to power to tell her what kind of music she plays. maybe you should listen to ALL her music, instead of flapping your gums over her half dozen pop songs. She's just as much rock as Bonnie or Melissa
