Seriously - is this a breakdown with a tragic ending in the not too distant future?

Also, is he THAT good of an actor? I never watched Walk the Line - but enjoyed his work in Gladiator.

I saw it last night, except I missed the very beginning of his appearance. At first, I thought it was real, but I beginning to think it's a hoax. Letterman was fantastic as always. But whatever Joaquin Phoenix is up to, even if it's an act, he's really damaging his reputation to be taken seriously as an actor.

I think Joaquin's going through a depressed state (helped by alcohol or drugs?). Withdraws from acting and trying to find satisfaction somewhere else. Its obvious he didn't want to be there, just contractual obligations.

Up to now, I thought this whole "hip hop" thing was a hoax but when he turned on Paul Schaffer and said, "Are you f*cking serious with that maniacal laugh", I wasn't so sure.

If it was an act, I'd expect more over the top reactions to some DL's jabs, "your days with the unabomber" "high praise coming from you", etc. He just sat there and sulked.

When Letterman commented on the gum he takes it out and sticks it to the desk. Only act of defiance and then at the end seems apologetic to DL.

Not saying its not a hoax, after all its all show biz but possible its not.

Nope, especially the godawful thing he did in vegas. Having his bro-in-law following him around filming this meltdown is suspect as well.

Ok, I'm back on the hoax wagon.

If Letterman's not in on it though, way to kill an acting career.

Now, watch the last few seconds of the video. Phoenix stands up, takes off his sunglasses, shakes the hand of his erstwhile sparring partner. Says Letterman, "Good job."

"Good job"? Hmmm ...

Maybe Phoenix is not himself lately, mentally speaking, and maybe he's trying out a new role as the Andy Kaufman of our time (I mean, the hip-hop can't be serious), with a winking Letterman playing along. Either way, Letterman's probably right that Phoenix won't be rapping on his show

I watched it and came away thinking it was one of the more bizarre interviews I've ever seen. I also don't think it was much of a joke. I've been watching Letterman for 25 years, and you could just tell that he was VERY annoyed with this jackass. That's when he started dropping unabomber references and lines like "Thank you for not visiting this evening". I don't know if Joaquin is following in his brother's footsteps and hitting the bong or if he's just a few sandwiches short of a picnic. Something just doesn't seem right with that dude. As soon as he came walking out, I thought things were strange. Dude looked like he put together a cheesy disguise to rob a bank.

2nd vid down at this site

http://www.poptv.com/

JP and CA walking into and out of the show.

Also read a post from an audience member which said on commercial breaks, JP & DL were joking around so most likely some elaborate publicity stunt.

similar to this...?
