I have Winds of Freedom if anyone still wants/needs it. Let me know.
Not a big JSS-Journey fan (but I like some of JSS's other stuff, esp. WET and his work w/ Yngwie), but that song wasn't THAT terrible. It had some decent guitar and what not from what I remember. It was about Red 13 caliber... maybe a little below.

I know that, the point is everyone can't have it both ways!!
The man was toast, he was not happy w/the way he sounded, he was miserable ...you have many people here agreeing w/this, yet
they continue to crucify him for halting the show ...I want to know what people EXPECTED him to do?!?!
BTW, I saw ROR 3 times ...loved every second of every show!! Throw Detroit or Dallas or SHreveport on that thar DVD!!

I'm NOT complaining about tuning down. Are you kidding? Had they done that, Perry might be around today.
My comment was in reference to everyone jumping on Arnel because the band tuned down. They finally learned
their lesson with singers. Too bad didn't learn while Perry was in the band. I was saying the same thing when Augeri was in the band.
As for cancelling the tour, yeah, I did say that.

Didn't Deen Sing IBAWY in Hawaii last year?
Nobody can sing it like JSS still can.
Oh, please! I've heard JSS sing it and was not impressed.
Dude, JSS wipes the floor with Pineda on this song. No contest.
I don't think I've heard Pineda do that one. By the way, the reason that JSS did a decent job on it, is because it's one of Journey's lower songs.
I always thought JSS had a very "black" sounding voice (which is cool), just not a hugely high range. Still, for what he does, it's good stuff.

I have a GH LIve CD with Jeff's vocals dubbed onto it. He sounds phenomenal. I think most here underestimate his upper register.

Maybe you shouldn't let it get you so emotional. Journey get's plenty of criticism around these parts. This isn't Journeyland.
Perry made more than 1 mistake, and it's completely fair to call him out on it.

UH no. it is what it is, and its why hes not fronting the band anymore, yes hes sounds awesome, he has a great
voice, I would have loved to hear what they could have done with him, his upper range is very good, but not good enough.

Arnel hasn't sang it that I know of. It was SA and yes, JSS version was better than his.

Same here. He sounds very good studio, but I have yet to hear ONE bootleg of his time with Journey where he wasn't straining quite a bit on the pre-Frontiers material. He nailed the ROR stuff, and did a great job on any later songs (TBF, Augeri)...but he always sounded very strained on the higher-pitched Perry material. Maybe he wasn't physically straining and his voice just got very thin, but it didn't sound good.
Not a knock on him as a singer (he's a very good one)....but early Perry in its original key is not his forte--and any singer that Journey hires will be judged primarily on their ability to sing that stuff. It's not the only criteria, but it's a major one.

Absolutely, but make sense while doing so.
Calling the man out for pulling out in the middle of a tour and calling him out for sounding like shit during said tour makes absolutely
no sense to me, and I said as much. Did they want to hear him sing at any cost or not?!? ... ...perhaps I'm lacking in communication skills ...

If there were a place out there called "Journeyland" It would surely be full of ass kissing to the highest degree, some call it "Journeymusic.com". You don't see that type of behavior here. I was disagreeing with your statement that "anything this band does is ok, as long as perry isn't the one doing it" which is flat out wrong. This band gets more criticism on this website than Perry does by a long shot, especially considering the fact that they are on their 3rd replacement singer. Which is fine by me, I am not complaining about that, only pointing out a flaw in your statement.
Everyone knows Perry is great, but he's still only human and calling out Perry for his mistakes seems justifiable to me as his decisions ultimately effect the band as a whole and look where his decisions took them. Some might argue that it was Journeys decision that ultimately "cracked the stone" but it was Perry that put them in that situation in the first place.

Gregg Rolie, Robert Fleischman, Steve Perry, Steve Augeri, Jeff Scott Soto and Arnel Pineda makes six.
You probably forgot about those other guys.

Well, to be honest, I never really considered Perry a replacement to Rolie, but I'll accept Fleishman.

This statement is only incorrect if you are wrapping all Journey fans into one pretty little pkg. It is true if you are referring to Pinheads, primarily!!
And not all Pinheads, either ...I break the Pinhead fanship up into 4 categories ...
#1. You've got your Pinheads who were familiar w/Journey, but became Journey fans when Arnel jumped on board ...these Pinheads
were familiar w/Open Arms, Don't Stop Believin', the DD and Oh Sherrie, but knew virtually nothing else ...I consider
them new fans and more power to Journey for acquiring them. They are happy hearing the DD, Perry era
music, and could really care less if the band put out anything new .
#2 You've got your Pinheads who became fans when Arnel jumped on board and they knew nothing about Journey, probably
never heard a Journey song. These Pinheads thought Arnel originated the DD and every song the band sings.
Once they discovered Perry is/was the VOICE of Journey, loved by millions, originated and co/wrote all of those songs sung
by their hero, they became defensive of their HERO!!
#3 You've got your Pinheads who have been fans of Journey since day one. They support Journey, in general, they don't care
about all the behind the scenes band business, they just want to enjoy the music peacefully. These are the BEST kind of Pinheads .
#4 You've got your Pinheads who have been fans of the band since day one and they have never stopped blaming Perry for
the breakup of that era of the band, every decision he made while in the band and the fact that he had the kind of control
he had while in said band .
My statement above refers to Pinheads #4...again, must be a communication malfunction .
Damn, I'm having a hard time not using the little exclamation pointy thingys when typing to you!!

This is a beautiful statement and so eloquently stated ...I'm going to have a tough time deciding
whether I'm going to think with my head or my heart here!!

That's understandable. I don't know how/why these "fans" become so delusional. Being a young guy (21), I haven't been a Journey fan for long, maybe a couple of years back when JSS was on board, but I've done my history work and collected everything I wanted to collect as far as Journey went. I admit I wasn't really a fan of JSS, so I spent my time just listening to Perry stuff and watching Perry boots. I was a fan of Arnel long before Journey ever heard of him. I originally found him on youtube doing Led Zeppelin stuff and Cheap Trick and I thought they sounded great and wanted to show my friend who is a HUGE Led Zeppelin fan, but then I found Arnel doing "Faithfully" and thought it was amazing. I thought to myself "this guy would be awesome with the actual band" because I thought the Zoo band sucked. I then watched as Journey discovered him and it was quite amazing to me. I knew this wasn't some "stunt" or you know, really some celebrity they picked up and fabricated this story because I knew of Arnel before hand. I couldn't wait to see how it all unfolded.
Nobody will ever give me shit for being a new fan because I respect the legacy and have done my homework. It's not about liking Arnel or Steve or Augeri or JSS the BEST, it's just about having respect and you are full of shit if you deny Steve Perry his respect. Learn something Pinheads.
I bought Revelation as soon as it came out, and I admit, I was a little underwhelmed. I think it had more to do with the song writing for disc 1, I just wasn't "blown away" but I thought it was ....okay. Disc 2 was...really horrible. I listened to it once and that was it. First thing I noticed was the shitty production. I compose music myself. (all types of music, mostly Orchestral and symphonic Metal) and I also do my own mastering/mixing and I couldn't believe how bad this production sounded from such an established band. Even though I wasn't really impressed, I thought Arnel sounded much better live than on the CD, so I continued to support them. These days, I don't really care, but I still think Arnel is a cool person and wish them the best.
I can see where your frustration comes from, I agree the "Pinheads" are pathetic and can make it embarrassing to be an Arnel fan (or Journey fan) because they only jump on board when Journey grabbed him to support their "idol" oh yeah? where the fuck were all of you pinheads when your "idol" was singing in the bars? I was a fan of him then atleast, where were all of you nuthuggers? I think these people are only a fan of pride....
These days, I don't really care. I still think Arnel is a cool person and wish them the best, but if their new CD sucks, it won't make or break anything for me. I'll always have the classic music, and move on with other bands.

I know you're a loon, but I also think there are many different types of loons. I am a Perry loon, but only when it comes to his singing. Nobody will ever touch his singing, but him as a person? yeah he's human. You're free to do what you want!

Nice ^^^^Lidzig ...interesting stuff up there!!
I think you made a great connection w/the pride thing. It would be interesting
to find out how many of these people would continue their fanship w/out Arnel, but we may
never know ...I think Arnel will be in for the remainder of Journey's active days.
In all fairness, though, we could break the Loons, Wigglers & Soto~pops down into three or four categories as
well. There are some crazy~ass fans for all era's of the band and the pride runs deep
for each one of them... and there are good and bad in all of them.

Yeah, He'll be there to the end of Journey's career as they go out much like the sad, bloated Muhammad Ali in 1978.
They couldn't be happy going out like Barry Sanders.

Perry wrote a song on his FTLOSM about Schon and Cain, called Anyway.
Highest Ground off Soul Sirkus was written for Augeri, and it wasn't too kind either.
Actually, Deano, I always thought WCTNGOF as his departure song. Every time I hear that song, I get misty eyed wondering if SP sang it as his last song on his last Journey album.
We all know TBF was an anomaly...was not supposed to happen. SP said himself in the GQ interview, that he meant to end his Journey after ROR.

I thought Jon already explained that WCTNGOF was sort of an ode to the fans, gaining fruition from Cain standing in a parking lot after the last show of the Frontiers tour, wondering what was going to become of the band and when they would see the fans again, almost wishing that it wasn't the last show as there was a lot of uncertainty at that moment in which direction the band would be going next.

I think you're right about Jon's re-collection, GB. I'm just saying from my perspective, looking at what happened in hindsight, and listening to how SP sang this song, just tears me up inside--every time .
